View Full Version : Why about Toledo?

Why dont you ever hear anything about Toledo, Ohio. It is metro area of nearly 700,000 with 300,000 people in Toledo proper.
I know Toledo has a very good hospital network, city-data.com lists 6 large hospitals in the city proper of 300,000 people. The crime rate is also low and the housing costs are very reasonable, I saw hundreds and hundreds of homes on realtor.com for less than 50,000 dollars.
It also with-in 40 miles of Detroit and 2 hours of Columbus and Cleveland.
Additionally, over 45,000 college students with-in 20 miles of Toledo. The University of Toledo has 16,000 students, Owens Community college has 7,800 students.
All and all, seems like a very decent place to me?

Seems like that, according to "denvernativeblahblah", everyone sucks except Denver and Colorado Springs! And they aren't even in the midwest, and don't try to put them there!

I would definatly like to see and hear more about Toledo. I saw some photos in the vs. section a few days ago, but it is probably mostly because nobody her is from there. It would be cool if a Detroit forumer had some pics they could post though....

To me Toledo is a "satellite" of Detroit in the same way Flint is one. In fact, I'm sure that it would be part of Detroit's CSA too if it was in Michigan instead of Ohio.
Toledo is actually 10 miles closer to Detroit than Flint is and nearly 5% of Lucas County workers commute into Southeast Michigan. While that isn't enough to be considered a part of the same MSA, I've seen CSAs where the commuting pattern between the combined MSAs is actually smaller.

Toledo is ok. I consider it as well, more related to Detroit metro. Also I have lived in Columbus and Toledo and it took me 2 hours to get to Toledo from Columbus via US 23 to Ohio SR 15 to I-75 north. A lot of Ohio and even friends that live there refer to it as the left arm pit of Ohio (Youngstown being the right arm pit respectively) I wouldnt consider it an armpit.
Honestly though Toledo has some awesome neighborhoods and a decent skyline.

This is just south next to I-75 south of the I-475 interchange.

I don't see why people contaminate one of the few threads actually considering Toledo with reasons why denvernative is this or that. I'd rather see the thread saved for what it's worth, because I for one would love to hear more about Toledo. How about putting Toledo in the spotlight here, not denvernative. I mean, this isn't the first time I've seen everyone openly comment on denvernative. So I just want to say, "We get it, ok?" Let the mods decide.
:2cents: I like the Seagate tower. Toledo's skyline is ok, but I don't think it would be that great without Seagate, IMO. But skylines don't define a city. I get the impression that Toledo is somewhat on the quiet side, but it seems to have held up against urban decay better than many cities, from what I can gather. I like the neighborhoods pictured at Urban Ohio. I'm also curious if someone in Detroit or even from Toledo is willing to gather some pictures. :)

Does anyone know if that new bridge over the Maumee River has been completed? I haven't been through Toledo in a while and last time I drove through there they had most of the supports up and were just starting to work on the decks. That was probably one of the most interesting drives having to weave through all of the supports and construction areas.

The Maumee crossing is STILL under construction. There was an accident with one of sections of the bridge and it fell and killed a few of the construction workers so that messed things up a bit.
Here is live web-cams of the bridge...

Toledo is actually known in chicago(because of I-90, I-80's Control City Eastbound), because Indiana dont put "Gary" or "South Bend" as its control cities.
That bridge looks nice especially for a city this small.

Toledo is a DUMP. If you have ever been there, you know this. It doesnt deserve threads at all. The downtown area is basically an accident. Skyline?? It has 1 or 2 buildings tall enough to be seen from the road, and they are probably 20 to 30 years old. The only things tall enough to be considered "skyscrapers" in the area are the many smelly factories that dot the landscape. If you like cold winters, depressing weather, smelly refineries, and Michigan, than Toledo is the place for you.
(by the way, my girlfriend lives there, so i go there all the time. she is standing right behind me and agrees with all of this)

That bridge is very nice. Very similar in look to the double span one being built in Charleston, SC.
"If you like cold winters, depressing weather, smelly refineries, and Michigan, than Toledo is the place for you." Don't Chicago, NYC, Detroit, Philadelphia and Boston all have cold weather? Seems to me they do pretty well despite it. I don't imagine you know the first thing about Michigan, but thanks for the generalizations. Have you noticed that Michigan is surrounded by beautiful Great Lakes? Michigan is not all heavy industry. Tourism is its #2 industry.

You are entitled to YOUR opinion but as far as saying it doesnt deserve a thread is not the case. Its a city to be discussed and commented on both good and bad. I can also assusre you that not everyone even residents of Toledo share your opinion and they in fact may view YOUR city as a dump and not the type of place they would live.

Even though they are only the burbs, you can still get a feel of the "flatness" of the area. Very different feeling than Upstate NY.

Yes, that is one thing I notice from driving from DC to Ann Arbor for school, it's flat as hell. Toledo is alright I've been there quite a bit and have a best friend that lives there.
It's a decent town, it has some nice architecture and history. The mudhens are good, Katie Holmes is from there, she looks pretty nice.
I guess the U of Toledo makes it a little funner, their football team does well in the MAC, but it doesn't seem like there is a whole lot to do there, seems kinda boring.

i think the entire metro area is something like 300,000. i mean the county i live in is more than twice that big alone
hudkina
March 17th, 2005, 08:18 PM
The MSA is actually at around 660,000. However, if you include the southern townships of Monroe County in Michigan then the population jumps by another 50,000.
Bedford TWP, in Monroe County, alone has a population over 30,000 and nearly 60% of that township's residents commute to the Toledo MSA. In fact, there are five townships and two cities in Monroe County that have the minimum required commuter rate to be included in the Toledo MSA. The only problem is that Monroe County splits itself between Detroit to the north and Toledo to the south. About 20% of the county commutes to Detroit while another 20% commutes to Toledo. About 51% works in Monroe County, 7% in Ann Arbor, 1% in Adrian, and the remaining 1% in various other areas of the country.

Only thing that makes Toledo look like a dump is YOU! Negativity is a strong emotion when people spew about something they don't know what they are talking about. I will not respond to such ignorant statement when the person only talks about weather, smell & old buildings. So much for intelligence.

haha. i have ever right to talk about Toledo because i have been there many times, and have seen just about everything Toledo has to offer. maybe dump was too harsh of a word, but Toledo is a pretty dead city. now the suburbs probably are experiencing some growth, but i mean what city's suburbs arent? My point is that the "urban" area of Toledo is trashy, and could use an overhaul. but i don't think that is going to happen frankly. Also, pretty much every single road needs to be repaved. I think Toledo's new nickname should be pot-hole city.

I was there in the very early 90s, just after Portside closed down, and the place was fairly dead. Good art museum, but one expects more....maybe things have improved since then...
The urbanistic thing that I did like about Toledo was that it actually had ethnic neighborhoods...that Polish area on Lagrange, and the Mexican barrio on Broadway, I think.....
...that those areas existed where positive features of the city.

Portside was taken over by COSi--a children's science museum, there is construction for a glass pavilion museum across from the Art Museum opening in mid-2006, new minor-league Mud Hens stadium, renovated historic opera Valentine's theatre, Erie Street Market with an outdoor Farmer's Market--with stores and restaurants, several big warehouses under construction in converting into lofts, new Fortune 500 world headquarters Owen Corning office on the bank of the river, The Docks a 5 different restaurant on the river bank with a view of the skyline, in planning stages of a downtown arena to replace the 57-year old rat trap--downtown has been undergoing a lot of positive change in the last 10 years.
