The Museum is housed in the Galata, the oldest surviving building of those which once made up the Darsena Comunale (City Dockyard and Arsenal). The Museum extends over 10,000 square metres and 17 exhibition rooms making the Galata the largest Museum space of its type in the Mediterranean. The four floors of the Galata, built over the course of four centuries, have been restructured by the Spanish architect Guillermo Consuegra. In the past, these have housed a cannon foundry, a sail-loft, a military base and a goods depot.
The themes of the sea and navigation are a central part of Genoese identity and form a key element of the city’s year as European Capital of Culture. Using multimedia and interactive resources, the Museum will chart the evolution of the port and the city from the early Middle Ages to show what the sea has meant for Genoa over the centuries. The halls are divided accorded to historical eras and themes with the centrepiece being the authentic reconstruction of a 40 metre high seventeenth century Genoese galley. The galley was built by a Belgian shipyard company specialising in the reconstruction of historic boats.
