He was an ancient prophet in the Americas (300-400s AD) who buried the gold plates that later became the "Book of Mormon". He also appeared to Joseph Smith in 1823.

Whoa! Most of ´em are very beautiful buildings. Those "latter day saints" are also building a temple in my hometown (Espoo, Finland) at the moment. Should be finished in 2006. It´ll be quite modest compared to those american palaces though ;)

Just recently I found out that NYC does have a Mormon Temple, and it's in the Bronx at 554-58 Southern Blvd near 149th St, which was originally a theater.

Oh BTW, that is probably a church. The only mormon temple in New York City is across the street from Julliard.

Here is the information from the website (http://kraybill.home.mindspring.com/41/41theatres.html) the pic was from that prooves that it's a mormom temple.

"554-58 Southern Blvd. (above E. 149th St.). Opened 1926 as a small silent movie house, later enlarged to seat 1,800. Became Ace Theatre in 1940s. Now houses several retail stores, as well as a Mormon church."

Well a church is different from a temple, I'm sure there is tons of churches in New York City. Here is the website showing where Mormon Temples are in the New York area- it has good pictures-
