The people of Zaragoza had long been dreaming of holding a great event to commemorate the bicentenary of the Sieges of Zaragoza of 1808 and the centenary of the Spanish-French Exposition of 1908. Among others, the Cultural Association “The Sieges of Zaragoza” had circulated the idea years ago, but the proposal for an international exposition conceived as a project of global political consensus took form and came to the public eye during the local elections of 1999 at the hands of candidate Juan Alberto Belloch.

The Exposition will have the title "International Exposition Zaragoza Spain 2008: " Water and sustainable development " (Recognised Exposition Zaragoza Spain 2008). "Expo Zaragoza 2008" has been suggested as a shorter title.

The Exhibition will last for the three-month maximum period authorised by the BIE, between Saturday 14th of June and Saturday 14th of September 2008 . This period coincides with the summer when the days are long, and the nights can be enjoyed. The Exhibition also coincides with school and professional holidays , and with tourism in Spain at its peak, which should ensure a steady flow of visitors.

In summer the weather in Zaragoza is stable, hot and dry, ideal for open-air recreation and leisure activities. Summer festivities include the night of San Juan (24th of June), the Virgen del Carmen (16th of July), and the festivities of the 15th of August . Each of them will have a special theme included in the Exhibition: the encounter of water and fire, women in accordance with the third principle of the Statement of Dublín and finally, the 15th of August will inaugurate a long weekend dedicated to "water games", with the River Ebro as its setting

The Exhibition will be open for twelve uninterrupted hours every day , from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. which is when the Night Expo will begin. It will offer night-time activities and performances until 3 a.m.

2008 marks the centenary of the celebration of the Spanish-French Exposition Zaragoza 1908 . This in itself is a good reason for Zaragoza to host an international Exhibition again.

The people of Aragon immediately grasped this idea, and the Pro Expo Zaragoza 2008 Consortium was created in June 2000 - made up of the Government of Aragon , the Zaragoza City Council , the Regional Assembly of Aragón and the Zaragoza County Council . In December of the same year, the Spanish Embassy presented a Spanish Government Declaration of Intentions to organise the Exhibition to the BIE Assembly. The year 2003 was also important: in February, a National Commission was created for Zaragoza's bid; in August, an ambassador was appointed for the Special Mission for Expo Zaragoza 2008; and in December, the Zaragoza Expo 2008 Society, S.A. was created.

The bid for the Exhibition is based on firm principles and can be justified on a national, regional, and local level. Spain's level of development and stability , its consolidation as the second tourist world destination, and its experience in the organisation of large scale events, like the Olympic Games of Barcelona 92 and the Universal Exposition of Seville 92 are all good reasons for choosing Spain as the host country. Aragon's strategic geographical situation and its openness towards other regions make it an attractive option. Finally, the city of Zaragoza has an important place in the nation as a whole, it is situated in the centre of North eastern Spain, it has interesting projects (the High Speed train - AVE -, the PlaZA (http://www.plazadosmil.com) project), and it has experience as a host city for congresses (especially the International Water Fair - SMAGUA -).

Some of the main objectives of the Exposition are: to act as a meeting point for the participants, the institutions involved, and the public; to create awareness of water issues, and their relationship with sustainable development; to present the solutions, problems and good practices employed in different places of the world to the public; to encourage the institutional coordination of networks in order to advance in all fields; to spread the main international declarations about water and sustainable development; to help visitors understand the water cycle in full; to encourage technological diffusion...

The chosen theme, "Water and Sustainable Development", has vital importance now and for future generations. The Exhibition will be an opportunity for the participants and visitors to interchange ideas on their experiences, problems and solutions.

Water represents life in many forms. On one hand, it is a basic raw material and a source of energy. On the other, civilisations and cultures are founded on it and rivers unite people and regions. Above all it is a necessary and universal symbol. Concern for water is a recurring issue in several institutions: UNESCO declared 2003 the international year of fresh water; the United Nations has declared the period 2005-2015 the International Decade "Water for life". Other international institutions interested in water issues are the World Water Council , the IWRA and the International Water Association .
Sustainable development has been a constant concern since the publication of the report "Our Common Future" in 1987, and it has been the theme of important international summits such as the Earth Summit of Rio de Janeiro, in 1992, or the Johannesburg Summit in 2002.

