If there was a Milwaukee Thread Hall of Fame this thread should be entered in as the first entry. No doubt about that, even though City God has put together some absolutely awesome threads along with our long lost friend, MrMnn. This thread captures the spirit and the very essence of Milwaukee more than any other that I have seen so far, and it doesn't even picture the Mitchell.
Can we get over it now? LOL, I'm just asking myself, how in the hell was this thread dug up? Someone had to go through alot of history in this forum to dig this one up....kind of scary if you ask me...but still a pleasant suprise because I'm with you MSPtoMKE, it's been a joy!!!

These pics should DEFINETLY be submitted to some Chamber of Commerce or whoever markets the image of Milwaukee to the rest of the country. Milwaukee suffers from an undeserved bad image. These pictures are not just chamber of commerce shots that don't represent the city--these shots are the Milwaukee we all know and love, true to the core!
The amazing thing about these shots is that they are not only real and not just chamber of commerce fluff, but they make Milwaukee look just as good if not better than chamber of commerce shots! Seriously theodore, you have to get in contact with someone or some organization, such as maybe the young professionals society or something, and at LEAST show them these shots. I know they would be interested.

45%? I'd say that's 40% more than what all other threads show of it's city.
This is your first post on these boards and you're not starting out very well. If you want to spout social or political view points than take it to the skybar or current events forums please, otherwise nobody here cares about how sad and confused you are. Although the photos themselves are quite nice, you would have to be extremely sheltered to say and believe that these are realistically comparable to Milwaukee. I mean, at least more than half of the population of Milwaukee is made up of blacks, latinos, asian and other ethnic populations. These photos are pretty, yes, but they don't accurately depict our city. You'd be a fool to believe otherwise.

The East Side is a large part of Milwaukee....one of the densest areas in the Midwest. Its a very diverse area...blacks, whites, Asians, Middle Eastern..etc. Downtown and the Third Ward are also very big areas--many parts of them tend to be more black and Hispanic. Yes, it tends to more of a white hangout, but isnt it the same with cool spots in NYC, L.A., Boston, Chicago, San Fran, Seattle..etc.?
The Southside has Historic Mitchell Street/National Ave/Ceaser Chavez....which is mainly a Hispanic area. The African Americans have Martin Luther King drive. Both are beautiful areas with intresting architecture and stores. The Hispanic neighborhoods are packed with great resturants and other Latino owned businesses.
Here are some pics...taken by some of the guys on SSP.

Yes there is much diversity on the East Side but it isn't a microcosm of Milwaikee as a whole. In fact Milwaukee is very segregated. I believe you pointed that out saying that the South Side is a Latino area and Martin Luther King drive is an African American area. But if you really walked around the city as much as I have, and I doubt you have, (I walk to UWM and Wauwatosa occassionaly from the South Side where I have lived for 25 years) than I'm sure you would see that Martin Luther King Drive isn't the only place where African American hang out and live. Also, aou forgot to mention that West Allis, and West Milwaukee and a few others are mostly caucasian areas. The point is is that the photos that were origainally shown weren't representative of the city of Milwaukee. That is what I was saying. I don't know if you are trying to refute my notion or agree. But, yes you are stating all truths about parts of the city and what groups tend to live in them.
The link that you provided, however, does show a greater variety of people and places of the city, although still not near enough.

The photos that were shown were represenative of a very large and thriving part of the city. Everyone knows that Milwaukee is very segregated, it's a topic brought up on the forums quite often.
We all know (including Redd) that African Americans don't only hang out on MLK, you don't have to walk from the Southside to catch on to that one.

Yes, exactly. They are representative of a "thriving part of the city." But not the largest. The Uwm area does have more diversity than most of the city but only because the students all live very close together. As far as any neighborhoods north, north-west of UWM and outside of Shorewood, White fish bay, and Wauwatosa, of those neighborhoods, how many do you hang out in and know where the locals hang-out? You only know theEast Side. I could name a couple places that you would probably really enjoy on the South Side. Don't act like the East
Side is representative of all of Milwaukee. Ask me to prove you wrong and I will, with straight facts from accredited sources. In fact heres a fact for you" guess how many minorities attend UWM? Ask me, please. Here's a little taste of that answer: only 2,000 people from Milwaukee that are black, hspanic asian etc are students at UWM. Go take a "walk" to lake drive which is not more than 8 blocks from UWM you can tell the difference. Look I have lived here my whole life. I have seen the segregated neighborhoods. You are trying to portray me as though I'm trying to be a pompous know-it-all when only my point is is that our city (as acool as it can be) needs much improvement.
D-res
October 8th, 2005, 11:06 AM
if you've lived here your whole life you wouldnt be parading around ranting about how much this city needs to improve. i've lived in milwaukee for about a month and a half and i can already tell a huge difference since i've moved in on how much this city has changed and continues to do so. milwaukee needs improvement because it was such a "dirty" industrial city not that far back but recently its been doing all it can to drop that stereotype and show the world that its a hip town with a lot to offer anyone with any kind of interest.
when i joined these forums i had recently taken a trip to charlotte, NC and i came in here bashing milwaukee. mind you this was before i moved in and before i started slutting up these boards. i had an outside perspective and a lot of my views were based off of what i would hear from peers but after being such a regular here and moving to milwaukee and biking all around the city i've grown to love it more than i thought i ever would and im typically the guy standing up for it whenever i hear the slightest bit of discrespect.
as far as segregation goes, just because youve lived here all your life doesnt mean you know how much more segregated it is than anyone else here. hell i know how bad its segregated but again you're acting as if there hasnt been a change in decades when in reality its become a lot more diversified and cultured. as far as the east side being the "representative" of milwaukee, i can understand you disliking that notion being from the southside. whether its a good representation or not, it really is considered the 'representative' as far as i've learned from the outside public. i've talked to people about milwuakee from all over the country and for those people who have been here especially, they do bring up the segregation and how the east side seems to represent and lead the city, per se. of course this isnt true for everyones view and it may not even be a valid viewpoint but it does seem like thats the way people see things... dont take my words as criticism of any part of milwaukee and just because i live on the east side doesnt mean im biased. i love this city equally in all aspects. im just stating that from an outsiders viewpoint, atleast from those that i've talked to, thats what im hearing.
oh and for your statistics about UWM ethnical enrollment stufffff...
total enrollment: 25,440
White: 83%
Hispanic: 4%
Black / African-American: 7%
Asian / Pacific Islander: 5%
Native American: 1%

Hey, take a deep breath.
I'm not trying to portray you as anything. You're the one getting all hot-and-heavy over this discussion. I have seen the segregated neighborhoods too, I've seen it all my friend.
Do you know that UWM is at the very edge of the Eastside? As for the suburbs surrounding that area, let's not talk about them, they're 'burbs (and they don't deserve the attention :)). UWM is probably the LEAST diverse part of the Eastside. The area around campus if full of upper-class white kids living in overpriced houses their parents pay for. That's not diverse.
I live off Brady Street (on the Eastside), and I find it way more diverse than campus (where I lived for 2 years). It's so refreshing to walk down the street and see so many different faces and backgrounds, everyones got a story (and they're not afraid to tell you about it).
So are these pictures a postive representation of Milwaukee? My answer is YES.
WHY? These pictures are a positive reflection of the most diverse part of our city. An area that succesfully mixes ethnicities and backgrounds, creating a melting pot of culture. Why would that be a bad thing to take a picture of? Those photos do represent Milwaukee, they represent the most diverse part.
