From the Evening Standard website: A multi-million pound shopping centre and office complex is to be built in the shadow of St Paul's Cathedral.

This isn't a 'shopping mall', it's a mixed-use scheme with retail, offices and a new public square, plus a publically-accessible roofscape with panoramic views. It is designed by Jean Neuvel for a site next to St. Paul's Cathedral. We submitted it for planning last week (so it is at least 3 months away from a decision).

It's the first in a whole series of new, large development schemes that will be submitted for planning in London over the next few months, all by leading international architects, including a few like Neuvel who have yet to build anything in London.

This looks very interesting. I have known about the White City Development for sometime, which involves the construction of 2 new underground stations. That project is currently under construction. I believe this development will bring a bit more life to the Square Mile and especially around St Pauls.

This is not a highrise project...Thus, I am moving it to the 'lowrise architecture' forum, where it should go.

You sound like you have some connection to this development, is that the case, or was it a mistype.

Do you have any information on the other schemes that will be submitted?

Liking the new development of the city though i am usually against the idea of these big schemes...not like it will hurt the vitality of the area lol!

Still not sure about White City - I like Shepherds Bush as it is and i think this mall could kill the place but at least they get new bus and tube stations i suppose.

the city really doesn't need things to be brought inside off the street, the problem with the city is it has a dead street life after 6pm and on weekends. They need residential.

^ This is true, but improving the shopping facilities in this area, would create a far more attractive residential environment.

It's a catch 22 situation. The City needs more residents, but residents require more facilities such as shopping than The City has to offer. Build the facilities, and the people will come.

can somebody show me what is there now and where it is??

The problem of adding new residents to the Square Mile is that you bring in the NIMBY and thus have harder troubles at pushing through legislation and most importantly: skyscrapers. The less people, the less chances of NIMBY's and the lower chance of skyscrapers being blocked by Square Mile 'locals'.

The best idea would be to build around in say Tower Hamlets and draw the people in then. The City of London Tram (which is proposed) could do this I believe.

This isn't one of mine, but I do work for the scheme's planning consultants. I have lots of info on the other schemes, but none I can share... sorry!

I think the exisiting building is much nicer than the pile of crap thats gonna replace it

Theres times when you have to admit that the newer building is superior the older one. Trust me some forumers on here know that im one of the first to deplore the destruction of older properties but in this case its a great thing. Look at the newer building for gods sake, roof gardens, and that central atrium wow . As long as it will be finished in context I wont mind.

The key aspect of the new proposal is that it opens up the site for the public. The view from the central atrium towards St. Paul's creates a totally new view of the Cathedral, and the rooftop spaces should be truly unique. I regret that the current building has to go too, because there aren't many others like it in the City and I'd like to see it refurbed, but I'd be happy with the new scheme. That part of the City has been downtrodden for a while now, and all of a sudden it has huge momentum with a cluster of redevelopment schemes. This is a key part of that, so it's an important scheme. Immediately to the left of this image will be this building, 150 Cheapside (demolition begun):

http://www.touchproperty.com/user.do?fieldName=File1&card=1&key=197&state=viewImage

Just further east along Cheapside will be One Wood Street:

http://www.touchproperty.com/user.do?fieldName=File1&card=1&key=202&state=viewImage

and finally adjacent to One New Change, between that and St. Mary-le-Bow Church, will be Bow Bells House:

http://www.mec.co.jp/e/group/news/release/image/20050214_1.jpg

None are particularly special buildings, but they're an improvement over what is there now and they'll collectively rejuvenate what is at the moment a fairly lacklustre part of the City, especially considering it contains 3 of the City's most treasured churches.

The White City development is only half a mile from my home.

A few months ago the first crane was put up on the site.

This is the view of it from my house.

http://www.geocities.com/honda_gyro_canopy/WhiteCityCrane01.jpg

Since then, at least ten cranes of this size have been added to the site.

I'll try and take some more photos and post then up on this website.

I would rather say LDN knows how to destroy the historic buildings very well.

I agree that the view will be great, but it's not worthy of demolishing a huge typical red-brick building.Modern malls can be built anytime, everywhere in the world.Old historic buildings are part of the city's character.

Yeah I'm not by convinced this either. Not that I like much of what Jean Nouvel does. He's pretty overrated IMO