Moreover, the theme is recurrent in exhibitions organised by the BIE, such as Aichi 2005 "Nature's Wisdom" or Shanghai 2010 "Better city, better life", and in the international conferences, that have followed the United Nations conference of 1972 in Stockholm.

Expo Zaragoza 2008, with the theme "Water and Sustainable Development", has the following subthemes :

a. Water landscapes
b. Water, source of civilisation
c. Water economy
d. The pleasures of water

Zaragoza will ask the participants to contribute to this new approach to water, from the point of view of sustainable development by sharing traditions, experiences, problems, solutions, good practices...

In addition to the participants' pavilions, where each country will exhibit its approach to water, there will be several thematic pavilions and meeting points. The Water Pavilion will be a thematic pavilion, located at the entrance of the Exposition site, which will create awareness of water as a resource. Current water issues will be presented there, and it will prepare visitors for the rest of the Exhibition. There will also be a special area for Non-Governmental Organisations where they will be able to exhibit their contributions. The Pavilion of Spain will be act as a complement to the Water Pavilion and will present the challenges of the future as a global challenge for humankind. The Water Tribune will also be on the Exposition site and will act as a world forum.

The pavilions of the participant countries will be thematic and each one will be dedicated to the different ecogeographic zones:

- Ice and snow
- Deserts, oases and steppes
- Prairies and savannas
- Temperate Forests
- Tropical Jungles
- High plains and mountains
- Great rivers and alluvial prairies
- Islands and Coasts

During the Exhibition, there will be thematic weeks which will bring together the most important subjects, debates, and temporary exhibitions under a principle theme. The creation of a manifesto, known as the Zaragoza Declaration will gather the conclusions of the debates, the contributions of countries and visitors, and the main contents of the Exhibition.

Zaragoza is Spain's fifth city in number of inhabitants (614.405), after Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville, and it is also the capital of the Ebro Valley , which is inland Spain's most dynamic and socio-economically influential area of activity. Located in a strategic point, at the same distance from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Bilbao, Zaragoza boasts excellent accessibility, designed to adapt to the increase in the number of local, national, and international visitors. Motorways and dual-carriageways join the cities of Madrid-Lisbon, Barcelona-France, Bilbao-Logroño-Pamplona-San Sebastián-France, Valencia-Teruel and Huesca. The high-speed train connects Zaragoza with Madrid-Seville, Barcelona and, in 2007, with France. High-speed trains will also connect Zaragoza with Huesca, Logroño and Pamplona. Zaragoza also has a high-capacity airport , located 8 kilometres away from the city.

The local, regional, and national governments have committed themselves to financing the main building and infrastructure projects, which will also benefit from the regional funds of the European Union (EU).

The layout of the third ring road or "Ronda del Rabal", planned as a completely urban avenue, will not only be a support to the Exhibition but will be a double gateway to the Exhibition site: one entrance will be from the left bank of the River Ebro, and the second entrance from the surroundings of the Delicias intermodal station (high-speed trains, conventional trains, and buses), less than 700 metres away. A system of shuttle buses will transport the visitors from the parking areas to the Exhibition gates.

Pedestrian access will be provided by thirty lines of urban and interurban buses which are already in service, and the two basic metro lines which have been designed. Moreover, the Expo site will be reached by cable-car and a river transport system (a dam will stabilise the water level of the River Ebro) which will operate along the 2.5 km stretch of the River Ebro in the city centre. There will be footpaths that connect the city and the Exhibition site along both banks of the River Ebro .

More than 2,000 years of history and six great civilisations (Iberian, Roman, Islamic, Jewish, Christian, and Contemporary) have left an interesting artistic heritage and a tourist appeal as their legacy. A considerable tourist infrastructure of hotel accommodation , cultural facilities and medical facilities, make Zaragoza more than suitable to host an International Exhibition .

Expo Zaragoza 2008 is a proposal of renewal, which is deeply integrated within the structure of the city itself. It also proposes an important innovation: it is an Exhibition where the theme, the site and the surroundings are in harmony in that the site and surroundings actually become an active part of the theme. The Exhibition site will be located on an integrated town planning development on the banks of a 140-hectare meander of the River Ebro. Thestrategic location of the Exhibition site on the banks of the River Ebro, less than two kilometres away from the city centre, is an attractive proposal that would make access easy for the local population of some 650,000 people.

