A federal spending measure with $316 million for 34 Downtown projects passed the U.S. Senate Nov. 20. The bill sets funds aside for Downtown infrastructure, transportation and facilities for job training, education and health. The new federal courthouse at First Street and Broadway received $311.4 million; the restoration of an historic mural at El Pueblo received $124,000; the expansion of the neonatal intensive, cardiac and emergency care facilities at White Memorial Center will get $1.5 million; the creation of a program to educate workers in the fashion industry $49,000; and the restoration of the historic Angels Flight railway $198,000. President George W. Bush is expected to sign the bill this week. The bill was introduced by Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, whose district includes Downtown.
