Hey guys, does anyone have any updates on that massive ring road project in Bangkok? It's that huge project with multiple spans and overpasses that cross the major river. I am surprised there have been no updates, has construction been delayed or something?

Jerry writes: Today they have been erecting the blue hoist for the roadway erection on the Rama 3 Tower roadway. Also on the northern tower on the southern river crossing, they have installed the formwork to give the top of the tower a flare to finish it off...seems all the cable guide tubes are installed. For the southern river crossing, there will be 14 cables each side (56 total for both sides of both towers) of the bridge to carry the 390 meter span. For the northern span of 280 meters, there will be 11 cables each side of each tower. The two bridges are different heights i guess...

Danger! 50,000 volts
November 24th, 2005, 05:23 PM
Impressive bridge - I am a big fan of the modern cable stayed design.
I'm guessing both bridges will be of same height, as water traffic at this stage of the river includes larger feeder container ships (up to 2500 TEU) as well as passenger cruiseships, these vessels usually have a max. height above water of 40m. Guessing the bridge will incorporate a good 15-20m safety margin, thus roadway height around 60metres. The difference in the number of cables will be proportional to the centre span of the bridge.

An impressive feature is the multigrade interchange between the bridges which, due to the height of the bridges is also quite a distance off the ground, maybe one of the worlds tallest?

The Mega Bridge crosses twice the Chao Phraya river. The four pylons for the 702 m and 582 m long bridge sections reach heights of 173 m.
http://www.peri.de/ww/en/pub/presse/juli_01_05/downl_1.cfm
The Mega Bridge (part of the industrial ring road project), as it has been called, will span a meander loop in the Chao Phraya River; thus it will have two major spans, but also in the middle there will be a complex circular intersection. This means that a motorist may cross the first bridge span and then branch off to the northern roads by using the intersection. The bridge was originally planned as far back as 1997; however it was held up for a major redesign (reducing the number of support pillars to two instead of one), and almost cancelled following the Thai economic crisis in 2001. The bridge is due to be completed in 2006.
The concept designers for the Mega Bridge is Yee Associates Architects and Designers. The project management for the engineering and construction are Norconsult International and the Thai companies MAA, Span and Team Consulting and Management International. There are a team of eight contractors working on the project, including the industrial ring road and the Mega Bridge. These include Italian Thai, Sumitomo, CH. Karnchang, Obayashi, Unique, Kajima, CMS Construction, Taisei Corporation. The bridge and the immediate sections of highway are expected to cost in excess of 8.7 billion Baht.
The bridge will be 51m high to allow clearance for shipping to pass beneath it to the container port at Klong Toey. The structure will be 4.2km long and will have seven lanes to link Pu Chao Saming Prai Road with Rama 3 Road. The intersection in the middle will have a 2.2km ramp to connect it with Sukaswat Road. The bridge itself will be supported by two large 'A' shaped cable supports similar to the style and type used in the construction of the Rama 3 Bridge completed in 2003. The two pillars will be supported by piles 70m deep and the structures will be designed to take three times the maximum load. The foundations took a 30hr continuous pour of concrete. The bridge straddles the Wongwein Yai area and connects the Industrial Ring Road project. The land areas beneath the bridge and intersection will be landscaped and redeveloped as leisure facilities.