The project is based on a unitary and global vision of the banks of the River Ebro. It aims to achieve the river's definitive integration within the city , and transform it into the "main street" of Zaragoza, with promenades and public spaces of more than 6 kilometres. The Expo Zaragoza 2008 project will thus work with two complementary urban projects: the building of the site of Expo 2008 on the Ranillas Meander and the Ebro Banks Project .

The whole site has water as a permanent reference: an innovative Footbridge-pavilion which will join both banks and will be the central thematic pavilion; a Water Tower, which will become the Exhibition's legacy, will channel water in a closed system on the site; amphitheatres integrated with the river; a river-side square for bars and restaurants; and the pier, lakes and water courses all over the site. Thus, the pavilions of the participating countries are provided with the possibility to use water for their proposals in an environment in line with the common theme.

A Congress Centre of considerable capacity will be built, where meetings, symposiums and debates on the Expo 2008 theme will be held, and where the press and business centres will be located.

The many themes related to water and sustainable development will be developed during Expo Zaragoza 2008, not only in the participants' and thematic pavilions, but also in meetings, seminars, exhibitions, and different cultural and leisure performances .

A cycle of lectures and seminars, "The Water Tribune ", will deal with the water-related challenges of humankind and formulas to meet these and achieve sustainable water management in line with the theme of the Exhibition. Academics, politicians, specialised technicians, NGOs, managers, and water users will all meet in Zaragoza to become involved in the debate, analysis, and diffusion of the search for solutions, as well as to make public and celebrate any achievements. The Water Tribune will hold two preparatory conferences in 2005 and 2007, and it will start three months before the official opening of the Exhibition, thus stimulating media attention and public debate on the Expo.

http://www.zaragozaexpo2008.es/es/img/nproyecto/figura9.jpg

An International Conference on Water and the Environment (September 2008) will end The Water Tribune cycle, and it will open the way for The Declaration of Zaragoza , a manifesto which will gather the conclusions of the debates and the contributions of countries and the members of the public, together with the Exhibition's contents.

During the celebration of Expo Zaragoza 2008, there will be Thematic Weeks , with debates, performances, temporary exhibitions, and shows. They will contribute towards keeping world attention focused on the Expo, will give more companies and institutions the chance to participate, and will involve the whole city of Zaragoza in the Exhibition. To ensure the maximum circulation of the material presented, there will be an exhibition space in Internet.

A complete program of cultural, leisure and entertainment activities will take place day and night , both in the pavilions and in the open spaces such as the amphitheatre, the river-side square, the small theatres and stands:

- Daily parades and light and sound shows on the river.

- An international festival of street entertainment: clowns, mime artists, acrobats, jugglers, comedians, musicians, and so on.

- Festivities of the 24 th of June , San Juan, night of fire and water; 16 th of July , el Carmen , woman and water; 15 th of August , the Virgin of August, water games.

- The participants' national festivities.

- Performances: music, theatre, folklore, and different activities, i.e., the National Day ceremonies.

There will be restaurants and shops on a concession basis all over the Exhibition site. Many participants will also have a restaurant serving typical food and a shop offering other items to visitors in their pavilions.

December 16th 2004 Zaragoza won the Internacional Exposition.

Meet Zaragoza City:

Zaragoza (frequently Saragossa in English; Latin Caesaraugusta) is the capital city of the autonomous region and former kingdom of Aragón in Spain, and is located on the river Ebro, and its tributaries the Huerva and Gállego, near the centre of the region, in a great valley with a variety of landscapes, ranging from desert (los Monegros) to thick forest, meadows and mountains.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6e/Zaragoza%2C_Spain_location.png/180px-Zaragoza%2C_Spain_location.png

According to data from Zaragoza council from 1 January 2004, the population of the city of Zaragoza was 641,581. The population of the metropolitan area was estimated in 2003 at 656,922 inhabitants, ranking as the fifth-largest urban area in Spain. The municipality is home to more than 50% of the Aragon population. The city is 199 metres above sea level, and constitutes a crossroads between Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Bilbao, all about 300 kilometres (200 miles) from Zaragoza.

Zaragoza is linked by legends to the beginnings of Christianity in Spain. According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared miraculously to Saint James the Great in the 1st century, standing on a pillar. This legend is commemorated by a famous Catholic basilica called Nuestra Señora del Pilar ("Our Lady of the Pillar").

