The "House of the Cultures of the World" was the American contribution to
the International Construction Exhibition of 1957. The architects were Hugh
A. Stubbins in collaboration with Werner Düttmann and Franz Mocken. It was
declared a present of the USA to the city of West-Berlin and used as a
congress hall.
From a technical and artistic point of view, it really set standards at that
time.
In 1980 parts of the elegantly swung roof collapsed, as rust had weaken the
construction. Until 1987, the city's 750th jubilee, it was reconstructed into
its original appearance and today serves as an event location.
Berliners call it "Pregnant Oyster".
