Alright this thing is nuts, and requires a second look to be sure...maybe one of the craziest structures in the world???

I definitely agree, the building is so strange looking, but Iguess strange isn't always bad.

It looks pretty cool hovering over Grange Park....

There will be another interesting building hovering over the park just beside OCAD when the south wing of Gehry's AGO project gets built...

Grange park has so much potential... there's the OCAD, the Grange (just under the AGO), and the Gehry addition. You've also got a great view of the CN tower and the skyline from that park. It needs some work though... it needs new park benches throughout (not just the in the south entrance), newer lamp posts, maybe a few more trees, and a nice fountain... right in the middle of that open space in the above pic. Then we'd have a serious park.

Anyway, about the OCAD... I love how it looms over McCaul, and it's BIG!! Everytime I walk under it and look up, I feel like it winds me a bit. It's just such a strange thing to look up at. As with everything, pictures don't do it justice.

I'll give it a 9.

this is the best thing to happen to architecture recently. It is a simple, brilliant gesture. Hovering the addition over the existing school solves all the space issues, and makes a very bold statement. It's massing is something to be experienced at street level.

The building itself exemplifies the question of 'what is art'? What is a building? Is this beautiful, or vulgar? The contrevesy this building has attracted could not be more appropriate for a school such as OCAD. And isn't that the most important thing?

So many people bitch about it's context, how it ruins the street. These people have no clue... this building MAKES the street.

BTW... the best time to observe this building is at night. The brightly painted windows glow their colours... it's very nice.

The interior is bland, but the windows are great for sitting in... and you actually do feel like you're floating above the city. Very cool. The 'tabletop' is, I believe, 15 'storeys' above the ground.

The cladding was severly compromised.... the end result is satisfactory, but it could have been more spectacular. Extra points for continuing the cladding (and the pixels) underneath the building...

Having said all of that, I think a building like this really seperates 'the mice from the men', to use a tired cliche. Those who simply dismiss it by recoiling in horror, or saying 'it looks wierd', probably have no business commenting on architecture (or design) anyway.

Oh, also, I personally don't think it looks like a floating block of mouldy cheese.... it's a giant Dalmatian humping the Old OCAD with a big red dick.

You see? Real art allows for interpretation.

I give it a 9/10 (looses a point for the compromised cladding)

I'd prefer a much larger version 700 feet high, with better cladding on the Toronto waterfront's east end (near the mouth of the Don River).

Sound.

Wish they had gone with the original cladding. If memory serves me, the exterior surface was supposed to be have the capability of projecting design projects of OCAD students to the city below. This high tech lighting facade was ditched because of budget constraints.

I think there is something very right about architecture that makes people violently love it or hate it, especially for a school of Art! They could have played it safe, but chose not to. I give it a solid 10.

9. for being innovative. It's a design institute, therefore it had to think out of the box!

I agree. This building evokes very strong opinions one way or the other. I love it. Boring, it is not.