The event is celebrated on October 12th which is a major fiesta in Zaragoza. Since it coincided in 1492 with the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, that day is also celebrated as El Día de la Hispanidad (Columbus Day, literally Hispanic Day) by Spanish-speaking people worldwide.
Near the basilica on the banks of the Ebro are located the city hall, the Lonja (old currency exchange), the cathedral or Seo de San Salvador, and the ruins of the Roman city wall.

Near this area is a tapas zone called El Tubo and a nightclub district called El Casco. Other nightclub districts are La Zona and El Royo. There is a clean and popular gay bath house called Nordic nearby.

Some distance from the center of the old city is an expansive Moorish castle/palace called the Aljafería, one of the northernmost important Moorish buildings in Spain and the setting selected by Verdi for his famous opera Il Trovatore (The Troubadour.) The Aragonese parliament currently sits in the building. The palace was the setting of Verdi's famous opera Il Trovatore.

Zaragoza is linked by Renfe's AVE high speed train service to Madrid and to Lérida in Catalonia.

Thank you thank you thank you very much for the information. I heard something about these projects in Zaragoza some time ago. It means that not all nice projects are centred in Madid, Barcelona, Valencia and North of Spain. If Zaragoza do what they say, it would be another thing made in Spain to be proud of.

This projects will make grow up Zaragoza as economic place. Barcelona have been always nice, but Barcelona grow up strongly thanks to the expo of Barcelona and Olimpic Games. That changed barcelona.
The same could be with Zaragoza.

Please keep us with information if you can. And if you can take pics about the projects, we would be very grateful.

I hope that Zaragoza does a better job that Sevilla with this project, so that all this infrastructure is not wasted just for the EXPO, but also improves the city afterwards.

Great project, though!!!!

This Expo is not exactly of the same kind as Seville. Seville's one in '92 was an Universal Expo, like the one of this year in Aichi. This is an International one, so it is smaller in terms of exhibition area and opening time (3 months instead of 6). There's another difference, while the universal ones don't have a specif theme, the internationals have to be dedicated to a specific subject.

Lisbon'98 was dedicated to the Discoverers, this one is dedicated to the Water.

As born in this city I'm really proud of the project.

Regards from Madrid

Some more recent pictures from the works in Expo 2008 Zaragoza.

All pictures and comments quoted from the thread http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=448302 in the spanish forum.

First of all we'll go with the only tall building in the Expo which is the water tower. The plant has the shape of a water drop. Inside it there will be only two levels, so the indoor exhibition space will be huge.

IN the pictures there are comments regarding the development of the works, in this first pictures it seems that the first parts of the curtain wall has been installes.

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/9819/img0346zq6.jpg

PD: Y si, a mi me siguen pareciendo vidrios :D

There's only one year to the kick-off of the Expo. This is an scheme with the evolution of the works in the last months.

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/4093/expojs9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

This Expo is not exactly of the same kind as Seville. Seville's one in '92 was an Universal Expo, like the one of this year in Aichi. This is an International one, so it is smaller in terms of exhibition area and opening time (3 months instead of 6). There's another difference, while the universal ones don't have a specif theme, the internationals have to be dedicated to a specific subject.

Lisbon'98 was dedicated to the Discoverers, this one is dedicated to the Water.

As born in this city I'm really proud of the project.

Regards from Madrid

Sorry, but I need to correct you, Lisbon Expo98 theme was "The Oceans: A Heritage for the Future."

http://www.parquedasnacoes.pt/en/expo98/default.asp

This Zaragoza Expo seems to go in a good sustainable, way and this time seems that all will work perfect in the future; unlike Sevilla witch was a financial and urban disaster leaving great whites behind.

The buildings look amazing I can't wait the summer comes to see them, never been at Zaragoza, but I know the historic city is amazing too, hope have time too see it all.

Keep the good work. ;)

What should the expo site and the Water Tower be used for after the World Expo?

The Water Tower and the Zaha Hadid's Bridge will remain as museums.

The Expo site will become a great financial and business center, until now the 40% of the surface is already sold.

I know this may not be related to the expo 2008, but the romareda soccer stadium was to be enlarged to a capacity of 43,000 for the World expo. The workd on La romareda will never resume and since the Expo is starting a few months from now, it will never be completed in time for the Expo.

The project to enlarge La Romareda Stadium was taken to court some years ago and then it was stopped, so everybody knew that it wouldn't be ready for the Expo.

