There is a proliferation of spacious gas station plazas of SHELL/PETRON/CALTEX etc. on SLEX and NLEX(?) of which along with the gas station are convenience stores , fastfood outlets , cafes and even restos are present. Which in particular are your favorites to dtive thru for a load of gasoline or even shop or dine ? and why so?

anyways, i like the Petron Stations in NLEX. northbound or southbound, they have heaps of fast-food joints which suit my taste :)

i don't go in long-distance travel in SLEX. just up to Sucat and Alabang nowadays

renell
September 4th, 2004, 11:49 AM
i doubt there is, given the lack of trust between customers and the retailers in MM. ;)

yeah..i've been to these gas stations/rest stops. They are really cool...makes me feel like im in the states, some of them are even better!

In NLEX:

Petron has Pizza Hut, Jollibee, Gloria Jean Coffee, etc...
Shell has Starbucks, KFC, Burger King, etc...
And i think Caltex has McDonalds.

Kiel
September 4th, 2004, 03:10 PM
In this caltex it has mcdonalds, hen lin, pancake house, and starbucks too.

all of the stations I've seen have starbucks opened. :) (Petron, Caltex, and Shell)

i see, m stil hopin we could finaly hav our 1st ever self service station in d country hehe....maybe the retailers can experiment that near or w/in the makti/ortigas cbd, but those office workers might dont wana get a bit dirty...

the new caltex is just in front of the petron slex near the manila southwoods exit, i also noticed gas statiuons in slex r usualy much bigger than in nlex. pero i find one thing all of them lack, lodging services... some travellers who might be very tired & exhausted can check -in 4 even just a few hours to take a nap or what ever pero puro fastfood naman yung extra services ng gas stations, sana merong lodge or microtel suites din kahit papano...

ronnaveth
September 5th, 2004, 05:53 AM
it's a bit not practical to have a microtel at our slex and nlex because it's such a short time travel unlike interstate highway in the states....it would only take less than a day to reach the farthest destination---say, from manila to baguio----so, why would people even bother to take a lodge if they can reach their destination in less than a day

There were actually several self-service gas stations in Manila during the late 80s to early 90s, this included the Shell station in Magallanes (which is where we'd always gas up back then, the food you could buy in their shop was always interesting imported stuff, they even had Twinkies). I'm surprised nobody else remembers this. I guess self-service didn't catch on. Labor costs are really cheap here naman so I don't think it's really necessary yet. Besides, Filipinos like being waited on.

The huge Caltex and Shell stations in San Pedro Laguna along SLEX are really close to where my parents live so we're trying to figure out how to get to them without having to exit to the highway. :-)

bagel
September 6th, 2004, 10:29 PM
Self-serve in RP? I remember. In the 80s... We used to think "Feeling Stateside tayo ngayon! Let's fill up ourselves!" The one I remember was a Shell station on Sucat Rd, between SLEX and Loyola Memorial Park, back when the road was less crowded. I remember how spacious it was and how well-lit it was and how my friends and I competed to press the buttons on the pumps. I also remember how excited I was to squeegee our own windshield! This was also the time when KFC was called Kentucky Fried Chicken and you can get legitimate biscuits with gravy there-- none of this chicken and rice weirdness.

But it really doesn't make sense. As Jude said, labor is so cheap here and Filipinos are used to having people do menial tasks for them.

I remember... back late 90's (good old college days)... during the bulk of the construction of the skyway, we always stopover there at Shell Magallanes to eat and let the traffic "dissipate" itself... we kind of made it a habit of stopping over there... maybe that's why the name of the store there (before they changed it to Select) was "Bad Habit"

What do you guys think is better (gasoline quality + service), Petron, Caltex, Shell or other?

we find Petron the best!

as much as possible, we try to fill-up with XCS... on long haul journeys, Blaze.

(our engine seems to have this weird reaction to Caltex Gold lately... quality issues?... also, Shell Velocity's high price for a 95+ octane rating seems unjustifiable... it was 96+ before.)

btw, they're building a Petron station at the northbound stretch of the STAR tollway (near Lipa City interchange, just after the Pusil overpass)

Am really surprised at our fuel grades here in Manila... in the US, when I fill up my tank, i see octane grades at 89+ only! But despite our high fuel grades here, polluted pa din... why?

amras

kasi most of the vehicles are dirty.. especially the jeepneys... and also due to lack of trees along major roads, nothing absorbs the pollution. plus the volume of vehicles is too much.

Re: the fuel grades, one reason why you may be surprised is because the rating system for rating octane in fuel is possibly different in the Philippines and in the US. The gas filler door on my car has a table on it that says that my car requires 91 octane or above (US) and 95 octane or above (Eur). My conclusion was that they just have a different equation for calculating octane in the US. For what it's worth, in California, the max octane you can get at gas stations is 91 octane. Back east in NJ, I remember seeing 93 and even 94.

I dunno about that...but Total just opened its largest gas station in Asia on Northbound SLEX.

Total opens its biggest Asian station on SLEX
New oil player Total Philippines Corporation yesterday opened its largest service station in Asia along the northbound lane of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).

Total South, which costs P150 million, boasts of French Mediterranean architecture on a 2.1-hectare land located in Santa Rosa, Laguna at the northbound lane of the SLEx.

