This is for me the most beautiful building in the world. And, I'm a member of the Antwerp Cathedral Choir ^^:

Antwerpen, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal:
(Antwerp, Cathedral of Our Lady)

View from the Belfry Tower, at the highest balcony. And no, I'm not one of these 4 guys, that are other choir members.

Keyboard of the carillon in the Belfry Tower.

Our choir :) I'm at the right side, before the column, the one that looks to the left side. And totally right, our director ^^

The height of the towers:
Belfry Tower (North Western Tower): 123m
South Western Tower: 65m
Onion Tower (above the altar): 48m

But this cathedral was planned to be much larger. The main corridor (sorry don't know the right name in English) had to be the euh, let's say the short line of the cross. There were also 7 towers planned.
As you see the South Western Tower has not been completed, this one had to be taller than the Belfry Tower.
The problem of course, was...
MONEY

The story goes that the (completed) north spire was built with donations from the poor, the (unfinished) south tower was paid by the rich merchants of the city.

I like antwerp, I had not seen that before.

Ulm is a gorgeous cathedral, and very cool/scary to walk to the top of. the spire walls are very thin and wispy towards the top!

one of my favorites (one of the ten largest in the world, in washington, dc of all places) is a cool fusion of modern simplicity and classic styles. (not classical in the greek sense, just classic church design)

Sevilla Cathedral is the biggest in the world!

Are you sure ? What about St Paul in London and St John the Divine in NY ?
(I know St Peter in Roma and Notre de Dame de la Paix in Yamoussoukro are basilicas)
Please could you give some figures ?

Spain has got more than 80 cathedrals.
Can you beat that?

Too easy !
In France, there are 92 cathedrals... Sorry ;)
I don't know figures in Italy, Germany or US...

Thanks for all the great pictures, folks! They're all beautiful, but each has a unique beauty that makes it REALLY hard for me to pick and choose...and I'll feel more confident to choose, at any rate, after I see more of the great cathedrals of Europe...I am SO looking forward to getting back to England, and going to France

BTW, those huge "scissor arches" in the crossing at Wells were put in to keep the crossing tower from collapsing; it's a tribute to the master mason who designed them that they also work so well aesthetically. Necessity is the mother of invention...:D

It's incredible to me that those Medieval Gothic marvels were built without modern technology (or mathematics!) ,:uh: and are still standing...

St Paul's

Built in the late 1600's on the orders of Charles II, it is the largest Protestant cathedral in the world and stands 111m tall.

The building survived the terrible devastation of the Blitz, while everything else around it burned.

St. Patrick's is lovely, isn't she, nestlling delcately among the towering 'scrapers?...Gothic does have a special knack for making stone look light and airy...One of the highlights of my recent trip to NYC!

greatest never built cathedral and what I believe would have been the most sublime in the world... marching easily past St Peter's, St Paul's, Rouen and Cologne. Lutyens' final masterpiece... unfortunately only the crypt was built and instead we got this pile of mediocrity:

http://jonathan.rawle.org/pg/liverpool/images/rc1.jpg

That's the catholic cathedral: the anglican one was built to plan and has its own qualities... though they are mainly only those of a rather heavy presence.

yes, the sevilla cathedral is the biggest cathedral (not basilica) ever build, but doesn't mean that is the best one.
For me, the best ones are Notre Dame de Chartres, Burgos, Notre Dame de Reims, Leon, Toledo, Milano and Ulm

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is the difference between a cathedral and a basilica?

Liz L
August 19th, 2005, 04:28 PM
A basilica is a FORM of church that began with the basilica, a type of Roman public building. It has a nave with a higher central aisle - the main vessel - and one or more lower aisles on each side, separated from the main nave by an arcade of piers or columns. The main vessel will have a tribune/triforium or gallery above the arcades, and a clerestory with windows above that.

The (most often) eastern end of the church, the farthest from the main entrance, which is where the choir and the altar are, is often separated from the nave by steps or a screen. But it will usually continue the same principle of high central vessel with gallery and clerestory surrounded by lower aisles;these aisles can swing right around the round eastern end of the church (the chevet).

