This one is another one of my favorites in Atlanta. I love the design and the facade. The base is really cool. I went into the main lobby once and like thedesign of the lobby. The skywalks over Peachtree Street are really nice too. This building is one of many highlights in the Atlanta Skyline! 9/10! :D

ABC's Good Morning America was in SunTrust Plaza on Thursday broadcasting live. If you watched it, you saw how awesome SunTrust Plaza is. If you didn't see it, there is a video of the show in the forums.
They were on the 51st floor. If you look at the first pic, right in the corner right before you get to the cubes is an open deck where you can look out upon. They were live from up there looking at the Atlanta skyline. The show was absolutley awesome. No wonder they picked SunTrust Plaza to do the show from, it is one of Atlanta's best buildings and 2nd tallest.

Here is another pic of SunTrust Plaza from atop Bank of America. SunTrust Plaza covers up 2 of Atlanta's downtown buildings because it is so tall. You can barely see both of them.

8/10 - Good height, the facade dances with the light, and the "mini setbacks" add interest. The night lighting is also very good.

A larger setback or two at the base might have been nice, and, while I appreciate the green & growing thought, the plants on top of the entrace make it look like a huge flower pot....I'm also not quite sure about the crown, but at least - God be praised! - it isn't another flat roof!

10/10, my favorite atlanta skyscraper. i love all the intricate features of the facade, the mini setbacks, the way the crown tapers off in a sort of subtractive, cubic way. just an amzing tower, one of the best.

The terracing/setbacks are WAY overdone. However, I do like the blocky massing, which hearkens back to a more historical form. And like many other Atlanta highrises, this tower is a real beauty at night.

I just noticed that SunTrust Plaza and Bank of America Corporate Center in Charlotte are both 871 ft and 60 floors. Why does Bank of America rank #53 if they are tied with height and floors? Did they rank it 53 because "Bank" comes before "Sun" in the alphabet?

Suntrust should be higher than B of A in Charlotte. The top of the building is not a crown or spire. They're actually ocupiable floors where all the chief executives of Suntrust work. The occupiable floors go all the way to the top of the building. Basically, it's the tallest building in the south to the highest floor.

james2390
June 25th, 2004, 09:21 PM
It's strict on zoning, it doesn't have skyscrapers all over the place. They go in a line down Peachtree. There is 3 major buisness districts: Buckhead, Midtown, and Downtown.

What's the point of 3 CBD'S, WOULDN'T ONE DENSE SKYLINE BE BETTER???

This idea has such potential, but it was carried out only to be an average building. I like the terracing, find the color ok. I really like the very top part, except that it is ruined by the corners. If the top was more pyramidal I woould like it better, it just doesnt fit. Take the blocks at the very corner where the lower facade meets the crown and remove them and this building would be an 8 or so. I would soar more and looke more elegant and finished, because the rest of the building does a good job of doing that.

Really neat idea, I think the blocks do a lot to push our ideas of what the top of a building should (or could) look like. To my eyes I think it could've used a bit more height, it just looks disproportionately wide to me.

BTW, I don't think it's fair at all to accuse the Charlotte BoA of "cheating", considering the spire serves a reasonable purpose as to the appearance of the building and adds very little in height. It's nothing like the steel-cage monstrosity in Atlanta, which adds hundreds of feet to the height.

Interesting crown, and the setbacks are neat, but it doesn't seem to have much 'soar'. It needs to be slimmer, or perhaps a spire would help.

9.5/10. Well-defined facade and shine to the DT skyline. The only building to ever have a block crown - 3 stories more, but like Atlantic Center, this crown counts. I think Portman scaled this one out with Lego's way before building it.

The short attention span tower. Besides, I couldn't possibly give Portman any credit - bs post modern lobby with a pointless plaza in the front. One thing I can say about minimalist architecture - especially the brutalist style, is that there is uniformity. This tower looks like it doesn't know what it wants to do.

Well designed building, the setbacks in my opinion are great...I give it a 9.5 instead of a 10 because the structure does not feel or look as tall as 871ft. I've seen bank of america charlotte and suntrust plaza atlanta and for some reason b of a corporate center looks as if it's a 1000 footer and suntrust looks more like a 750 footer...Suntrust gives the illusion that it's a shorter structure than it really is. Other than that, this is a well designed structure.

I was an undergrad in arch. as this was being built, often watching it go up from my dorm window.

This is essentially John Portman's farewell gift to Atlanta, and was intended to make up for some of the street level misgivings of his other famous glass tower in Atlanta, the Peachtree Plaza hotel. Alas, his office viewed the construction of the (now) Bank of America building as their own little Empire/Chrysler race for glory. This caused a late change in the design that, IMO, has dramatically detracted from the building:

Originally the entire top massing of glass blocks was to comprise a winter garden or, at the least, be one large space lit from within at night. The sketches were wonderful and it was a nice way to include a top to the building that a) maintained the theme and b) was fully functional besides hiding HVAC units. However, certain powers convinced the owners that wasn't crowning enough and the building needed something in lieu of a spire. Thus, the pimple-looking light fixture that has nothing else to do with the form or texture was added to the top. Now the building's crown is comically referred to as the wedding cake, with that light being a tacky decoration.

The massing theme is nice and unique, but the play could've been even more dynamic. The plaza is nice and the entry forum among Portman's best.
