This will be a fun thread

Please post pics of McDonalds restaurants in your city or country.

Feel free to post and discuss stores that are unique in anyway including those located in strange locations or architectural styles that the outlet is located in ie of historical significance

Here are a couple from Sydney I would like to share

Th next one worth sharing, is that of an outlet in an arcade leading to Sydney's Wynyard Railway Station. As the arcade slopes down to the station, the restaurant steps down from street level. The dining areas are located higher than the kitchen and serving counter as you can see in this shot. As you can see in this pic, the counter should should be roughly at stomach level, but customers need to bend down a bit to grab their meal

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid88/pb08646a5d259ba5e94b277734a405387/fa92df33.jpg

This outlet in the city centre is located in a century old sandstone building. Inside, the interiors try to keep to a historical theme

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid88/p96ef76a3ada7394560bf94b09581e1fc/fa92e544.jpg

This outlet is located within The Paragon Hotel at Circular Quay, at the harbour end of the city centre. The hotel dates back to the 1860's and the facade reflects that of the Victorian style, common during that period. Once you have had your Big Mac and Fries, you can pop into the bar next door (not associated with McDonalds) and drown it all down with a beer

This doesn't have anything to do with Mickey D's, but I just found it interesting when I went to Australia that your Burger King's were called Hungry Jack's, but everything inside was identical. What's that about?

I try to get away from junk food but I only discovered this photo yesterday and I couldn't resist posting it:

McDonalds, Clifton Hill, Melbourne, Australia. The former "United Kingdom" Hotel. I think a Big Mac is almost obligatory here.

Photo taken from "Art Deco Architecture in Australia, A Spirit of Progress", Van Daele & Lumby, published by G&B Arts International, Craftsman House, ISBN 90 5703 67 11 . Go out & buy it! An excellent portfolio of Australian Art Deco.

I've had this same difference pointed out to me years ago ... nobody knows ... except perhaps that Australians would rather deal with "Hungry Jack" than "Burger King". I mean, we're not exactly monarchists here, are we? :)

The name "Burger King" was already registered by another business in Western Australia when they went to open their first Australian store in that state thirty years ago. Therefore another name had to be chosen.

A few years back Burger King stores began sprouting up in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne alongside existing Hungry Jacks stores despite almost having identical menus (there were slight differences in menus ie Big King available at Burger King only). A year ago, it was decided that all Burger King Stores would be rebranded Hungry Jacks and all stores have since been rebranded.

Yes, this was the case when Hungry Jacks began opperating, however HJs is a licenced subsiduary of Burger King (It's not the same company). When Burger King began opening in Australia (a few years back) that was the parent company moving into Australia. A long legal battle was fought and the outcome was that Burger King didn't have a choice but to have all of the stores rebranded to HJ's and HJ's Australia bought them out. I think in Airports though you may still be able to find stores labelled Burger King.

One store in Sydney's Inner West is still a Burger King. I see this on the train as I head through the area.

McDonalds is based just outside of Chicago, and has had a sorta "flagship" store known as the "Rock and Roll McDonalds" in the River North neighborhood just north of the Loop since 1983. They have announced this past week that they are going to tear it down and build a new flagship location to be open by next April. See pics below:

In general, there is nothing special about the McD's around here. There is one located in a post Chicago fire building from 1872 at the corner of Randolph and Dearborn, about a block from my home. (I tried to get a pic, but wasn't able to get the link to work.)

Current "Rock and Roll" location:

in singapore you can pay in mcdonald's using a contactless card mainly used for public transport. for students it's an identity card too and can be used for borrowing stuff from public libraries :)

Sedona, Arizona -- the worlds only non-golden arches. It was the only way that city hall agreed to have a McD's put in their small, but proud town is if they changed the color to match the southwest motif.

DrJoe posted my local McDs!

http://www.mcdonalds.ca/images/aboutus_mcdsCanada.jpg

Apparently this one (Wonderland Rd and Oxford St. in London) is one of the first locations in Canada, and is the only McDonald's that I have been to that has its own uniforms (celebrating the 40th (?) anniversary of that location or something, im not sure about the age) and has a unique sign (notice the bubble text). The two arches at either end of the building form an "m" as you sit at the traffic light facing south on Wonderland (roughly).

