The two biggest malls that I know of are the West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, and the Mall of America in metro Minneapolis. West Ed reportedly has over 800 stores and services. I don't know any of MOA's stats.
West Ed has also boasted having the largest indoor lake, the largest indoor amusement park and the largest parking lot in the world. Don't know if these things are still true or not though.

It's under construction and it faces manila bay. they claim that it will be the biggest mall in asia (what's the point in making a nmae like that if it's not the biggest or whatever)

I think malling is something asians particularly Filipinos are more active at compared to the europeans or in the west. Just look at how many malls there are in the philippines.

Im almost positive that West Edmonton is the biggest Mall in the world.
BC's biggest and I think the biggest mall in the Pacific Northwest is MetroTown, over 470 stores and is directly connected to Skytrain. Many condo's, office towers. hotels and even a new Asian Mall have been built next to the mall Located at the centre of Greater Vancouver it is destination shopping.

how crowded do the malls get?
In Ayala Center in Makati, at least 600,000 shoppers visit in a day. :)

I suppose this could open a can of worms, not least on how to define the largest mall.
Number of Visitors?
Total amount traded?
No. of Shops?
Floorspace for trading?
Floorspace of mall?
Area of mall+car park?
Can't stand the places myself.

SIAMPARAGON
BANGKOK
Starry-eyed welcome for Paragon
Complex will boost tourists' spending
SUKANYA JITPLEECHEEP & SUJINTANA HEMTASILPA
http://www.bangkokpost.com/101205_B...c2005_biz37.php
Bangkok's business and social elite turned out in force yesterday to the launch of the 15-billion-baht Siam Paragon, the country's newest shopping mall.
Building began at the 52-rai plot in 2003, and the complex now features an opera house, an aquarium, cinemas and bowling lanes, as well as 250 retail boutiques featuring brands such as Hermes, Gucci and Chanel.
Several newcomers have also made their debut in the Thai market at Siam Paragon, including jewellers Van Cleef & Arpels and Mikimoto, and fashion brands such as Spain's Zara and Italy's Roberto Cavalli.
Siam Paragon boasts 500,000 square metres of space and is located in the heart of the city, flanked by the Siam Centre and CentralWorld malls.
The project was the brainchild of Supaluck Umpujh, aged 50, and Chadatip Chutrakul, 44, two female giants in the Thai retail industry.
Ms Supaluck, the vice-chairwoman of Siam Paragon, was the project innovator, while Mrs Chadatip, the chief executive, managed the project, keeping costs and schedules on target.
They say it was a perfect partnership to see through the challenge of a lifetime.
''I was taught by my father that to solve a problem, you have to experience it yourself,'' Mrs Chadatip said.
To prove this, her father, Gen Chalermchai Jaruwat, a former governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, came up with a unique way of teaching her how to swim _ he threw her in the pool.
Mrs Chadatip, who joined Siam Piwat, the operator of Siam Discovery and Siam Centre over a decade ago, agreed retail management had its own peculiar learning curve.
''Eventually, I was able to overcome all of the problems. It's not easy to succeed in this business. It's not just a question of selling space to tenants. You have to help them survive and prosper as well,'' she said.
Ms Supaluck was also taught how to compete by her father.
''To win the game, it's not enough to just walk or run to catch up with your competitors. You have to leap as far as possible. And to make a leap, you have to be the pioneer as well,'' Ms Supaluck said.
Ms Supaluck eight years ago gained new ground in the retail market with the opening of The Emporium complex, a luxury mall blending retail boutiques and entertainment.
She said she expected Siam Paragon to generate 10 billion baht in sales in its first year, with some 100,000 visitors expected each day.
Juthamas Siriwan, the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said she believed Siam Paragon would strengthen Bangkok's position as a regional shopping destination.
Tourists who had previously gone to Singapore or Hong Kong to shop would instead extend their stay in Thailand and take advantage of what Bangkok has to offer, she said.
Shopping done by overseas tourists is expected to account for 30% to 32% of total tourism revenue, estimated at up to 425 billion baht this year, up from 27% three years ago.

The main reason why some malls are so big is because developers put in too much RIDICULOUS extras inside the so-called mall. Some malls even descend to the mediocrity of being an AMUSEMENT PARK. Some malls in Manila specifically SM Megamall is more than 310,000 square meters PURE MALL as in PURE mall, shopping, no rollercoasters, skiing parks, residential buildings, just shopping!

There are 4 or 5 big ones in the UK about 130,000 - 150,000sqm (1.4-1.6m sqft). Nothing on the scale of that 900,000 sqm monster in Bangkok though!!
I try to avoid malls wherever possible, city centre shopping is so much more enjoyable imo.

The Galleria was developed by Gerald Hines in 1970. Modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, it originally had 600,000 ft² (56,000 m²) of retail space. The first expansion, called Galleria II and completed in 1976, added 360,000 ft² (33,000 m²) of retail space on two levels. Later added was the Galleria III (completed 1986), followed by the newest and biggest expansion (Galleria IV) completed in March 2003. This expansion added 2 department stores, a Nordstrom and flagship Foley's, as well as about 70 other stores, increasing the area to 2.4 million ft² (220,000 m²). Another 100,000 ft² (9,300 m²) of retail space, vacated by Lord & Taylor in 2005, is expected to be renovated by April 2006. Federated Department Stores plans to close the current Macy's store once its takeover of May Department Stores becomes final in 2006 and Foley's is renamed to Macy's. [1] A plan is being considered to convert the Macy's space into apartments.[2]
The Galleria is now the fifth-largest shopping complex in the United States, and considered to be one of the most prestigious malls in the country.Houston Galleria (http://www.pbase.com/ngruev/houstongalleria)
