yeah, Putrajaya is indeed a great place for night photography. we were in a hurry that time (everyone haven't had dinner:D), so most of the pics i took was of that bridge.

As you can see from the northern tip, that part is Georgetown, the capital of Penang. It's a historical area and I believe there's no more space for a massive bridge construction there ;)

The new Sungai Prai Cable-Stay Bridge

The Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) was constructed to serve the metropolitan areas of Butterworth and Bukit Mertajam, which have seen a surge in vehicular traffic with intense industrial and urban development.

The ASEAN Bridge is located approximately 2km upstream of the New Miri Port Complex. The bridge and access road directly link Sarawak with Brunei across the Batang Baram via the existing Immigration Checkpoint at Sungai Tujuh.

The Batang Baram Bridge or ASEAN Bridge is the longest bridge in Miri Division, Sarawak, Malaysia. The bridge is located along Miri-Baram Highway. The official opening ceremony of the bridge was held on 30th August 2003

This a is really interesting photo to me. While it is obviously a fantastic bridge, it appears to cross the strait at a point that is twice as wide as if it were a few kilometres further north. Does anyone know why this spot was chosen for the crossing?
My best guesses are:

1. The narrowest point there is already connected by Ferry Service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penang_Ferry_Service);
2. We wouldn't want the (hundreds of) thousands of vehicles to enter directly into the city centre, would we? That'll spell disaster for Georgetown. :nuts:

Langkawi Sky Bridge
Langkawi sky-bridge is suspended at 700 metres above sea level. This unique curved pedestrian bridge spans 125 metres across a spectacular chasm. The view from the bridge is simply breathtaking. You'd be able to view the Andaman Sea and Thailand’s Tarutao Island as well.

The 1.8m-wide bridge had two 3.6m-wide triangular platforms that provided a spectacular viewing-cum-resting area for visitors.

since the using of bridge, the day of the ferries were over. together were the stalls by the river bank.

however, on one side of the river, there still remain some hawkers who continue with their business. thanks to the many motorists who just drop by for a drink, or buy something. at the same time, enjoy a view of the bridge.

Bridge piling works to be completed by March

BUTTERWORTH: Piling works for the expansion of the Penang Bridge will be completed by March next year.

UEM Builders managing director Datuk Ridza Abdoh Salleh said the piling works were progressing based on schedule and had not affected the bridge structure.

“We will not tolerate the safety of bridge users and the environment while undertaking the piling works.

“We want to allay any fears that the piling works are causing the bridge to sink.

“The tolerant level for any settlement to occur during piling works is not more than 5mm,” he told reporters at the company’s Hari Raya open house at SK Batu Kawan, near here, yesterday.

Ridza said work to build the casting yard for the second bridge in Kuala Sungai Tengah near Pulau Burung had also started.

He said about 80ha of land for the second bridge piling works had been cleared while load test to check and confirm soil condition had also been completed.

“All in, we have completed between 4% and 5% of work for the construction of the second bridge,” he added.

Ridza said the company projected that the construction cost for the RM4bil bridge would escalate due to rising costs of building materials and petrol and gas which were dictated by world economy.

He added that the company would work on the second bridge project within the budget.

Penang Bridge's Third Lane Ready By Aug 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- A third lane on the either side of the Penang Bridge is expected to be completed by August 2009, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu says.

He said the lane would probably be designated for heavy vehicles to overcome congestion on the bridge.

Speaking to reporters in Seri Kembangan today, he said that in the meantime, heavy vehicles would still be allowed to use the Penang Bridge even during peak periods.

Any plan to ban heavy vehicles from using the bridge would adversely affect business activities, he said. "After studying the proposal, we have decided to reject it and retain the existing rules," he said.

Congestion on the Penang Bridge would also be overcomed when the second bridge was completed, he said.

The preparation of sketches and drawings for the biggest bridge in Malaysia is well under way - a bridge project won by COWI.

Malaysia’s biggest bridge is now finally on its way to becoming a reality. It is COWI’s first bridge project in the country. The bridge over Sungai Johor has been underway for many years, the first steps having been taken as far back as 1997, but owing to the Asian currency crisis the project was brought to a halt.

Now, however, the construction company Ranhill has made serious inroads into what will be Malaysia’s biggest bridge, in about 2½ years, 20 km or so north of Singapore.


Three-phase project
The bridge project is divided into three phases. Basic design will be complete in mid-September, then follows a five-month period of detailed design, after which just under three years have been allocated for the actual building work, which Ranhill itself will take charge of.

”Throughout the construction period we will be available to lend assistance if it’s needed. And we always have the option of sending off one or two people who can monitor the project closely.” That’s the message from Lars Lundorf Nielsen, Project Manager at COWI.

Separate design and drawing production
The bridge will be a pilot project in terms of the working method adopted for the design.

”Normally we’re able to walk down the corridors in Copenhagen with sketches for the CAD people in our hands, but we’ve separated the design team from drawing production here. That means we have two project design sites, one here in Copenhagen and one in Kuala Lumpur, where they draw everything. So exchanging sketches and drawings is done electronically. We haven’t used this method to the same extent before,” Lars Lundorf Nielsen explains.


