Lying at the forefront of Raffles Place, Singapore's financial and business district, it enjoys close proximity to the cultural centres of Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, The Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, as well as art museums in the vicinity.
In 1958 ,a lighthouse was added to the top floor of the building to replace the Fort Canning Lighthouse. This beacon guided ships to Singapore Harbour for over 20 years before being replaced by the Bedok Lighthouse. Now ,it holds a restaurant.
In 1998 ,the General Post Office was relocated ,and this building closed down for renonvations and conversion into a hotel. In 2002 ,the Fullerton Hotel officially opened in the Former GPO.
