Sears Tower
Chicago, United States
HEIGHT: 442 meters/1,450 feet
FLOORS: 108
COMPLETION: 1974
ARCHITECT: Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill LLP
In the late 1960s, Sears Roebuck and Company, then the world's largest retailer with $8.9 billion in sales, decided to consolidate its administrative operations in downtown Chicago. The company determined it needed 3 million ft2 of office space with floors of 50,000 ft2 to accommodate its 13,000 employees in their major departments.
The first designs were for a boxy structure exclusively for Sears, but the architects and real estate advisors pressed for a taller tower with upper floors for tenants. The building slowly stretched to 4.5 million ft2 and 110 stories, and in July 1970, Sears trumpeted its plans for the world's tallest building. At 1454 feet, its height surpassed the World Trade Center by 100 feet and was, according to Sears "as tall as the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) will let us go." For more than twenty years after its completion in 1974, Sears Tower remained the tallest skyscraper, and it is still the largest.
As designed by architect Bruce Graham and engineer Fazlur Khan of the Chicago office of Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM), the structure was a "bundled tube" system of nine squares with sides of 75 feet (for an overall 225 x 225 ft), sheathed in a curtain wall of dark tinted glass. Above the fiftieth floor, some squares dropped away as the tower rose to create smaller floor plates and a distinctive stepped silhouette.
The tower is fronted by a separate tourist entrance, the Skydeck Pavilion added in 1985 by Skidmore Owings and Merrill. The Sears attracts some 1.5 million tourists each year, despite the loss of its title to the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur in 1997. Though no longer the tallest building in the world, the Tower is still title to the world's highest occupiable floor and the highest roof deck and elevator ride. On a clear day it is possible to see four states from the top.

I have to give it a 10... I drove past this thing, at night, on I-90 passing through Chicago on my way to Michigan this summer, and damn.... I reaffirmed my faith in myself as someone who doesn't need to watch the road at all times when he's driving... *lol*

Never seen it in person but from pics it don't look very special.

Ah, the legendary Sears Tower!
Well, it's TALL alright! :D
But, just like the company whose name it bears: it's admirable, but no beauty. Sound efficiency, but no elegance. Built to last but bound to chip. Aspiration but no panache. Great features, though. :)
OK. 7.0

8/10 - I've been there - simply awesome height, definitely proud and soaring, and the bronze glass cen really dance with the light. Plus, the setbacks move it beyond boxiness.
But the plaza isn't all that impressive, and the tower does just seem to slam into the sidewalk.
By the way, one elevtor goes straight to the observation deck, and it has "elevator entertainment" - a screen over the door, in which you can see, as you listen to the voice of an "elevator pilot" who swears he knows he's doing, an image of the elevator crashing out of the top of the tower, zipping past the space station, falling back INTO the tower, etc...

I like the building at the same time I don't. It's cool that it is as tall as it is and it's one of the last remaning skyscraper icons left in the US. On the other hand the thing looks massive and its multuple boxes stacked on top of each other.
I give it a 8.0

I agree it is still the worlds tallest skyscraper. If you put that building next to the petronas towers in skyscraperpage.com, it looks taller. You don't need words to desrcibe this building. It gets a high rating from me. I wonder how it would look like with one antenna in the middle of the rooftop? Would people in Chicago like it or dislike it? Would it look better or worse?

Also, the building looks different from all sides, which is a major plus.
10 points for this classic beauty !

Good point but I wonder if there's any truth to it.
I think this one deserves a 10/10, it's just beautiful, dark, tall, everything I'd want in a monster of a skyscraper.
The Sears has been called a "box" a little too much I think, and it's not even the correct accusation.
It's not a box, it's a "boxes" if that makes any sense...

And I'm sure you're the ultimate judge of architectural skill. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is universally regarded as one of the great architects of the 20th century, and all his designs were boxes.
You may prefer cheap kitschy ripoffs of 1920s art deco skyscrapers (albeit lacking their elegance of form), but you people with the "ugly black box" comments are astonishingly ignorant.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe built "black boxes", and is considered one of the great architects of the 20th century by people who know far more about architecture than most of you ever will. Open your damn eyes, and realize there's a lot more to architectural design than cool pointy shapes.

