Came across this magnificant piece of architecture yesterday - a sludge incinerator based at the Crossness sewage works in Bexley, East London.

With a job like that, you'd expect it to look like some rectangular monument to brutalism, instead it's an impressive metallic marvel.

"Sludge Incinerator"... Love it!

I've never seen this gem before, probably because Crossness is a desolate headland in the Thames Estuary which you have to pass through Thamesmead to get to!

Cool building though :)

In the UK, we incinerate our sh*t, while in America they elect it.

any old pics of the old one. i did a uni assignment on londons sewers that bazalgette created. he built the first sewage pumping station at crossness.

during my research, i couldnt beleive the environmental impacts your ancestors were placing upon that river. i dunno about the thames today, but it would still be recovering wouldnt it??????

the thames is enormously clean today...maybe the cleanest major river of any city, well very clean anyway....all sorts of species of fish etc have returned.
