This is a new bridge to begin construction next year. The Komarna-Peljesac Bridge is over 2.2 km long and will make efficient travel on the Croatian coastline, saving people the need to pass periodicaly through Bosnia to continue their travels towards Dubrovnik.

On the 21st November 1991, one of Croatia's most important bridges, the "Maslenica Bridge" near the port city of Zadar was repeatedly bombed by Serbian forces which sent it crashing into the waters of the Novsko Gulf to which the former bridge crossed for decades. The bridge was completely whipped out and today most of it still sits at the bottom of the sea.
Years later the steel bridge was replaced by a new concrete bridge slightly further up from the old bridge. In the interim, a pontoon bridge was used for short term measure.
Last year works resumed on a replacement bridge on the exact location of the old one. The reason for this was that the new concrete bridge now forms part of the Zagreb - Split motorway and in order to cater to the needs of local traffic, the old "Maslenica Bridge" needed to be rebuilt.
Here are some images of the "New-Old Maslenica Bridge" nearing completion and images of the "New Maslenica Motorway Bridge" and also ones of the former bridge.

long foot, how is the construction of the Zagreb-Split motorway going?
When is it suposed to open(the entire motorway)?
What about the Zagreb-Rijeka?
In 2003 i have gone from Maribor(Slovenia) to Zagreb, and then to Rijeka, but only used short sections of motorway, because most of it wasn't built yet.
Hope you build that fast! ;)
Oh, and a Split-Dubrovnik motorway would be great too! That road is really twisted! :dizzy:
But dubrovnik is well worth the journey! :)

Hello Nephasto,
The Zagreb - Split motorway is now finished. So is the Zagreb - Rijeka motorway.
This year they will begin Split to Ploce section of the Split - Dubrovnik motorway. This segment will cover half the distance to Dubrovnik and is expected to be completed before 2008.
Most of Croatia's motorways are now complete with some work on linking in between the Zagreb - Rijeka and Zagreb - Split motorways, which means a Rijeka to Split motorway.

Great news to hear that the Zagred-Split motorway is already built! :D
As for the map, i must say tht not all those green lines are really motorways... maybe more then regular roads, but not motorways.
The ones i'm talking about are those west of Vrbovsko (near Rijeka).
I've traveled on those green lines west of Rijeka and they are good roads and may even have blue(i think) coloured signaling (like motorways), but are just good 2 lanes roads. Maybe they will be upgraded to motorways in the future.
As for what really is a motorway, I trust in www.viamichelin.com. ;) And also in my personal experience in this case.
Well, as for the other ones, they are motorways, and i must say that croatian has a quite good network of motorways! :D
How will the motorway Split-Dubrovnik cross Bosnia after Ploce? Is it going to be built in bosnian territory, or is there going to be a bridge to the Peljesac peninsula or to be all in croatia, as i've heard? This would be cool! ;)
PS: Are you croatian AstroBoy? If so, may i ask were from?
Greeting from a croatia's fan! :)

You are right, Nephasto, there are some sections between Rijeka and Vrbovsko (some 30 km) which are not real motorways, but some kind of fast roads. Rest of this network on the map are real motorways. But they are going to rebuild these sections in couple of years, so it will be full motorway.
Motorway Split-Dubrovnik will cross Bosnian border near towm Neum, but it will have one more direction to Pelješac peninsula. I am not sure when construction of this bridge will start, I guess this or next year. However, construction of motorway Split-Dubrovnik will start in 2005.
It is unbelieveble, but we have one of the best motorways network in Europe (per capita). They costed a lot of money, but it was nesesery because our country has a strange form. We have many tourists from western and central Europe and these motorways were "sine qua non".