My comment of Sears Tower is just my oppinion, that doesn´t mean that everyone must have the same oppinion.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is ,in yours words(or words of people who know far more about architecture than most of us ever will), one of the greatest architects of the 20th century, but not IMO.
Monoton black boxes are not creativ enough for me. But ofcourse you don´t have to share my oppinion.

It's not as much the Sears Tower's height as the black color and shape that I really love.
Of course the height is also good, but IMO it's not that simple to bunch together 9 black boxes and make it look so beautiful.
Another thing I think boxes have over any other form of architecture is that the final occupied floor of the building such as the Sears is right up there with the official building height.
One of the things that impresses me about the Sears Tower is not only that it's 1450 ft tall, but that an average person like me can actually go that high up. (just try going to the very pinnacle height of the Petronas for example, good luck getting past the security and climbing up the spire to reach the height you'd be at if you were in the Sears Tower observatory!)

just checked the poll. Who are the 29 people who gave it less than 3, I know everyones entitled to there opinion, but it`s the Sears Tower, height and stature alone should give it a high marking among skyscraper fans. I know it`s a bit boxy and not really imaginative but it`s starkness and height stands out on the Chicago Skyline and I can`t (or wouldn`t) imagine it in any other form...that`s why i gave it 9/10....pity those who gave it less than 3 haven`t got the guts or range of vocabulary to explain why their marking was so low

In 1995 DeStefano and Partners completed a $70,000,000 redevelopment and repositioning of Sears Tower, the world's tallest building. The four-year project included new lobbies, major new entry canopies, a free-standing glass-walled pavilion for tourist access to the popular skydeck and the modernization and redesign of the building's 100 high-speed elevators. With careful planning and staging, construction was completed while the building was fully occupied.

Dominating with 110 floors, the Sears Tower has grown to be a global icon of the skyscraper. I think it deserves no less then a 10/10 because its powerful, but at the same time peaceful and beautiful.
To add to additional comments, yes the 103rd floor Skydeck is breathtaking... but to be honest the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center is even better. Situated on the northern end of the Magnificent Mile, it offers a clear view of the Loop to the south, while the Sears in pretty much IN the Loop so you can't as good of an overall view as from the Hancock.

As a Chicagoan, it hurts to dis our town's big daddy, but Sears is not what I would choose as our standard bearer. For one thing, because of the irregular set-backs, it looks different from every angle. While some of the views are great, others aren't just bad, they're awful.
The other thing is that when you think of really good supertall buildings, you think of words like "soaring" and "inspiring." Sears makes me think of words like "hulking" and "looming." It's just too big at the base, and the blockiness doesn't help soften it in any way.
Still, I'll take it over a building half its size in the same location. I'd just prefer it if Hancock were our tallest. It's the best of our big 3.

The Sears Tower will always be taller than the Petronas. Although now, it will be number 2, after Jim Jao (spelling?) bld. It is a huge, imposing structure; it's immense, however, I do like the design a little better on the John Hancock. Does anyone know if they still have the bar at the top? I went four years ago and had a great Kettle One and cranberry while soaking up the view. This last summer I didn't make it, but would like to know if it's still there.

Being the worlds tallest building (i don't consider the Petronas to be the worlds tallest) the Sears deserves no less than a ten. if i could i would have given it a 100/10 because it is simply an amazing structure. anyone who gave it less than an 8 is just a hater. the sears is the biggest, best, the most magnificent and the coolest skyscraper any city can have. living in chicago i have had the privilege to get on top of the sears tower skydeck and believe me it is the most exciting thing i have ever experience. the view is amazing especially at night.

One of the worlds' greatest. I love the size and the practicality of it, since there is no spire, etc, its all in use and its a massize amount of floor space. Anyone who gives this building a low score is crazy. I'm starting to think people are only judging these buildings in "rate our talls" on asthetics, after looking at the sometimes-skewed results. IT WAS WTB FOR 30 YEARS. That alone makes it deserve a ten.

Well if height is all that matters, why have people rate them at all? I happen to think that the Empire State Building is a nicer looking building than the Sears Tower--a 10 compared to an 8 (at best) in my book. If you disagree, then fine, but don't call other people "crazy" for not agreeing with you that height is everything.

Sears looks absolutely enormous, not just height-wise but also in terms of overall width/volume. Does anyone know how much total floor space (in square feet) is contained within the building?

