Petronas Towers
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
HEIGHT: 452 meters/1,483 feet
FLOORS: 88 floors
COMPLETION: 1998
ARCHITECT: Cesar Pelli & Associates Architects
On April 15, 1996, the Council on Tall Buildings named the Petronas Towers the tallest in the world, passing the torch to a new continent. Although the project's developers, a consortium of private investors in association with the Malaysian government and Petronas, the national oil company, had not originally set out to surpass Chicago's Sears Tower, they did aspire to construct a monument announcing Kuala Lumpur's prominence as a commercial and cultural capital. In the design of American architect Cesar Pelli they found a winning scheme--twin towers of elegant proportions with a slenderness ratio (height to width) of 9.4--that would capture not only the title but the public imagination.
Pelli's design answered the developer's call to express the culture and heritage of Malaysia by evoking Islamic arabesques and employing repetitive geometries characteristic of Muslim architecture. In plan, an 8-point star formed by intersecting squares is an obvious reference to Islamic design; curved and pointed bays create a scalloped facade that suggests temple towers. The identical towers are linked by a bridge at the 41st floor, creating a dramatic gateway to the city.
The structure is high-strength concrete, a material familiar to Asian contractors and twice as effective as steel in sway reduction. Supported by 75-by-75-foot concrete cores and an outer ring of widely-spaced super columns, the towers showcase a sophisticated structural system that accommodates its slender profile and provides from 14,000 to 22,000 square feet of column-free office space per floor
Other features include a curtain wall of glass and stainless steel sun shades to diffuse the intense equatorial light; a double-decker elevator system with a sky lobby transfer point on the 41st floor to accommodate the thousands of people who use the complex daily; and a mixed-use base featuring a concert hall and shopping center enveloped by nearly seventy acres of public parks and plazas.
In both engineering and design, the Petronas Towers succeed at acknowledging Malaysia's past and future, embracing the country's heritage while proclaiming its modernization. The end result says Pelli, is a monument that is not specifically Malaysian, but will forever be identified with Kuala Lumpur.

10/10. Alot of care was taken in design, I love the overall shape, the gleaming steel facade, the skybridge and the way the mall is integreted into the base of the building. I was very impressed when I visited these buildings in 1998!

I give the Petronas Towers a:
9.99999999999/10
.....but only because skyscrapers are a work of art, and they can always be improved slightly. Thus, no building is perfect, and will ever get a 10/10 rating from me. But this may damn well be the two buildings that come as close to it as any building ever will.

The towers suffer from the problem that many Asian towers suffer from - oriental influences on skyscrapers simply do not work. They are fine for low-rise structures. But once you start mixing influences - you end up with a mutt that is neither one thing or the other. In other words - a jack of all trades, good at many things, excellent at none. And unfortunately, Petronas suffers because of this.
And the skybridge is a major faux-paux, although, functionally it works. So that is a wash in my book.
They are the worlds best example of underachieving architecture.

I think that it's very interesting when architects choose older influences for designs on modern skyscrapers. For example, the Gothic influence on the design of PPG in Pittsburgh as well as the Tribune Tower in Chicago, among many others. Besides that, it really isn't Oriental architecture, it's Islamic architecture, which can be very beautiful and ornate. Like I said, I love it when ancient architectual styles (including Oriental styles) are used on skyscrapers, it makes for very pleasing designs. If architects didn't do that, then all of our skyscrapers would just be boxes.

The Petronas Twin Tower was built on land previously the place for horse race track. Now, the place had changed to KLCC.
Another best example is the Mines Resort City where the place was formerly the largest tin mine in the world.

i love this twin tower because it's very Malaysian.. a fine contribution for 'identity-crisis' KL skyline..
i give it 9.8/10...
oriental elements make asian buildings unique and easily recognised.. same as ESB and Chrysler.. they are uniquely NYC.. unlike Seagram or Lever House which u can find similar looking building around the world.. they even called it international style.. these buildings are beautiful but not unique..

8.5/10 - they've got soaring height to spare, the overall design is pleasantly unique, and they sure are impressive at night. But that skyway looks like an afterthought because it doesn't fit the rest of the design. In any case, t's always nice to see inventive new skyscraper designs.

I consider the project to be one fo Pelli's masterworks, if only for one singular reason. He succeeded where so many other Western architects have failed. He successfully incorporated forms from the local culture into a commercial highrise building in a way that had rarely been accomplished beforehand in the Far East. Another interesting thing about the buildings is something that Pelli readily points out himself. The towers are defined as much by the void betweem them, as they are by the form of the towers themselves.
I gave them a 9.5/10

The pinnacles, the crowns and the spheres are the most amazing parts of the towers. You should see them from near to admire the beauty. Problem is that we don't have close-up pictures of them.
Are you hating them because they're beautiful :)?
How do we by-pass the security to go up the towers? Does szehoong know how to do so?

Without reading any previous comments I'm just going to pop in and give the Petronas 9.5/10.
This is a landmark project. It will stand the test of time, IMO it's already a classic. I drooled over these towers the first time I saw the proposal, incredibly they are even better in reality. WOW.
The only missing .5 is solely because of their placement in KL. I'd like to see them as the pinnacles soaring out of a tight cluster, I've got an obsession with density! :D

They are nice skyscrapers, and would look perfect in a city with thousands of skyscrapers like Hong Kong. However, they look like they are sitting alone. Also, the Skybridge is a good idea, but looks like an afterthought. Plus, I dislike spires making this building the world's tallest.
However, it is still a beautiful skyscraper.