Now, after many months, we have another project: La Romareda Stadium will be demolished and a new Stadium will be constructed in a different area of the city... let's see if in this time we get a new Stadim after all...

Some pics of the Thematic Squares Expo...

http://www.expozaragoza2008.es/docs/repositorio/imagenes/pabellones/plano_plazas_tematicas_en.jpg

The themed plazas are located between the Bridge Pavilion, Spain Pavilion and the Participants Building and their aim is to reinforce the message of the essential role of water from different viewpoints.

In total, there are six separate themed plazas with around 1,000 square metres of exhibition space.

The themed plazas are separate; each has an individual theme based around the central theme of the Expo: Water and Sustainable Development

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/3043/p1000628ce5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/2672/p1000670un3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/9919/p1000671sy1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/6071/p1000672dj7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/573/p1000676nb8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/269/p1000666hk9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/7011/p1000677vd5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/9325/p1000679pf1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/2417/p1000681no0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/545/p1000684lh3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I don't like that Gran Scala project in the video (post #61).
Gran Scala won't be exactly in Zaragoza, the developers will build it in 'Monegros', the biggest european desert.

It's a casino complex, about 30, and hotels like 'Las Vegas' but don't worry Sbz2ifc, actually GS had many problems with the region government and the soil owners.

We will see!

I gathered that Gran Scala is not in Zaragoza from the video.

Anyway, I've been following this thread for some time now and I would really like to visit Zaragoza during the Expo. There are some interesting projects (though I don't like all of them) but I'd also visit it for the beautiful historic buildings.

Can you (or anybody else) tell me more about the art nouveau gazebo/pavilion at <0:33> in the video? Does it still exist?

Water Tower!

‘This project is not difficult to sell,” says Eduardo Jarque Jr. Tourism Department Undersecretary. “We will always have a special place for Spain.”

We were at the Coconut Palace for the “Filipinas a Zaragoza: Despedida” presentation. Jarque was speaking before a crowd of Spanish dignitaries, government officials, and members of the press to officially launch the Philippine Pavilion to be used by the Tourism Department at the Expo Zaragoza 2008, slated June 14 to Sept. 14, in Zaragoza, Spain.

Indeed, Spain will always have a soft spot for Filipinos and vice versa. We were, after all, under Spanish rule for more than 300 years, more than enough time to leave us a unique set of cultures and traditions not to mention a bond that transcends time and history.

So it is that when the time comes for the country to sell the best of our tourist destinations, suffice it to say, we need less the effort but more on reconnecting with an old friend.

Expo Zaragoza is considered “the biggest water festival on Earth.” The exposition is set to attract a total of six million visitors coming from the cities of Zaragoza, Aragon Madrid and Barcelona and the rest of Spain and the world. To date, more than a hundred countries plus dozens of companies and non-government organizations are set to participate at the said exposition. And the Tourism Department hopes to make more than a splash come June.

The Tourism Department will present the unique Philippine culture, tradition, history and innovative concepts pioneering projects on water management and technology. Some of the highlights include a showcase of the rich marine and aquatic resources of the country, as well as a presentation on how local communities work together to bring about sustainable development in water resource management.

Taking off from Expo Zaragoza’s theme of “Water and Sustainable Development,” the Philippine Pavilion presents itself as the “Archipelago as Future-Perfect Waterworld,” where archipelago is more than just a geographic description but also a vital cultural attitude interspersed into a nation’s way of life.

The exhibition design of the Philippine Pavilion was planned to envelop the visitor in a fluid world akin to one’s experience underwater. Guests are taken into an open and fluid space where, within this floating world, visitors are introduced to 10 of the Philippine’s standard setting water management initiatives, together with about 250 successful community-based projects from all over the country.

“This is truly an opportune occasion to showcase our culture and tradition, history and innovative concepts and pioneering projects on sustainable water management and technology in line with the Expo theme of ‘Water and Sustainable Development,’” says Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano. “Our theme ‘Archipelago as Future-Perfect Waterworld’ projects the Philippines as more than just a geographic description but that of a cultural attitude interspersed into the nation’s way of life that propels people to the future. Hence, we call the Philippine Pavilion as future-perfect.”