The Sears Tower has 4.5Msqft total, with about 3.6Msqft rentable office space. This makes it the single largest privately owned office building in the world, the second overall after the Pentagon's 9Msqft/6.5Msqft respectively

Classic! It definitely humbles you when u see it in person- enormous every way you see it. Historic in that it was WTB. Not the most complicated design but deserves respect for what it is...... amazing!

Looks different from every angle, soaring, and just a classic....this is what massive is all about...it portrays an image of being in charge and masculinity which is associated with power and might...unlike Petronas or Taipei which are more feminine in design and portray a more warming feel, this tower just says, YO HERE I AM, very American, I love it

10/10. Sears Tower deserves the title "ICON." At 1450 feet and 110 stories, Sears Tower commands respect; every other building in Chicago except for its cousin the John Hancock Tower can bow down to it. The dark suit and bowtie facade is what makes it what it is: pretty, tall and Amazon style. The design is like 6 separate buildings clay-molded into one. This is the skyscraper to Heaven, I'll tell you what. You can see it for miles, on the ground and Wisconsin and Indiana on all sides of the observatory deck. Keep holdin' down the record, Sears Tower.

I used to talk to the Sears Tower after coming home from preschool every day from my family's third-floor apartment.
This thing, you have to see in person to understand. There it is, big, and you get closer and closer, and you figure you've got to be there by now, but you're not, and by the time you get to the foot of the building you feel like you're immersed in this black monstrosity.
No, the aesthetics are not up-to-date; but it has always been more of an obelisk than a skyscraper. Where the Empire State's contours speak--brag--of its verticality, the Sears Tower is a silent creature.
Chicago, I think, has a thing for obelisk-buildings.

SO many give them a 10 ^^
This building is so ugly. Its black, its simpel, it`s like Lego.
The only fact that so many love this building is because it is so tall.
Everyboddy would hate it if it was 200m shorter.
It is really ugly.
The 311 South Wacker Drive is 10 times more beautiful. It would be nicer if they changed the size but not the design. Everyboddy would say: Look at the ugly Sears Tower. It`s destroying the view of the 311 South Wacker Drive.
So please be more honest.

I love this building. People complain that its not "beautiful" and that those who like it are over scoring. Well I probably in the minority here but I like buildings that actually LOOK like buildings. The Sears Tower is truly the embodiment of Chicago's most dominating characteristic; business. The people who work in the Sears go to work in a building, not a sculpture.
The Sears: simple, too the point, dominating, and awe inspiring. Unfortunately I live in the burbs :sleepy:, but everyday I see this monster's silhouette in the background, and after years upon years of looking at it in the distance, its image still excites me every time I see it in the morning.
The Sears Tower deserves nothing less then a 10/10. This building is truly Chicago.

i love this building. It basically makes chicago, chicago. when i was 10 years old and i went to the observation deck of that thing on the 107th floor it was amazing. the express elevator takes you up in just under a minute. the ears are popping, etc. you finally get to the top and the elevator doors open and you're just looking out these massive glass windows at the city below you. On a clear day, you can see milwaukee to the north and you can even see part of indiana where the bottom of lake michigan is located. its so amazing and completely unlike anything i've seen.
people criticize it for its blockiness but this structure is absolutely astounding especially being constructed in 1974. the blockiness makes it unique as well as very strong.
this building started my early childhood obsession with skyscrapers and it has ultimately made me completely fall in love with big cities (and i live in a small town, so im very excited about going to college in milwaukee this fall)

Old, black, ugly, boxy thing. But somehow it doesn't fit too wrong in the classic Chicago skyline, and the massiveness and extravaganza of such a project, which is still one of the tallest in the world while it was built 30 years ago gives it a boost ;-)
So that will be 7.5

Who the hell voted the Sears Tower as less than a 9!!!! What's the matter with u people?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?:weird:Its boxed shape makes it very unique and its black color is great. I think its boxy characteristics and its black coloring makes the Sears Tower look massive, elegant and makes it appear as though it is a great giant standing 1,454 feet above the magnificent chicago skyline. I drive regularly around downtown Chicago and i have to say this my favorite skyscraper of chicago and the world.
This magnificent skyscraper is one of the greatest technological developments of the 20th century.
It is one of the tallest in the world and it deserves no less than a 9.
Those people who voted 3 or less are crazy. The Sears Tower is the king of all skyscrapers.:bow::bow::bow:
I thank those who gave the Sears the recognition it deserves as the great skyscraper it is!:applause::applause::applause::applause::applause:
