MSRDC - Western Freeway Sea Link Project (http://www.msrdc.org/projects/wfslp.html)
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Western Freeway Sea LinkDuring the past two decades the existing western corridor stretching from Bandra to Cuffe Parade has become highly congested and the traffic levels having already reached saturation level need immediate solution. The construction of Bandra Worli Sea Link taken up by MSRDC is a partial solution to the problem and appreciable relief can be achieved if the sea link is further extended up to Nariman Point with a connector linking Cuffe Parade.
The proposed Western Freeway is a north - south sea link connecting the Worli end of Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) to Nariman Point with a dispersal link connecting Cuffe Parade. The alignment runs over major bridges keeping the shoreline at about 150 meters from Worli Hill and there after across the bay upto Nariman Point.
PROJECT LOCATION
The alignment starts at Worli Sealink at Worli end of Bandra-Worli Sealink, runs parrallel to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road shore line, the alignment then traverses Love Grove Outfall and Haji Ali Bay before running close to Priyadarshani Park and then skirts the Malabar Hill and enters the bay at Malabar Hill point to connect to the Netaji Subhash Chandra Road near NCPA, Nariman Point.
The alignment is to be provided with interchanges at Worli, Haji Ali, Bhulabhai Desai Road and a dispersal arm at Nariman Point for connecting to the Cuffe Parade by a bridge.
SALIENT FEATURES
It is estimated that an eight lane bridge from Worli to Haji interchange and six lane beyond Haji Ali to Nariman Point will be required.
Length of Bridge
Worli to Haji Ali interchange 4.05 kms
Haji Ali interchange to Nariman Point 8.28 kms
Nariman Point to Cuffe Parade 1.42 kms
Total 13.75 kms
Unique Designs for the bridges to emerge as landmark in the city.
Construction period will be around 4 years.
Corridor is a sea link and runs over viaducts and bridge structures.
Cable stayed Bridge/ Balanced Cantilever bridge at Navighat span in Haji Ali Bay / Marine Drive Bay and Cuffe Parade Bay.
Superstructure proposed with precast segmental match cast units over RCC substructures supported on large diameter piles or similar cost effective arrangement.
Interchange at terminal point of Bandra - Worli Sea Link.
Trumpet interchanges with connectors linking Haji Ali and Bhulabhai Desai Marg.
"T" Junction with interchange at NCPA, Nariman Point.
Modern Traffic Monitoring Control and surveillance system.
State - of - the - Art toll collection system proposed.
Alignment(You can see the red line on the south of the map).

So far the pictures we have seen are all at the Bandra end...which seems to have reached the point where we will have the cables taking over from the pillars. But what about the Worli end? There is no news about what is happening to the approach road at that end.
And are we planning on completing one carraigeway way before the other one to start getting the toll?

Is there some opposition to the project because the highway is being built on some beaches that border the Indian Ocean? They want people to relax and watch sunsets in a bridge in the summer season?

^No beach on the Arabian Sea is going to be taken for the project. The only opposition was from the the residents living in Worli. They filed public interest litigations to save their seaface from being taken up for the worli landing of the bridge. Other than that there was a funding issue but that has been resolved now.
Anyways, we are now looking at a Dec 2008 opening of the Bandra-Worli sealink. Before that the tendering process should hopefully start for the Worli-Haji Ali sealink

When you can't build a highway in town, just put it out a sea. You can still get stuff built in Asia, but this would never work in a million years in the US. Busan and Incheon also have gone out to sea with highways and bridges.

It's Amazing how scientifically designed well finished roads - with paved well defined edges and sidewalks (where relavent), well painted high visibility road markings and signposts can transform the aesthetics of any place...

Notice how just this one Sweeping line across the pic immediately makes the Mumbai coastline freeze frame look a lot more modern and sophisticated - giving the impression of a tidy city (wish it really were) from this view point.
If one looks at a Google earth snap of a western city and any Indian city the difference is most apparent...
In Indian cities the roads seem to fade away into the dust on the sides whereas in Western cities they are clearly demarcated...The transformation is slowly (sigh) happenning in India though...
