Jin Mao Tower
Shanghai, China

HEIGHT: 421 meters/1,380 feet
FLOORS: 88
COMPLETION: 1998
ARCHITECT: Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill LLP

The Jin Mao Building is situated at the mouth of the Yan'an Dong Lu Tunnel, in Pudong, adjacent to Century Avenue, which is the core of Lujiazui, Pudong, a finance and trade center. To the east is a gorgeous view of the prosperous New Area of Pudong. To the west is the beautiful Huang Pu River; and the southern view encompasses the Zhangyang Road business and trade zone. The structure is adjacent to the 100,000 sqm Central Greens, just north of the building. The surrounding road network is well developed, enabling smooth traffic flow. One may take the tunnel bus or the subway line to reach the Jin Mao Building. It takes only two minutes to get to the downtown area in Puxi using the tunnel.

A supertall structure exemplifying traditional Chinese style, Jin Mao Building is the symbolic architecture of Shanghai's entry into 21st century. Being China's tallest and the world's third tallest, Jin Mao Building is ranked after Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Sears Tower in Chicago, US. Designed by the Chicago Office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and completed in August 1998, Jin Mao Building covers 2.36 million sqm. It is 420.5 meters in height, reaching 88 levels, among which 3 are basements, covering 58,000 sqm, one for catering, and the other two for basement garage.

The Jin Mao Building is high-tech, high-rise office building combining offices, upscale stores and a hotel. Utilizing spacious and bright areas, levels 3 through 50 can accommodate up to 10,000 people. The 51st and 52nd levels are for mechanical and electrical equipment. Levels 53 to 87 are occupied by the Grand Hyatt - the world's tallest super 5-Star hotel. Levels 56 through 87 contain a spectacular 27-meter wide atrium, 142 meters tall. The atrium is surrounded by 555 guest rooms of various sizes and styles, and numerous Chinese and Western-style restaurants. The 86th level is an exclusive club for entrepreneurs. The 87th level is a restaurant with open-air seating. With a height of 341 meters, the 88th level is the highest sightseeing level in China, and can accommodate more than 1000 tourists. It takes only 45 seconds for two super-speed elevators to take tourists to the sightseeing level from the 1st level basement. The speed of each elevator is 9.1m per second. Tourists on the sightseeing level will have a bird's-eye view of Shanghai's new look. The Jin Mao Building has 79 lifts, among which 18 are escalators that are able to carry guests to any level rapidly, safely and comfortably. The annex building is 6 stories tall. One floor contains a theatre and exhibition hall, one contains a banquet area and the other three contain retail malls and recreation centers. The annex is constructed in the form of a square, protected by glass walls. It is equipped with the latest office building technology, including advanced water pumps, heating equipment, ventilation and fire fighting facilities, as well as the most up-to-date security and automatic monitoring systems.

The Jin Mao Building has established itself as the new pinnacle in the international supertall construction domain. Its outstanding design and predominant location make it a prime landmark in Shanghai.

Pagoda architecture does not translate well to skyscraper design. Jin Mao does what it can with what was given to it - and is great sense of height does get some points.

Gotta be one of the best buildings that SOM (Adrian Smith) has ever done. It is a complete building IMO, in that it has a strong concept, good context to it local culture and surroundings, a striking design and alot of inner beauty to boot. Without a doubt, it's one of my favorite skyscrapers in all of East Asia.

Jin Mao Building is really my favourite in Asia. Perhaps in the world! I like the setbacks, the spire, the materials which were used etc.

I like that the building is square in plan (seen from above) and that it's so slender and vertical.

I'll gladly be the first to say that I gave Jin Mao Building a 10/10.

Well I give this a 10, and this boy doesn't hand out 10s easily! Great detailing and proportions, and the classic influence is apparent. The best part is the rhythm of the design, articulated both vertically and horizontally. That's a skill that seems forgotten in a lot of buildings.

9/10 - Very impressive - tremendous height, with a very nice, many-sided shape that really stands out, especially near the top. And the graceful, almost delicate gridwork of the facade helps the height. Plus, the spire flows nicely from the rest of the tower, rising up from a series of setbacks (Hint, to some of you other architects out there!)

Maybe a few setbacks at the base might have helped, but still this is pretty amazing and, IMO, a good combination of traditonal and modern styling.

And I love the almost ethereal air it has when it's lit up at night.

Impressive interiors, too - but where are the blinds or curtains?

And what's the height, please?

A more angular Petronas Tower. The characteristics of the ancient chinese pagoda expressed in a futuristic design.

Unlike most other towers, where only the roof and facade is emphasized and the body neglected
The clever arrangement of protruding geometry structure especially at the top really created the impresion of a smooth ascending peaked tower.

Rich in detail which resemble ancient hindu temple in some way too.
Not to mention the color of steel blend well with its futuristic theme. A truly master piece 9.5/10!

Whoever gave it a 3.5 or less is just far too retarded so I'm going to let it slide, but as for the people who marked below 5, they should not be attending this site. The sheer height of this building is INCREDIBLE. If someone can't appreciate that, then they should find a gun QUICK!

I never cared much for Jin Mao - always thought the chinese style tiers were a bit 'odd' etc..

But having just seen it in person - and *particularly* at nightime - my impression has changed completely..

It's an awesome tower - just grand and majestic - towering over the rest of the city at the back of Pudong like a grand old relative..

At night - with the trademark Shanghai haze - it looks about 700m & 200 stories tall!! Truly amazing..

I've just stayed in the Hyatt in the Jin Mao for a week's break in Shanghai and the building is awesome both inside and out. Close up, the external detailing is fantastic, and from further away the tower's silhouette soars gracefully. But the best thing for me was the tower's tiny footprint: it can't be more than 50m by 50m on the ground. Truly majestic.

Out of the "Asian Historic" Spires (Petronas, etc), this is my favorite. A little too ornamental for my taste, but soaring and graceful. Needs more large buildings around it, cant wait till the area around it fills up. A really impressive tower all around, if a little too complicated. (8.5 is a high mark from me!)

SOM were sensitive enough to give it an Asiatic look.True!! Interestingly enough skyscrapers.com have given Jin Mao along with Taipei's 101 their styles the apt term of "Oriental Rivalism".

Both tower's designs based on the numeral 8, considered lucky in Chinese numerology.

Shanghai's Jin Mao Taipei's 101 (For comparative purposes):

Awesome height and presence on the skyline.

There's something I don't like about the facade, though. I'm not sure, maybe it's the opacity of the windows, or the colour, I can't quite explain it.

^Agreed! I think this one would have been a much better design for a WTB
than Taipei 101 as far as integrating Chinese culture into architecture. I gave it a 9/10. Until the completion of its future neighbor,Shanghai WFC, this will be my favorite supertall in the Orient - with the Bank of China in HK a close 2nd place.

I have to say that this building looks so much better in real than on photographs ^^
I really don't know how they manage to clean it with all those wire-thingies, but the result is there: it's at the same time shiny-glassy and shiny-metallic, which gives it a unique look and very interesting reflections. The spire is awesome. The observation deck is awesome. The hotel is awesome. The lobby is hmm... so-so, but the plaza is nice. The main drawback is still that it doesn't manage to look so good on photographs, most of the time.
Oh, I forgot, excellent lighting, but too bad it stops at the hotel floors :-/
