Bank of America Corporate Center
Charlotte, USA
HEIGHT: 265m/871 feet
FLOORS: 60 floors
COMPLETION: 1992
ARCHITECT: Cesar Pelli
Known as the Bank of America Corporate Center, this building, which houses the central offices of the bank, is found in the geographical, historical and economic center of Charlotte. Its construction responded to both the economic profitability of the promoter and the possibility of culturally and economically revitalizing the city centre, forming part of the public complex.
Two garden squares and the Founders Hall (a civic and shopping center) are found in the base of the tower. Its silhouette, which is characterized by the breeching towards the interior in ascending direction of the curved facades, is a landmark in the cityscape.
The main facades are slightly curved and stepped back as the tower rises. The plinth is clad in black granite and the entrance framed by black marble columns. The pronounced use of stone on the lower floors stands for the stability of the building and - hopefully - of the company too. The vertically oriented window apertures, surrounded by beige granite, underscore the builder's desire to draw the gaze of the observer upwards, over each of the setbacks to the almost gothic style finial, where an ingeniously illuminated crown dominates the skyline of Charlotte by night.

8.5/10 - This tower has good, soaring height, helped by the setbacks and indentations, and the graceful curve to the whole facade. The sleek facade dances in the light well, though it might be a bit bland on cloudy days. Even the top is pretty nice, especially at night.
THe tower's still a bit bulky, however, and I can't tell how it relates to the base.
Still, a nice, crisp tower overall, with a certain amount of elegance.

The best crown on any buildings I have ever seen! It is awesome at night! It lights up fantasticly! It is awesome looking during the day too! The height is great, the design is great, I cannot say one bad thing about this building! No wonder Bank of America made it the HQ, it is the best Bank of America building IMO.
For height, design, and crown...I give the Bank of America Corporate Center a 10!

easily one of the best and most beautiful skyscrapers in America!!..if not the world....
everything from the setbacks to the crown is perfect....Pelli really outdid himself designing this masterpiece...a brilliant and stunning landmark for Charlotte...this beauty gets the ultimate...10/10!!

This is a very nice scraper, the curved façade and the setbacks work very well, and even the little square windows fit in. The crown is great, all except for the very top ring of, um, spires? sticks? anyway, the setbacks just end abruptly there and result in a kind of bottle look. It would have been great if the sticks tapered off into a tall spire. 8.5/10

The crown tops off the building very well, and it's setbacks are layed out very well.
The only thing it loses a mark for, is it's slightly boring facade.

Who could possibly go past its beautiful elegant curved ediface's and its horizonal and vertical setbacks.
I've always liked this one's spiked birthday cake candel crown.
Looks beautiful in the night shots...and let's face it....the job of a scraper is 24/7.
An elegant tall.
A definite yummy 10/10

I can't imagine living in a city where there was one scraper to talk about.
This one is nice enough (nice crown) but gee willikers, it is so over-rated because there's nothing else much going on. It's reputation has been skewed by fervent hometown boosterism, but PR doesn't make great architecture. At best, it is above average.

Beautiful soaring elegant beauty this is. Looks even ahead of its time for 1992 with its crowned top. Would look even better with a central spire IMHO. Love the slight curved facade too. Would get extra points if it were a little more sleek.

Perhaps I'm guilty of homerism, but I honestly think this building has a legit case as one of the best in the nation.
The design, first of all, is splendid. You can see hints of a lot of different influences: Gothic, Art Deco, Postmodern, and so forth. The lobby is dominated by a huge fresco, which leaves a fantastic impression if you only get to experience the building from the very bottom.
Also, since BoA has funded the three tallest towers in Charlotte, the buildings that dominate the skyline "match" each other. Even the non-BoA scrapers seem to fit well with the design of those three. And, of course, the lynchpin is this building. Essentially it's the style-setter for the entire downtown area.
It's not too flamboyant, not too artsy, not too aloof. I find it very hard to imagine a better design for the largest building in this particular city.

9.5/10. I like the crown -- it looks shiny and glassy. Would have been the tallest in the southeast too but BofA Charlotte's evil cheating cousin in Atlanta stole the honor with that unfinished spire. 1/2 point off for stealing the corporate HQs from Frisco's, but at least it is the second original BofA after that one.

I give the Bank of America Corporate Center a 10 not only because of its pleasingness to the eye but because I know of only a few other buildings that are so entwined with their city and all their city represents. This building is currently the tallest in town, and stands on one corner of the historic intersection that gave birth to this city in the 1750's. In this city named for Queen Charlotte, this building sports an unmistakable crown, and has exactly the number of floors as there were years in Queen Charlotte's reign. Meanwhile in the lobby, the walls crawl with allegorical frescoes of the city's and the state's founding, their industries, their people, and their future.
So... as I said, there are very few buildings out there so brimming with the symbolism of their setting. Everything about this building says Charlotte and not only that but North Carolina. And therefore, since it's not only beautiful to look at, but is an utterly perfect match for its city and state, I give it a 10.

I love this building.....my question to ya'll is.....when will it be overtaken by a new "tallest" in Charlotte?

I love the BOA center, but I can only hope it will be overtaken in the next 5 years. I have a feeling Wachovia may have something in the works to overtake its Charlotte Rival.

Here are renderings of two new buildings > 50 stories for central Charlotte (neither will be taller than BOA's headquarters).

Hi folks from a guy was grew up in Charlotte! Charlotte is known as the Queen City, named after Queen Charlotte of England. Hence the breathtaking crown sitting atop Bank of America's crown jewel.
Folks, does it get any better than this? I give it a strong 10.
Bank of America Corporate is a hallmark of grace and elegance..soars over Charlotte's fast growing skyline as a sort of beacon. A beacon to banking, business, and money---three things Charlotte is renown for.
I predict a taller building will be built soon in Uptown Charlotte. I just hope whatever follows as the new tallest will echo BofA's tower's prestige:)

This s a worthy successor to Chrysler Building and Empire State Building. It's a little pity this one wasn't build in some biger city and made 100m higher. It would be among world most famous skyscrapers then.

No, not in the near future. There was one plan by Wachovia several years back to trump it with a supertall, but those never materialized.
IMHO, anything built taller than this one would have to be absolutely spectacular. Its design and location are obviously intended to make it the centerpiece of the city.