Sharing a history that spans 300 years, the relationship between the Philippines and Spain has left indelible marks on Filipino tradition. The fiesta, largely influenced by centuries of Spanish heritage, will be staged on the Philippine National Day at the Expo on June 30, in consonance with the Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day. It will be a whole day affair heralding Philippine culture through a tapestry of music, dances and colorful visuals of top tourism destinations.

Pavilion visitors would also encounter “Filipino”—a whale-shark, locally known as butanding, mascot inspired by one of the best practices modules presented in the expo.

To further sustain the feel of the islands, the pavilion also has a “Coffee Nook” offering the Travel Café Philippine Drop Coffee and roasted coffee beans for tasting and demonstration on coffee preparations; the Agua y Olio, a mini-spa where guests would be treated to a sensory experience of traditional Philippine massage known as hilot, and the Agua Pacifica—the pavilion boutique that asserts “Philippine Naturally” merchandise from top Filipino producers. —Diana Uy (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=goodLife1_may15_2008)

FILIPINAS TO MAKE AN IMPACT AT EXPO ZARAGOZA 2008

Citing the Philippine’s long history of cultural ties and strong bilateral relations with Spain, Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has expressed her full cooperation and support to Spain through the country’s participation and strong commitment to make an impact at Expo Zaragoza by presenting a unique showcase of Philippine culture, tradition, history and innovations in line with the Expo theme of “Water and Sustainable Development.”

The Philippine government hopes to gain trade and tourism benefits by joining Expo 2008. “Our participation at Expo 2008 will provide an excellent opportunity for the Philippines to present itself and create awareness about its natural and cultural heritage, business and investment potentials to a wide audience across the world,” President Arroyo said. The President added that Expo 2008 will also provide valuable insights and new learning opportunities on the recent trends, best practices and innovative concepts on water technology that can be emulated by the country to improve its policy and development framework on water and sustainable development.

President Arroyo’s enthusiasm was shared by Tourism Secretary Joseph H. Durano. “Being an archipelagic country, Expo 2008 augurs well with the Philippines since the event’s theme is about water and sustainable development. I am confident that Expo 2008 will boost the country’s strong foothold as the world’s number one site for scuba diving as the center of marine biodiversity of the world,” Durano enthused. To prove his point, Durano cited a recent study conducted by a pair of noted American biologists that acknowledged the Philippines as the center of the center of fish biodiversity and the home of the most diverse marine ecosystem in the world.

The Philippines boasts of a string of records to underscore the richness and diversity of its water resources: the world’s largest pearl, the “Pearl of Lao-Tzu,” (14 pounds), was discovered in a giant mollusk under the Palawan Sea in 1934; the world’s longest underground river system accessible to man can be found also in Palawan province; the world’s shortest and lightest freshwater fish, the dwarf pygmy goby (4-5 mg., 8.7 mm.), in the streams and lakes of Luzon, to name a few.

While the Philippines endeavors to make a good impression in Expo Zaragoza to meet its objectives in increasing tourism traffic and investment to the country, they also hope that their presentation is reflected to contribute in enhancing the success and image of Expo Zaragoza 2008 in general.

Towards this end, President Arroyo has signed Administrative Order No. 177 that created a National Organizing Committee (NOC) composed of heads of different government bodies that would make preparations for the Philippine’s participation in Expo 2008 in Zaragoza, Spain. The NOC is chaired by the Department of Tourism, through its Secretary Joseph H. Durano, with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto Romulo as Vice Chair.

The Expo organizers have allocated a Pavilion space of 247 sq. m. located in the area called “Islands and Coasts”. The Philippine Pavilion will have the following components:
Exterior: Façade Interior:

* Exhibit Area
* Boutique Area (where Philippine Merchandise items will be sold)
* Restaurant Area (fast food category offering quickly prepared food)
* Health & Wellness Area
* Office Area
* Restroom

General Layout and Design

http://wowfilipinas.net/image/FloorPlanTopView.jpg

The general layout and design of the Pavilion will project the BEST of the Philippines and mirror a theme that will conform and revolve around the over-all Expo 2008 theme: “Water and Sustainable Development” touching in particular to the following points/themes as selected by the NOC:

1. Water as a Unique Resource
2. Water for Human Development
* Water Governance
* Scientific and Technological Innovation
3. Waterscapes - Protection of Special Natural Areas
4. Water for life
* Water Ecosystems
* Conservation and Recovery
* Reassessment of the Traditions, Culture, Art, and Identity related to water

The Philippines: "Archipelago as future- perfect water world".