Enerpac Integrated Hydraulic Solution for IRR Bangkok project
Movement of the world’s largest movable
scaffolding system
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/336/30041054zo.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The IRR industrial ring road project in Bangkok’s main industrial area with 13 km road connected by two 172 meters high bridges.
An industrial ring road is constructed to relieve the traffic congestion in Bangkok’s main industrial areas. This large Bangkok IRR project includes two 700 meters long, 172 meters high cable stayed bridges connecting 13 kilometers of ring road. Hydraulic systems are designed to move the heaviest 1200 tons formwork travelers in South East Asia.
THAILAND - the land of smiles, located in southeast Asia near the Andaman sea, home to 64 million Thai people. 11 million of those people live in the capital of Bangkok. With that many commuting and traveling everyday the traffic is chaotic and nightmarish for most.
There are many reasons for the environmental stress generated by modern urbanization. Around 400 – 600 vehicles are added to the streets of Bangkok everyday causing an ever increasing volume of traffic. This causes enormous traffic jams and subsequently a great deal of social and economic difficulties. Consequently the average travel speed in central Bangkok during peak hours is a mere 12 km/hr!
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/2151/30041014my.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
For allowing ships access to Bangkok’s harbour, the bridge deck of the intersection between the two cabled stayed bridges over the Chao Phraya River will be 50 m high.
Therefore to make it easier for local residents and visitors alike to travel inside Bangkok, the infrastructure promised by the government of Thailand has to be fully developed to deal with the increasing number of people. Though it would not seem plausible to many, in fact Bangkok was the first Southeast Asian city to propose plans to introduce a system for the reduction of traffic congestion. Incidentally, Thailand was only the third Asian country, after Japan and Hong Kong to propose such a system. There are already in place various ways that are meant to reduce traffic congestion. Many bridges exist both within the city and its outlying suburbs. In place there is also the sky train which services the city center. 2004 saw the MRTA’s Bangkok subway system start operating for the first time. In an effort to tackle Bangkok’s perpetual traffic problems the government has also committed to expanding the road and railway system through massive expenditure in the coming decade.
The idea for an industrial ring road system was originally put forward by his Majesty the King, in order to relieve the traffic congestion for the areas of Bangkok Port, Poochao Saming Phrai Road and Suksawat Road which are the main industrial areas. The details and logistics involved in carrying out a project of this size in the city has been laid out including the purchase of land and property, demolition of 881 residences and factories, the construction of bridges and roads through swampy and river flooded areas and the re-routing of river ferry services and industrial traffic. The project involves two cable stayed bridges. The bridges are 702m long and 172m high and 582m long and 162m high respectively on concrete pylons. There are 3500 meters of approach bridges, 500 meters of high-level road and 9,1 km of graded road. For this mega project the worlds largest Movable Scaffolding System (MSS) has been commissioned. The contractors for the construction of the bridge for the industrial Ring Road area of which 20% is done, are TNNS joint venture (Tai Sei + Nishimatsu + NKK + Sino Thai) and KTU consortium ( Kajima – Tokyo – Unique Engineering).
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/3083/30041084nz.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Bridge sections of the IRR-Bangkok project under construction.
More impressive still is that this unique double bridge complex is built with and uses engineering solution unseen anywhere else in the world! For allowing ships access to Bangkok’s Klong Toey harbour coming up from the Chao Phraya River, the bridge will be 50 m high. Also due to the snaking course of the river on its way to the gulf of Thailand, the bridge will cross the Chao Phraya River not once but twice without touching the ground. Finally in mid air a full 50 meters up, an intersection between the two bridges will be built. This will allow motorists to go north without crossing the second bridge! The reason for this design is because the strip of land between parts of the river is incredibly narrow, making it impossible to construct a normal intersection.
Construction of this section of the project has just become underway and when finished will be part of the Industrial Ring Road connecting Samut Prakarn from the rivers east side to Phra Pradaeng on the rivers west side. Not including the cost of acquiring land, the projects construction will cost the Public Works Department a total of approximately 6 Billion Baht or $145 million U.S. dollars. Of this vast figure 60 percent is financed from Japan as a loan, while the remaining 40 percent is from local government funds.
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/9202/30041041rl.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
This project is owned by the Public Works Department (PWD). The sections are divided into 3 contracts which are being worked on by two different contractor groups.
Both contracts number 1 and number 2 are for the Northern and Southern bridges and are being done by TNNS joint ventures. (Taisei / NKK Corporation / Nishimatsu and Sino Thai Construction)
While contract number 3 for the Western elevated interchange entrance and exits is being done by KTU joint ventures. (Tokyo Construction / Kajima and Unique Engineering)
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/4577/30041096oi.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Behind the movement of such huge steel structures safely and efficiently high overhead, plus steering and positioning; possibly the heaviest 1200 tons Formwork Traveler in South East Asia, heavy-duty hydraulics had to be engaged.
With a proven track record for safety and reliability, Enerpac was chosen by main contractor, Taisei to design and supply the hydraulic systems to be integrated in the movable scaffolding system. The typical formwork arrangement requires 2 custom-built 7,5 kW low pressure hydraulic power units to actuate 24 pieces of 100 tons horizontal and 60 pieces vertical cylinders complete with clevis eye and mounting attachments to allow formwork pushing and pulling operations. On the 700 bar high pressure side, 4 pieces of specially designed Enerpac – CLL-25010, 250 tons capacity lock-nut jacks coupled with 2 units of standard RRH-6010 Hollow center jacks provide lifting, lowering and tensioning forces respectively on the main support of the formwork.
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/4140/30041077cw.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
While on the (MSS) Movable Scaffolding System, a large quantity of different sets and sizes of integrated high and low pressure hydraulic pumps & cylinders provided solutions for various applications such as vertical nose adjustment, longitudinal & side launching as well as bottom slab folding plus rolling wagon operations. Just to name a few of its applications within it's intricate system. In one instance alone, 72 units of 50 tons low-pressure cylinders are used on the External formwork's vertical adjustment.
Being a global company, Enerpac hydraulics exercised close collaboration between its Japan, Singapore & Thailand offices, thus displaying great expertise in its system supply and commissioning.
Fostering good business relationships and regular follow-ups with all its major contractors at site also boosted confidence and reinforced the strong brand name that ENERPAC is recognized as a popular worldwide name.

