The Fullerton Building was built in 1928 ,then the most expensive and the biggest building in Singapore. It held the prestigious Singapore Club and the General Post Office ,which the building is also known as.

The historic significance and unique architecture make the building eminently suited for a grand hotel. Designed by the Shanghai-based firm of Keys & Dowdeswell, this historic landmark enjoys a strategic location at the mouth of the bustling Singapore River, making it the focal point of commercial activities during its heyday. The Fullerton Singapore's prime location in the heart of the Civic District, is in tandem with its rich history. Lying at the forefront of Raffles Place, Singapore's financial and business district, it enjoys close proximity to the cultural centres of Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, The Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, as well as art museums in the vicinity.

In 1958 ,a lighthouse was added to the top floor of the building to replace the Fort Canning Lighthouse. This beacon guided ships to Singapore Harbour for over 20 years before being replaced by the Bedok Lighthouse. Now ,it holds a restaurant.

In 1998 ,the General Post Office was relocated ,and this building closed down for renonvations and conversion into a hotel. In 2002 ,the Fullerton Hotel officially opened in the Former GPO.

The new main entrance is now beside the historic Cavenagh Bridge.

Suites

Palladian Suites are The Fullerton’s one-bedroom suites offering spectacular views of the riverside and harbour. In particular, Palladian Suite 777 embodies special significance as it was once the office of the late Minister of Finance Dr. Hon Sui Sen.

Loft Suites are The Fullerton's distinctive 2-storey duplex suites that feature splendid high ceilings. From the living room on the lower floor, a spiral stair leads to the bedroom above, ensuring that the bedroom remains your private domain while business discussions or friendly get-togethers take place in the living room. Ideal for both business and leisure travellers.

Eight Loft Suites line the building, each featuring original double storey French doors leading out to a balcony with a view of the waterfront.

Fullerton Suites are located at the top level of the hotel with large outdoor terraces overlooking the riverside and harbour. Offering picturesque views, the terraces are ideal for private gatherings.

The Governor Suite is The Fullerton's Grand Suite. The living room opens out to a magnificent verandah flanked by 20-foot Doric columns on each side, and offers stunning views of Anderson Bridge and Esplanade Park. These magnificent columns are found only on two other historic buildings in Singapore – City Hall and Supreme Court. Design elements of interest in this suite include wall motifs that date back to the 1920s. The Governor’s Suite also features a Bang and Olufsen sound system and television.

The Far East Suite, formerly the card room of the elite Singapore Town Club, is now The Fullerton's Presidential Suite. At 199 square metres, this spacious suite is furnished with a baby grand piano and has a private elevator for discreet access to the suite.

The living and dining room extends out to a spectacular glass enclosed verandah, graced by 20-foot Doric columns, overlooking the scenic Clifford Pier and Marina Bay – an ideal location for Far East Suite guests who wish to host a private dinner

Not many Asian cities boast of such majestic colonial architecture. Then again, this was the HQ of the British Post of all Malaya:)

Well......at least while so many ex-colonys take great pains in removing all traces of their colonial past, Singapore is one of the few exceptions which not only keep the street names, maintain the heritage, as well as celebrating the architectural works of our former "European masters," as has happened for this building!

It may be very common in Europe, but not many of buildings like this still exist in Asia.

You can see Cavenagh Bridge (1869) in this pic. The steel components of the bridge were prefabricated in Glasgow.
