Turkey's largest and most magnificent railway station, Haydarpasa was built in the early 20th century by the German architects Otto Ritter and Helmuth Cuno. A monument to the close Turkish-German relations of the time, the station is in neo-renaissance style and has a U-plan. The inauguration ceremony took place on 19 August 1908, just after the proclamation of the Second Constitution.
The façade is revested in textured sandstone, and the main façade overlooking Kadikoy Bay rests on a foundation of 1100 timber piles. The steep pitched roof is slated, and the interior is decorated with trailing foliage cartouches and garlands, and stained glass window. The ceiling of the circular room at the base of the southeast tower has ribbed vaults, and the upper landings have groin vaults. Flights of marble steps lead up from the quay to the monumental façade flanked by circular turrets with conical roofs, clock tower rising in the form of a crest at the centre, baroque decoration, balconies, moulded cornices, and pilasters.

When I first went there, I was awe-struck, I thought it was the most elegant and romantic train station ever, the surrounding could be bettered, with the industries and the busy and cold motorways nearby you can't see on the pictures, but I think these don't overwhelm you while physically being there, as you have the view to the water.
When you take the boat, or 'vapur' (which is a popular way to travel in Istanbul) especially at night, passing over this place (e.g. to Kadikoy and Karakoy if I remember well), from the deck outside, it looks just so beautiful, fragile and surreal.
Sometimes I think the architecture is out of place, and wish it was more Ottoman-like on the outside, but then, this building is a relique of German-Ottoman alliance. It's also the station used by Orient Express travellers who wished to head to Anatolia and further in Asia. Their last stop in Europe was the Sirkeci train station in Istanbul, and if they wished to travel further East, I imagine that, just like today, they could take the boat directly to Haydar Pasa train station, which is the first train station in Asia)
It's an iconic place, regularly featured in films and music clips. When I last was there, a film, set in the 1950's I suppose, was being shot btw.