Totally disagree. Petronas Towers are simply great and PETRONAS is one of the richest companies in the world. They can afford it and they want to make it perfect. Now, it is simply a 99.99% perfect architecture.

Appears that the enthusiastic efforts of chiefly East Asian builders like those in China and Taiwan has caused some to write-off any attempt to fuse "oriental" elements into architecture as failures. Perhaps I would like to bring to the general audience's attention, that a huge majority of developments in the Greater China region...(PRC, ROC, HK, even in areas where east asian builders are at work like Malaysia and Singapore) are all influenced by a thing called "Fengshui". Even seemingly "western" looking skyscrapers have come under the Fengshui's strong influence, which includes almost every major development in HK for eg. Now would anyone with one broad stroke dismiss all of these buildings as architectural failures?

I meant to say that the alignment of Petronas Towers is a disadvantage.
For instance, the former WTC-towers in New York were placed relative to each other in such a way that the total image became more dynamic.
With the Petronas Towers there's no alternative for it's present alignment.
In fact, this will always be the case as long as you stick with the combination 'numbers of towers=2' and 'shape of each tower=identical and round'.

While I dont like cluttered towers (arabesque especially), I can appreciate the thought, especially because any time I hear a Malaysian person talk about it, they love the way it was done. Skybridge is useful and cool, if not as elegant as the rest of the building. The twin effect is also nice. A really great building, one of the best in the world. Although there is no supporting cast of towers around, still looks good in the skyline.

I've given the Petronas towers 9.5 because I gave the Empire State 9.5: but perhaps I should have given both 9. Neither is perfect, but both are excellent.
The big fault in the Petronas Towers is the skybridge, which is terrible.
Despite what has been said previously here, I think the combination of Asian or Islamic traditional forms with high-rise urban architecture has been employed very well here- excellently!- and the towers are both instantly recognizable, and, also, aesthetically pleasing. As well, they cut out that equatorial sunlight.
But that bridge is a blot on the whole design. I saw the designs for this building long before it was finished, and I thought that then too. In my humble opinion, the bridge should be pulled down and replaced by an arch-structure which is in sympathy with the shape of the towers themselves.

I love the Petronas and have had the privilege of seeing them on 3 trips to Malaysia.
There was a programme on TV about their construction a couple of nights ago. Apparently one of the reasons for the skybridge was an escape route in the event of a fire in one of the towers. It took over 30 HOURS to hoist the skybridge up rain stopped play a few times and lightning was striking the bridge.
The PM also had a hand in the design of the towers

However I notice that many in the States and the western world don't like the Petronas towers, some have even noted the Islamic design as inappropriate. Maybe they think that these towers symbolize Islamic power. However, let me tell you that Kuala Lumpur is a multicultural, multifacetted and a cosmopolitan city. The Islamic Art does not represent the towers as Islam. Anyhow, please do not run the towers down only because they are not located somewhere in a more "civilized" place like the US. Nuff said period.

Actually the interlocking squares is NOT a religious symbol. Although many had said so - it is not. It is just so happened that this design are found mostly in Islamic Architecture hence its relations with the religion. Most symbolic architecture elements and design for Islam are based on geometry. The only Islamic symbolisms are the religious writings in Arabic (example: the Saudi Arabia flag) ;)
Again....the spires are an integral part of the aesthetics of the towers. Without em the towers aren't 'complete'. Just bear in mind that the original plans doesn't include the world's tallest building unlike Sears, WTC, ESB and Taipei 101. If the WTB is part of the plans.......do you think Petronas and Mai Holdings (the company which conceptualised KLCC) would have settled for something like just the spires to top Sears and spark the ugly WTB debate? They are wealthy enough to built a clear winner :)

Listen.. they're very attractive towers, and the symmetry is great. BUT, there is no way in hell anyone in their right mind can say these towers surpass the Sears Tower in height! No way, no how... I willl NEVER accept that. And the Council of Tall Buildings can kiss my as* for ever declaring them so....
8/10
very uninteresting :ancient:

Uhoh ^^
They are an infinite source of inspiration for me ^^
I'd refer to them more like to a monument than a skyscraper, definitely.
Cesar Pelli's masterpiece, obviously, and the only real beauty WTB since Chrysler (and imo this is even much better than Chrysler).
The stainless steel cladding is a wonder, it changes color with light, and always looks good. The shape is perfectly harmonious, and it works as an unmistakable landmark. The plaza is one of the best in the world, I guess.
OK, this would be a 10 for me, but perfection does not exist in this world ;-)
The cleaning equipment is too visible at the top of the tower, that is, very often.
That's really the only thing I can think of ;-)

I just don't see the appeal. If they were smaller, we'd never hear of them. The little ball at the base of each antenna reminds me of a Christmas tree ornament. The shape is ok, but the texture of the building stinks. The only think I like is that they appeal to both an Islamic heritage and the old New York skyscraper model.

9/10 I've heard that only one of the towers is occupied, while the other is vacant. Is this true?

I don't really like this one for the fact that i heard the only reason they are taller than the Sears Tower is because of their gigantic spears...is that true??
If it is true then why the hell was it named the tallest if is was only because of its spears...isn't that cheating in some way?
Overall, it looks O.K., not my favorite though. I would give it a 7, however it was developed by the great Cesar Pelli...so i give it an 8/10

It's really a beautiful building, because of the highest bridge connecting the two towers. Also, i have seen a movie about the building called Entrapment. Is there really a "World Clearance Bank" on the top of it?