The Maslenica bridge (1961) which once lay north of the city of Zadar and destroyed completely in the last war (1991) has now been completely rebuilt and will open this weekend for traffic :)
It was built to original design with the except of some more modern engineering methods.
Length: 315 metres
Height: 55 metres
Width: 10.5 metres
Weight: 1400 tonnes
Build: Single span steel bridge
Cost: 50 million HR Kunas
One interesting thing was that the Maslenica bridge was delayed by over 6 months, mainly by over 100 days of the infamous "Bura" winds which hound coastal Croatian with freezing winds that exceed speeds of over 200 km/h :eek2:

So far a number of studies are nearing completion and the bridge has been given the "green light" by the government. So far there is no website of the project but its expected more news later this year. The bridge will become biggest bridge in Croatia at a lenghth of 2.3 kms. It will be about 25 metres above water. This is a render from a news article the past weekend which one of our members came across. :)

Its all about real estate. The Peljesac peninsula will now be opened up instead of being some long backwater. The next best thing is that another bridge is also planned. A lot shorter which will cross over from Peljesac Peninsula over to Korcula island which will also connect another large chunk to the mainland with great infrastructure. In a similar way Krk Island was opened up.
The government needs to give these projects priority as it will revive the isolated coastal towns and islands. I smell a big real estate boom in Croatia and a big population increase as a result of this.

sorry sincity for quoting somethine like 9 months old, but how in gods name will this bridge be able to be part of the Split-Dubrovnik motorway? This bridge is only 2 lanes wide!
unless they want to build an identical-looking bridge right next to it (kinda like the new bay bridge UC in SF right now lol), they're most likely gonna build one of those motorways-on-stilts that will stradle the steep mountains further east from here. kinda like the Alpine motorways in Austria and Italy.

^^ Dont start me on the Korculani. There are more of them here in Sydney than on the island of Korcula itself. :D
Anyway, i dont think the Dubrovnik bridge forms part of the new motorway. The same thing happened in Zadar. There are now 2 new Maslenica Bridges over the gulf. One for the motorway (4 lanes) and the rebuilt one destroyed in the war which is for local traffic and is less than 100m away from the motorway one. the rebuilt one is only double lanes if I remember.

please, don't qutoe 10 pics just to put smiley!
about Dubrovnik bridge: it is not going to be a part of motorway! motorway shall finish north from dubrovnik, in Osojnik. and it has 2 names: Dubrovnik bridge and Franjo Tudjman bridge (because some people wanted first name, some wanted second, so they have both).
about Pelješac bridge: the project is great, buit BIH government is making troubles because they say that our bridge shall close their acces to see. Non sense. Bridge is high ebough for ships, but large ships anyway cannot even enter to that bay because it is too shallow. I'd say they afe jelaous on croatian superb road projects.
About Krk bridge - I've noticed that some people say Krka bridge, but it is different. Krk bridge is this one with 2 arcs, Krka is new bridge on A1 motorway above city Skradin!
here are some my pics: first is allready mentioned bridge (in 1st post) in Slunj above river Korana. Second and third are not very good pictures of bridge above river Drava near Repaš. Interesting: the bridge doesn't carry only the road, but also oil pipeway (you can see it).

I say the BiH government has nothing to whine about, I stayed at Neum over February this year, great views, relaxed seaside resort type of town BUT there are hardly any ships in the first place at NEUM in the first place, just tiny little boats!!!! Why is all this "hoo haa" being made?
OettingerCroat
November 19th, 2005, 06:08 AM
^^ theyre bitching because the only coastal tourism they get (from croats and other western europeans such as osterreichers/deutschlanders/italianos) will get nullified by the construction of this bridge.
The only reason Neum even exists is because of foreigners buying chips/drinks and filling up with gas as they drive south to Dubrovnik. its just an intrusive, benign tumor, being fed by the artery that is the way to Dubrovnik.

Most people in Bosnia dont care for Croatia's new bridge because most dont care to visit Neum. Its merely a handful of politicians in Bosnia trying to kick up a stink at Croatia's expense by using the new bridge as some sort of political leverage. This is such a pity because it may lead to poor relations between the 2 countries.
Bosnia's coastline is only 20kms short. It doesnt sit on open seas as its blocked in by Croatian mainland on both sides. Neum has never been a port and its very shallow. It would take huge resources to make it deep enough for some sort of cargo ships to dock. Its also closed off by Croatian waters.
This bridge is important to the territorial continuity of Croatia without having to pass through a neighbouring country, which if Bosnia wanted to, could close off all road traffic with ease towards southern Croatia.
The new bridge meets all standards for access as outlined by international law.

I've made an entry on Wikipedia on the bridge: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelješac_bridge
As I'm not a Croat I don't know very much about all these Peljesac bridge issues (can't read Croatian)... Maybe a Croat could add some more info there?
Also copyright free images are very welcome on Wikipedia :)