This location is also one of the London McDs that is a test location, so it serves menu items beyond the usual menu in Canada like Krispy Kreme doughnuts, the new Deli Sandwiched, and the McCafe gourmet coffee (though I am afraid of crappy McLattes and McBiscotti)

The same was with Jordan, but they did open one last year or the year before it and the first meal was sent to the King!

McDonalds has a world record in the number of stores. There are almost 55 McDonald restaurants in the UAE.

The sad thing is that no matter what the McDonald's like, the food is all the same poor quality. :(

That depends what you mean - Australia consistently has a higher level of quality attatched to their fast foods. McDonalds here has been trialling vastly different menus for a long time and now these are being adopted globally, in part due to their success and the campaign for more healthy diets.

Even KFC is trialling a greater range of salad options and healthier alternatives.

I have eaten all types of fast food all over the world and I will say Australia's fast food shits all over every other country - although PizzaHut is rather similar everywhere I have been. Maccas here is much more appealing as is KFC. KFC in asia and most of the US was disgusting - Australian KFC is light years ahead. Australia also serves their meal with less emphasis on sides and chips/fries form a larger part of each meal - BTW nothing can beat KFC chips.

I was disappointed about that because the food at Burger King tasted better!

They could make the branding more sutle such as the outlets in sydney cbd.

Australia also serves their meal with less emphasis on sides and chips/fries form a larger part of each meal - BTW nothing can beat KFC chips.

blimey you need to get out more! KFC chips? That processed shit?! Go and peel then fry your own potato then taste the different. Anyway what the hell is McDonalds Architecture?! They just mainly inhabit existing buildings, as most posts show, then stick a sign outside. Most of it is pretty evil especially the cancer charity Mcdonalds! How messed up is that. Anyone still in love with Mcdonalds go and read 'Fast Food Nation' or if you are not up to reading go and watch Super Size Me!

I have an old story from my childhood 30 years ago
regarding this building. The story has a couple of intriguing
coincidences relevant to this post and this site.
At the time the story takes place this building was the
Plaza picture-house. I went to see a movie there one
evening with my mother and afterwards dined at an eatery
fairly new to the area which had opened not 10 feet
away from the picture-house on the opposite corner
of a small laneway.
Coincidence #1: The nearby eatery was McDonalds (the
first in the city I think).
Coincidence #2: The movie was The Towering Inferno!
Amusing eh?
Anyway, the picture-house was eventually driven out of
business by a multiplex cinema which opened about the
time my story takes place. It opened on the other side of
the main street directly opposite and thrives to this day.
The old Plaza building went through a number of
incarnations including being a roller-rink during the disco craze
of the late 70's ( I could be found there on any given friday
night during my teenage rollerskating-nut phase, whisking
along to the beat with the rest of the herd-on-wheels. End-
ess laps were done and many hours whiled away just
skating to the music). I believe the building was then closed
until McDonalds took over.
[Footnote: I sampled my first McDonalds thickshake that
evening all those years ago and lost a tooth trying to extract
some refreshment from the defiantly thick mixture].

In a way i wish, but it appears that met square will be a boxy and blah/pseudo-mediterranean mall - imagine the philippine mcdonalds as a 4 story mall. they may change the design but i doubt it will b as adventurous/hi-tech as that toronto project.

A few years ago, The McD's in Earls Court, London used to use plasma sceens to display animated menus.

Nice idea, but it rather frustrating to keep taking the menus off the screen to show adverts.

I love this thread.
Some great buildings as well.

I've seen a documentary on the indoor design and architecture of Mc Donalds shops.
They are specially designed to make you feel unconfortable so you leave as quick as possible. Like that new costumers can come in.
But you will still come again because of the addicting sugars and additives mixed in the food.
Fascinating stuff.

Update ;)
208 McDonald's restaurants in Poland (only in Warsaw is 34 restaurants) and 144 McDrive. :)

The only one rock'n roll McDonald's restaurant in central Europe is in Warsaw.

One of many restaurants McDonald's in Gdańsk (Danzig):
http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/9289/p62703440kx.jpg