Need for close communication
A separate design team calls for close communication in order to prevent misunderstandings.

”Therefore, we have three Ranhill engineers located in Copenhagen for six months, acting as a linkage, so that we can make sure they get the drift of what we mean,” says Lars Lundorf Nielsen.

At the same time, an independent design company will be looking things over and letting us have their comments.


A trademark
COWI expects the project to open the door to other potential future projects.

”There’s quite a bit of growth in the area, and the bridge is a large project that has not gone unnoticed - not just in Malaysia but all over the Far East. So together with previous bridge projects on which we’ve been consultants in China and Hong Kong, we have a good reference list that others are looking at,” Lars Lundorf Nielsen tells us.


The Sungai Johor bridge is a cable-stayed bridge. Its total length is 1.9 km - with a main span of 500 metres. The bridge is being built with cables in the central plane, extending just under 1,000 metres. It is the first time a bridge is being built with a central cable plane over such a long span.

Ranhill, the client, will be operating the Sungai Johor Bridge for 30 years as a toll bridge. After that, the government will take over the bridge.

Muar Second Bridge or Jambatan Kedua Muar in the Malay language is a famous landmark in Muar, Johor, Malaysia. It crosses the Muar River.

History

Muar Second Bridge is built to overcome the traffic problems on Sultan Ismail Bridge. The idea of constructing the bridge was mooted in 1998. WHILE most Penangites go to sleep, work to widen the Penang Bridge is being carried out late into the night and early hours of the morning to avoid disrupting traffic flow.

About 500 workers, including local contractors, Indonesian and Bangladeshi labourers, are at the famous Penang landmark from midnight until 6am daily, working together to put up additional lanes on both sides of the bridge.

Stitching work to merge the outer lanes with additional new lanes started 10 days ago.

“Motorists using the bridge may not see the workers as they are mostly working under the bridge,” said UEM Builders Berhad project director K. Preamakanthan.

“We have also placed temporary fences on the guardrails to prevent motorists from being unduly distracted by the ongoing work while driving on the bridge.”

Under the RM585mil bridge-widening project, the existing island-bound and Prai-bound dual-carriageway lanes, each measuring 8m wide, will have an additional 4.8m wide lane each.

Preamakanthan said only 700mm from the 3.65m-wide outer lane would be temporarily closed when stitching works were being carried out.

“We chose to do the work at night to avoid clashing with the heavy traffic flow on the bridge during the day,” he said.

He said the nine lay-bys on the bridge would be moved outside the additional lanes while 2m-wide demarcations would be drawn along the new lanes for motorcycles.

Preamakanthan said since widening works started in November 2006, concrete piles had been driven into the land and marine areas of the bridge between the midspan and Prai.

Piling work for the remaining stretch between the midspan and Penang island, he said, would be completed by August.

“We have started stitching work on a 1.6km-long stretch on the Prai-bound lane. Here, concrete columns have been vertically placed in be-tween large pre-cast concrete boxes, called crossheads,” he said.

Preamakanthan said in between two standing columns, a pair of 40m-long ‘I’ and ‘U’ shaped beams had been placed horizontally to rest on the crossheads.

These beams, he said, were manufactured at the company’s pre-casting yard located near the new toll plaza.

“The I and U-shaped beams, which each weigh 80 tonnes and 140 tonnes respectively, are hoisted using a gantry and placed on a multi-axel trailer to be transported to the designated sites.

“Two 350-tonne launching cranes onboard a 76m-long barge are deployed to pick up the beams and place them in position on the crossheads,” he said.

Preamakanthan said that so far, a total of 80 I and U-shaped beams had been put in place at a rate of two beams per night.

He said the company hoped to complete the laying of all 288 I-shaped beams and 296 U-shaped beams by early January. Work began last December.

Concrete mix will later be poured over the steel bars in a formwork (mould) placed on the beams to create a cemented deck slab.

Preamakanthan: We chose to do the work at night to avoid clasing with the heavy traffic flow on the bridge during the day.

New concrete guardrails would also be built on the outer side of the new lane, he added.

“The old guardrails will then be hacked to expose some parts of its steel frames that would later be overlapped on the protruding steel frames from the inner side of the new deck slab.

“Concrete mix will then be poured over these steel bars that are placed in a 1.2m-wide formwork to stitch both the old and new lanes,” he said.

Preamakanthan said the process of hacking, steeling and concreting at each stretch between two columns took about 18 days to complete.

He said that based on the rate of progress on the works, he was confident that the overall widening project would be completed by the Aug 24, 2009 deadline.

The Sungai Prai Bridge is a new 1.4 mile link across the Prai River in mainland Penang. This beautiful cable-stayed bridge forms Package 1B of the BORR (Butterworth Outer Ring Road) Project.

Construction of the Sungai Prai Bridge faced a problem when improperly poured concrete slab atop a pile cap at one of the two primary stay-support piers threatened to weaken the entire structure, and attempts to remove the granite-hard blocks with conventional demolition equipment was unsuccessful. In the end, a decision was made to remove the concrete with explosives.