Bridge for the Kanchanaphisek Outer Ring Road (southern section)
http://www.2bangkok.com
This bridge crosses the Choa Phraya River to complete the existing ring road loop. This smaller bridge is part of the Kanchanaphisek Outer Ring Road (southern section). Thus far, the southern section of Kanchanaphisek Outer Ring Road runs from Bang Bon Interchange to Suksawat Road. The Highway Department is trying to find a contractor for the bridge and the rest of Kanchanaphisek Outer Ring Road. All of the following drawings and maps are from a Ministry of Transport and Communications display at the Intertraffic Asia 2002 convention (June 12-14, 2002). This bridge would simply cross the Chao Phraya River. Since the larger bridge for the Industrial Ring Road would effectively allow vehicles to cross the Chao Phraya River south of the city (without entering the city), 2b wonders if this bridge will be built at all.

Flew low over Chao Praya about a week ago, the 3 major bridges U/C look simply stunning.
Any idea how long it will be before all BKKs highways completed? From the air seems to already have a worlds class road system, tho city of angels needs it!!!
On ground tho see many sections of expressway that seem to stop, like Bang Na expway, Vibhavadi expway, and sections off 1st + 2nd stages, etc.

Ring road nears completion
B8.7 billion project now 80% complete
SOMCHAI POOMLARD
http://www.bangkokpost.net/News/170406_news005.jpg
The royal-initiated industrial ring road in Phra Pradaeng district of Samut Prakan will open in December to improve transport between industrial zones south of Bangkok and the rest of the nation.
Surachai Thansitthipong, the director-general of the Rural Roads Department, says construction of the 8.7-billion-baht project is now 80% complete.
Major construction work will be finished in June and the finishing work will be concluded in October.
Construction of the industrial ring road was divided into three contracts. The first deal is for construction of a cable-stayed bridge, which is 550 metres long and has seven lanes, across the Chao Phraya river in Phra Pradaeng district. It links tambon Song Khanong and tambon Bang Ya Phraek.
The second contract is for another cable-stayed bridge across another section of the same river north of the first bridge. The second bridge connects tambon Song Khanong and Khwaeng Bang Pong Pang of Yannawa district, Bangkok. It is 454 metres long and has seven lanes as well.
The third contract is for construction of a large-scaled interchange to link both bridges. It is 1,659 metres long and has two lanes.
On an area of 75 rai under the elevated interchange, there will be a public park, a road museum and a cultural centre of local Mon people. The on-the-ground development is estimated at 430 million baht.
The Rural Roads Department is also discussing development of passenger boat piers in the vicinity of the industrial ring road with the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Marine Department.
Mr Surachai said the industrial ring road will have three entrances and exits: Rama III road through Ban Rawee 1 road, Pu Chao Saming Phrai road near the Thong Khung railway station, and Suksawat road.
The industrial ring road is designed especially to improve transport of products from industrial areas on both sides of the Chao Phraya river south of Bangkok to Bangkok Port in Klong Toey and other parts of the country.
The ring road can serve up to 100,000 vehicles a day and is expected to relieve traffic volume on the nearby Rama IX bridge by 50%.
With the industrial ring road, cargo trucks will not have to run through congested districts of Bangkok to reach the industrial zones in Pu Chao Saming Phrai, Phra Pradaeng and Suksawat areas. Besides, ferry service across the Chao Phraya river in Phra Pradaeng will become a thing of the past for most of the trucks.
Chanika Tesdontri, the manager of Petra ferry service, said when the new ring road -opens, her company could reduce the number of its ferries from 15 to just three or four and the number of ferry piers from eight on the Pu Chao Saming Phrai side and five on the Phra Pradaeng side to three each.
That would cut its revenue by 80%. Most of her employees would return to their home provinces or find new jobs.
Instead of terminating the whole service, Mrs Chanika said a small part of it would be retained to serve some clients who should continue to need it despite the emergence of the ring road.
The ring road development cushions its impact on the ferry service as it expropriated land covering altogether over 10 rai on both sides of the river from her company and gave over 100 million baht in compensation.
Mrs Chanika said that despite the disruption it would cause to her business, she would be delighted to see the new ring road improve business and traffic flow in Samut Prakan.