If you look at the picture of St. Patricks (a basilica church) taken from the office window, you can see the lower, snow-covered roof of the side aisles at the bottom, underneath the windows of the clerestory, swinging around the chevet.

Laon is another basilica church; if you look at the cross section, you can see the tribune/triforium gallery above the side aisles, and the clerestory, where the highest butresses meet the walls, just below the roof. The elevation of the nave wall shows two sections between the arcade and the clerestory; I'm still a bit confused as to which is triforium, tribune, or gallery. Also note, from the ground plan, that Laon does not have a round chevet.

The basic plan has been much elaborated and modified over the centuries. For instance, side arms or transepts are often added to give the church the form of a cross, which you can see in both St. Patricks and Laon). But the key elements are still higher central vessel with arcades, tribune-gallery, and clerstory, and lower side aisles.

A cathedral (from Latin cathedra - throne or chair) is a church with a specific FUNCTION - it has a bishop's chair/throne in the choir; it's the archbishop or bishop's "home church", so to speak, where he presides at services, and the "mother church" of the diocese or archdiocese he administers.

Hope that helps, Nouvellecosse, without "snowing you under"...

From pictures I've seen, it looks like some of the stonework inside La Sagrada Familia might already be suffering from exposure to the weather, since the building isn't roofed in yet. Can anybody verify that for me?

If they keep on schedule, they'll be WAY ahead of St. John the Divine in New York, which is finally supposed to become St. John the Finished in 2050 or thereabouts, last I heard.... :D

St. Apostol Andreas , city of Patras , Peloponnese , GREECE

The two churches dedicated to Patras' patron Saint, St Andrew, constitute a national and Pan-Orthodox place of pilgrimage. The small Church was erected during the 1836-1843 period at the spot where Apostle Andrew died a martyr.
In the mid-4th century, on the initiative of Emperor Constantine, the Holy Relics was transferred to St Apostles' Church in Constantinople. When the Franks occupied the city, the Relics were transferred to Italy. On September 26th 1964, the Saint's Head returned to Patras by Pope Paul and after the actions that the citizens of Patras and the Orthodox Church took.

It is the one of the largest and most artistic church in the Balkans and one of the largest across Europe.
The Church's central dome is ~50m high and supports a five meter high gold-plated cross and twelve smaller ones, symbolising Jesus and his twelve disciples respectively. The church's capacity is 5.500 persons.

Amiens for me.

http://www.glasssteelandstone.com/BuildingDetail/643.php

The pinnacle of gothic religious architecture in France isn't in Pairs; it's in the town of Amiens. It was here in 1220 that the gothic style of architecture took planted its roots deep in the French soil. In 1218, it is likely that few saw the burning of the 1152 Amiens Cathedral as a good thing. But in a historical context, the timing couldn't have been better. The discoveries and ideals of gothic architecture were sweeping across Europe just as the people of Amiens needed to build a wonderful new structure. The interior features vaults which are ribbed, allowing them to soar to then-unprecedented heights while allowing more light to pour through the high windows. The external double row of flying buttresses expose the skeleton of the building, while providing additional space for pinnacles, and other ornamentation. From both inside and outside, everything is designed to soar -- to reach for higher goals, and bring the viewer and his religious experience closer to God. At the time of its completion, this was the tallest church in France.

The Cathedral of Notre-Dame is a textbook example of the gothic style. Shafts of stone appear deceptively delicate as they stack upon one another through the arcade, triforium, and clerestory. The cathedral has a main nave flanked on either side by an arcade, which supports the triforium and eventually the magnificent stained glass windows of the clerestory. As space converges at the top of each bay, an oculus window fills the gap and provides even more light and beauty.

While it's nice that the cathedral gives us so many reasons to adore it, that is one reason to despise it. The casual viewer or tourist can be overwhelmed by all the eye candy. Taking time to digest the visual delights doesn't help; it just leads to the intellectual equivalent of indigestion. When the cathedral was built, people spent more time in church and could absorb its magnificence over a long period. This was a cathedral built for them and their time. Unless you live in Amiens, chances are you will be rushed through its glory and leave either unsatisfied or overwhelmed by the experience -- irony for a piece of art created 700 years before music television.