"It is Total's expression of confidence in the Philippine market," Total President and Managing Director Jeff Attwood said.

Total Philippines is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Total, the fourth largest oil and gas firm in the world.

Total Senior Vice-President for Refining and Marketing Asia Gary Jones cited the efforts of its Philippine subsidiary in building the firm's global brand in the country and creating high visibility in the energy sector.

Mr. Jones also assured Total's confidence in the Philippine market and of its continued presence in the country through its operations and investments. In the past, only the Big 3 oil companies composed of Petron Corp., Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., and Caltex Philippines, Inc., had the option to put up service facilities along the SLEx, Total said. As the highlight of the grand opening, Energy Sec. Vincent S. Perez, Jr., for his part, lauded Total for its continued commitment in building a sustainable energy sector in the country.

Total South operates 24 hours and currently has six locators from among the top food companies in the country including Seattle's Best Coffee, Chowking, Greenwich, Jollibee, Sakon Thai Noodle Express and Fruitas.

Soon to open are Via Mare, Rose and Grace of Batangas, followed by KFC. It also has ŒBonjour,' a one-stop convenience store that builds on the concept of convenience travel.

In addition, the station has a children's playground and activity corner, business and first-aid centers and air-conditioned restrooms. "We have built the biggest station in the whole of the Asian network of Total," said Total Vice-President for Retail Anna Whitehouse. -- B. S. Sto. Domingo

I know why the demolished it. There's a bigger newer Caltex station. It's one of three new megastations on the northbound lane of the SLEX (These include the total listed above, and a shell). I had lunch in the Caltex (or was it the shell one, kinda pathetic that they're so generic) on thur.

You are probably right , that demolished one is one of the earliest gas station built there and its not a mega-gas station ( no restos , conv. stores ) its not advisable to maintain it competing with other megastations .

It's kind of weird too because if you think about it, rest areas in the US exist every 50 or so miles if they even have them. But the distance from Nichols toll plaza to the end isn't that long. And yet there are several of these service areas along the length of SLEX. I guess this is one area where the Philippines has the US beat. Either that or Filipinos have short attention spans and lose patience much more quickly on the road than Americans. Or the traffic is so bad that you need many of these stops to bide the time. Anyway, thanks for the pics.

There's Cinnabon there now? LOL. These stations/stops are nice, and it's like those in Canada (and the USA) in more outside highway routes so that drivers can stop somewhere. Actually this stop looks better than most of the stops in Canada. Very modern and stylish with more features. But I don't like how there's too many american things. They need to keep it Filipino. This goes for any country. They have to have their own businesses going and own identity. Anyways, these pictures of gas station/food stops look like it's in Miami, mainly due to the climate.

Yup, I've patronized that Figaro at the Baywalk several times. It's very popular, some of the longest lines I've seen at any Figaro. It's right next to the platform where they have the performing mimes.

Yeah, that's what most non-Filipino forumers say, especially on the guess-the-city threads with our Gasoline Stations as the clue pictures.

BUMP!

I personally love the Shell Plaza below the ever-eye candy Nancy Castiglione So-En billboard after the Susana Heights Exit on the Southbound portion of SLEX. It almost has everything!

I'd also like to mention the Shell Plaza after the Mamplasan Exit of SLEX, on the Northbound portion

Total to spend P250 million
for 30 new gas stations this year

By Paul Anthony A. Isla
Reporter

TOTAL Philippines Corp. (TPC), a unit of the world’s fourth-largest oil and gas company, has allocated P250 million for the expansion of its retail network this year, marking its decade-long of operations in the country.

In a press conference, TPC president and managing director Anna Whitehouse said her company will open at least 16 gasoline stations and 15 Auto LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) facilities within the year.

“We have earmarked P250M for the development of new stations, Whitehouse said. “Currently, Total has a network of 98 gasoline stations and 8 Auto LPG stations, the majority of which are located in Luzon.”

“We are marking our 10th anniversary this year, and we look forward to celebrating the opening of our 100th station soon,” Whitehouse said. “We have also scheduled the upgrading of a number of stations and convenience stores this year.”

She added that they are also bullish on the contribution they can make in the auto LPG industry in addition to the full support they will give to the government on the Biofuels Act of 2006.

“Auto LPG appeals to the gasoline motorist, especially those who travel a lot, because it is a cleaner and substantially cheaper fuel to gasoline,” she said.

Whitehouse said auto LPG is now offered in four Total service stations. At least 10 more sites will open this year.

The company, according to Whitehouse, has also tied up with auto LPG conversion kit providers and operates four independent Auto LPG stations. Total also supplies Auto LPG for independent oil companies and taxi fleets.

In addition, Total has especially formulated lubricants for vehicles that run on Auto LPG. Total Quartz Auto LPG 20W50 high-performance motor oil is designed to protect the engine and help maintain its performance.

Whitehouse said that they are also looking into Auto LPG for the tricycle market, considering the more than 1.3 million tricycles nationwide, which mostly emit noxious hydrocarbons.

“By converting to Auto LPG, tricycles can reduce emissions by at least 75 percent, Whitehouse said. “We are currently working with the Department of Energy in developing policies and standards for Auto LPG for tricycles.”