Can't believe such behemoth managed to rise up in such a short time cos when I was in Bkk the last time end of 2003, this whole project had just started or something (I remember it being postponed or something)

Bangkok bridge gets colourful introduction Lighting, fireworks set to dazzle residents By Amornrat Mahitthirook BKK Post 03/09/06
The as-yet-unnamed ring road bridge will unveil its beauty on Saturday in a breathtaking light and fireworks display that will make it stand out from other bridges across the Chao Phraya river. The cable-stayed bridge encompasses both Thai arts and the latest in lighting technology in its design. The diamond-shaped tops of the four main towers were influenced by the Thai headdress, the Chada. It symbolises the precious gift which His Majesty the King had extended to his subjects, said caretaker Deputy Transport Minister Chainant Charoensiri.
It is the first of its kind to display light emitting diodes (LED) digital lighting technology, noted for energy efficiency and brilliant visibility. The Rural Highways Department has come up with special lighting designs for holidays such as Songkran and New Year. The King suggested the 2.6km-bridge be built to link industrial zones and Klong Toey port to free congested districts of cargo trucks. The bridge, which will be granted a formal name by the King and officially opened next month, is part of an industrial ring road which connects Samut Prakan's Phra Pradaeng district with Bangkok.
Over the river into Bangkok, the seven-lane bridge spreads into three directions: Rama III road, Pu Chao Saming Phrai road and Suk Sawat road. On-the-ground developments include a public park, road museum and cultural centre for local Mon people on a 75-rai area under the elevated exchange.
To mark the 60th anniversary of the King's accession to the throne, a walkathon will take place this Saturday on the suspension bridge. The event will include a small puppet show to glorify the King.
Later in the evening, Princess Ubolratana will preside over the bridge lighting ceremony, followed by a spectacular fireworks display. The lights will also be turned on on Sept 10-12, from 6pm to midnight, to allow photographers to take pictures which they can enter in a special photography competition. The winner, to be named Sept 22, will receive the Princess' trophy and a 100,000-baht prize

how do they light it up?
from the ground?
Jo
September 12th, 2006, 12:53 PM
The cables are lit up by spotlights next to the road surface, as seen here:
http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/6398/64654this20is20a20sapan2026rt4.jpg
The color changing lights on the pylons are provided by a massive amount of tiny LED lights mounted along the height of the pylons.
The crowns I think are lit by spotlights up there and there seems to be spotlights on the ground to illuminate the lower parts of the pylons.

nope, the thais did like the arabs, brits designed it and oversaw construction, thai labor was there a little to do some work, but mostly it was brits.

Right.. It's like the Japanese auto maker (Toyota) builds more plants in the US, thousands of jobs are created domestically, and yet it's said to be "made in USA." ;)
LosAngelesMetroBoy
April 15th, 2007, 09:03 PM
but even after all the budget cuts ford and gm still employ more US manufacturing jobs than any other company.
Although Nissan is a close second. Toyota is 4th in that list, behind daimler/chrystler (a german company btw.)

there's really nothing to brag about - it's really not a great looking bridge. the design is pretty basic and fundamental. it doesnt even run straight - looks lopsided and crooked at all angles. now that new viaduct bridge in france....THAT is something to brag about!!!