> 1218 - The original cathedral on this site burns down.
> 1220 - Work begins on the current cathedral.
> 1236 - The nave and western facade are completed.
> 1238 - Work begins on the radiating chapels.
> 1240 - Work is suspended when money runs out.
> 1258 - Work resumes.
> 1269 - The choir is completed.
> 1290 - Construction begins on the side chapels.
> 1375 - Chapel construction is completed.
> 1366 - The south tower is completed.
> 1402 - The north tower is completed.
> 1981 - The Cathedral of Notre-Dame becomes a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
> The interior height of the nave in 143 feet/46 meters.

The pictures we've seen of Laon aren't very good, here are others.

http://www.orgel.com/laon.html

Like a Bach fugue, a Gothic cathedral demands all our emotional and intellectual powers . . . .

The exteriors of the Gothic cathedrals of the later twelfth and the early thirteenth century were in perfect harmony with the interiors - at least in the form in which they were planned; for hardly any were executed completely. Few visitors and even few students realize that. Laon is the only one (except for Tournai in Southern Belgium) that can give a true idea of what a French cathedral was intended to look like.

Built in the late 1600's on the orders of Charles II, it is the largest Protestant cathedral in the world and stands 111m tall.

While most of the big churches get all of the attention here, sometimes the smaller ones should get mentioned as well. St Paul's Chapel may not be anything special, and there are many churches that are bigger and widder that it is. However, it is the oldest surviving structure in Manhattan. I guess one of the reason it doesn't get a lot of metioning is b/c it usually stood in the shadow of the Twins. Speaking of those buildings, it was the only place in the area not to get touched by the debree on 9/11. This place also includes a small cemetery to early NYers like neighboring Trinity Church.

I cant believe the amount of images of the same thing some people post on these forums. It doesn't bother me as I've got a 4mb/s connection, but really, does nobody have respect anymore for those people still on 56k modem or people with slow computers?

Surely 3 or 4 pictures of one building is enough? I mean, you could post 3 or 4 of the best ones, and then links to the rest. This is overload sometimes. Never understood why the admin of this site allows more than 8 pictures per post to actually be made, because it's easily done in the forum setup console.

Some very very powerful and rich people own that church. It has a very interesting history.

Built in the 13° century it is one of the most beautiful cathedral in France, not well kwown because Coutance is a small city.
Typical of Norman architecture with a splendid 'Tour lanterne' in the center of the cathedral.

Well, it's time for me to post my favorite Cathedral that many of you might not even know. Since it is located on the far side of the world, in a nation that is predominantly Catholic, The Philippines, many of you might not even seen this Cathedral yet. Well, it's not very grandiose since we are not in EUROPE, HELLO? would you expect a Notre Dame de Chartres-style of Cathedral in ASIA? ANyways, it was first built somewhere in the 1570's and it has been rebuilt over and over again for over 7 times. The Spaniards built a grand one in the 1800's but it was bombed by the Americans in WWII since they though some Japs might have been hiding there.

Well anyway, here is it. This is the back portion
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/3083/421177097qe.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

This next picture below shows the bell tower, FYI, this cathedral is a reconstucted one built by the Vatican in 1957. It is located in Intramuros, Manila. Intramuros had 10 churches before including this cathedral, only one of them remained entirely intact.
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/2905/421177196vl.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Anyway, this is the Cathedral just right after the WWII Liberation of Manila where 100,000 souls lost their lives, this pic below is a grimy reminder of what war can do!
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/3685/1947cathedral5gi.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

This pic below shows the interiors of the Cathedral, rather bland compared to the ones in Europe but then again WE ARE IN ASIA!
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/8662/421177262uc.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Well, many might be skeptical if ever we Filipinos have got some nice churches to share, well, we have! This next pic is not the Manila Cathedral, rather the Iglesia de San Agustin, a UNESCO World HEritage Site, oldest in the Philippines. It's got a lovely interior!
http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/8420/sanagustin28qf.gif (http://imageshack.us)

Hope you liked my favorite Church and Cathedral, all photos, I got them from the Philippine sub-forum and it's my bad that I forgot to whom I should give credit to, so kung sino man siya, sana mapatawad niya ako!