The archipelagic country, the Philippines, will be projected in this exhibition in fast forward mode. While it is understood that this nation as waterworld enjoys a wealth of traditions, particularly with reference to complex indigenous water-management systems, the Zaragoza Expo 2008 gives Filipinos the opportunity to communicate a sense of robust, intelligent and creative future. Like water itself—the most ubiquitous dimension of the Philippine environment—the pavilion design will be seamless and fluid. It will evoke shimmering, constantly moving qualities. The pavilion’s architectural aspects will be inextricably integrated with the exhibits information and moods created in both the building’s interior and exterior. All these elements will be brought together to assertively make a single statement: that an Archipelago represents a set of ideas—not merely a geographic character—that propels its inhabitants to the future! That set of ideas emphasizes multiplicity and diversity, prismatic visual fields, complex structures, fluidity of mind, the spirit of sustainability and the slow but sure action of currents. These are the very concepts stressed by all forward thinkers in the world. We might call the Philippine Pavilion, therefore, as future perfect.

http://wowfilipinas.net/image/pavilionHeader.png

EXHIBIT AREA

The pavilion will be a space that plays gently on the imagination of visitors, enveloping them in an experience akin to a water world. The space will be defined on all sides by a coralline net structure, handcrafted by experts using metals and fibers. The exhibits will concentrate attention on diversity and on a small number of well selected features that show Filipino acumen in water oriented sustainable development. The exhibit content will include:

Bubbles of glass of various dimensions --- which are suspended as though in space. Showing images of bodies of water and life forms.

http://wowfilipinas.net/image/InfoPods.jpg

INFORMATION PODS

The bigger bubbles will showcase the Standard-Setting Practices of the Filipinos in water management and sustainable development. It will project ten (10) future perfect ideas:

Anilao

This is a rare story of a village council which summoned the political will to protect its famous coral reef, dive site, and marine sanctuary—proving that community effort, even without external assistance, can be successful and empowering.

Ifugao Rice Terraces

While these terraces have been celebrated internationally for their awesome beauty, it is not popularly known that this structure represents an extraordinary water management technology---a system of watersheds collectively protected by the Ifugao as a fundamental part of their culture.

Philippine South Sea Pearls

The focus on the operations of the pearl-farm operations of Jewelmer, Inc. is a focus on the unusual: the beautiful alignment of corporate interests and environmental health, since the pearls will not grow to perfection without an absolutely pristine sea.

Donsol: Whaleshark Town

A story of how a village embraced a marine creature, devoted themselves to its protection and organized a model and progressive local tourist setting.

Sarangani Aquaculture

The world’s need for farmed fish will be extreme in the coming decades (as wild fish stocks will have been depleted); and-the-state-of the art aquaculture sciences of Alson’s Inc. occupies a leading position in providing a viable solution to this global problem.

Philippine Geothermal Energy

(composite video with mini-hydro)
The Philippines—second in the world, after the United States, in the percentage of geothermal energy production and use in the total energy picture of the country—has become robust model in harnessing of a geological gift towards freedom from fossil fuel dependence.

Philippine Mini-Hydro Energy

The Philippines is among the world’s leaders in the intensive utilization of mini-hydro production units to produce very small increments of energy to power village-level life---demonstrating thus the deep logic of sustainable development. A renewable energy source which can be deployed at a local level.

El Nido Resort

Palawan Resort Extraordinaire. El Nido Resorts, cited by Conde Nast publications as one of the world’s best run and spectacularly beautiful tourism facilities, also represents a highwater mark in the field of marine conservation---particularly, in the use of ceramic structures for coral reef regeneration. One of the world’s spectacular and well- managed resorts.

Tubbataha Reef

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known globally as a spectacular reef that maintains the heritage of the Sulu-Sulawesi Triangle (the world’s most diversed marine ecosystem) but it’s story will be incomplete without a focus on the rare cooperation among communities, regional, national and international players in environmental conservation.

Balicasag : Nation and Village

The tourism site represents successful cooperation of local and national tourism planners and custodians : the exquisite Balicasag, surrounded by waters that are home to small cetaceans and a host of other species is now a breathtaking place to visit. A Special Interest Resort showcasing a model for marine environmental conservation, ecological preservation and tourism;
