by Reuters on Tuesday, 20 February 2007 Yemen is in talks with a Dubai-based company to build a 14-km (8.7 mile) bridge across the Red Sea to the Horn of Africa country of Djibouti, a Yemeni official said on Tuesday.

A UAE newspaper said the project, estimated to cost $1 billion, could be launched within two months, though it was not immediately clear when it would be completed.

"The company and the government are still in negotiations," a senior Yemeni government official told Reuters. "This project, if implemented, will be a main gate between Africa and Asia. It is crucial for trade and tourism."

UAE newspaper al-Bayan cited unnamed officials on Tuesday as saying that Dubai-based Middle East Development company was discussing the bridge project with both Djibouti and Yemen, an Arab country on the southwestern edge of the Arabian peninsula.

It said the project would span Yemen's Red Sea island of Perim across the strait of Bab al-Mandib to Djibouti.

As well as a motorway to carry cars and trucks, the bridge will include a railway track which will be used to transport goods imported from Russia, India and China to Africa, it said.

Nice!

Hopefully this will bring more people to drive across to Yemen instead of risking their lives across the Gulf of Aden. And of course to bring more commerce between the two (and Somalia and Eritrea nearby). This will affect the whole region positively.

Next time I go to Djibouti and Somalia, I could just rent a car and take a little trip to Aden. :)

wow, only a 9 mile divide. I knew they were close but I didn't know that close. That would be great and should be a given. The 1 billion dollar price tage does sound a bit small.

Isn't that coastal area by the horn of africa / red sea a hub for pirates? Who will secure the bridge?

This is like that bridge between spain and morocco that never happened either...

That bridge was much complexer and would cost loads of money

But the distance is comparable isn't it?

Btw, this still doesn't answer the piracy / terrorism aspect. Wouldn't it be very easy to go and ram this bridge with some boat filled with explosives by some extremists????

The piracy on the Gulf of Aden wasn't comparable to the rampant piracy on the Indian ocean.

Pirates stay away from the Bab-el-Mandeb. It's too important to oil tankers going to Europe and the US from the Persian Gulf, and with the French and American troops in Djibouti, they wouldn't get away with it easy. The US Navy also patrols the gulf.

But of course, there is always a threat.

Here is a picture of the area, Djibouti to the southwest, Yemen to the northeast:

Acting on endorsements and pledges of land from the president of Yemen and the president of the African nation of Djibouti, a Dubai-based developer has tapped an American firm to build a bridge across the Red Sea.

Middle East Development LLC on April 25 issued a notice-to-proceed to Noor City Development Corp., Napa, Calif. It authorizes Noor City, as sole agent, "to proceed with the planning, development, construction and management of the bridge between Yemen and Djibouti."

MED is chaired by Tarek M. Bin Laden. His second-generation company, a powerhouse of construction in the Middle East, labors under the dark reputation of Bin Laden's notorious half-brother, Osama Bin Laden. While Osama's name is an anathema to much of the world, the greater Bin Laden family has a long history of driving major construction and development in the region. Its work continues today with signature projects throughout the region. Tarek Bin Laden turns aside questions about his half brother, saying he has no contact with him and no knowledge of his whereabouts.

The newly formed Noor City Development Corp. is led by Tariq E. Ayyad, president. Ayyad is also president of ShareChive LLC, San Francisco, a technology firm with patented systems for delivering constantly refreshed project data to mobile computers on jobsites, with an emphasis on highway and large infrastructure. Ayyad is an American of Kuwaiti extraction, a civil engineer, construction manager and a former bridge engineer with the California Dept. of Transportation.

Ayyad says MED's goal is to create economic opportunity and stability on both sides of the Red Sea by tying in the bridge to new rail and road construction hubs and networks in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

"MED is a developer. They want to create jobs, they want to move products," Ayyad says. "It is very, very critical to connect the African nations and their products and crops right to the Middle East. The Middle East is extremely wealthy in money and oil, but we lack quite a lot of crops and services."

Noor City is forming an international commission to refine concepts for a design/build/operate/transfer concession to create the rail and highway crossing. Concepts developed by Danish engineering firm COWI envision a 28.5 km crossing with a suspension span over the Bab al Mendab Straits.

Phase I will likely be a 3.5 km leap to the Yemeni island of Perim and a 4 km land link to the western channel. Phase II may be broken into several contracts for the 21.5 km transit to Djibouti, which will include 13 km of suspension bridge and 8 km of girder bridge. Cost is estimated at between $10 billion and $20 billion, depending on design, project organization and financing. Construction would take seven to nine years.

"If you open up to this [transportation system that provides access into the heart of Africa] then you can create jobs by moving products, moving services," Ayyad says. "You can ignite economic development just by the transportation element. The bridge is really critical."

Nope, they don't have the money...it'll be financed by the Emiratis...

Foreign investment in Djibouti (can't speak for Yemen) from the UAE has literally boomed in the last few years. A few hotels and resorts have been built, and Djibouti's strategic port is being run by Dubai Port International...

It will start better trade links between Yemen and the Horn.

There needs to be more trade between East Africa and Arabia, and this, along with stronger port and air links, will help both countries (and neighboring countries) develop together.

Yeah it should accelerate development in the horn. There is a lot of room for Agriculture in the Horn of Africa and the Rest of East Africa so this "Bridge" should enhance Trade.

And Might I add, that apart from strengthening Trade, Yemen and Djibouti can make Money through Tolling. So Djibouti could just become another Panama.

The bridge is only a revival of all old Sheba Provinces reconnection program in order to uplift the whole area economically. There was a bridge in 2300BC between the two sides and was destroyed during the Himyarat Invasion of Abessinya (Ethiopia today). The population of both sides are connected by blood and family ties, and rebuilding this historic region of the world will be beneficial not only to Yemen and the Horn of Africa but to the whole world. The main aim is to open a new window for travel and tourism and alongside what comes with it from agricultural productions to financial institutions.

Bin Laden's $20bn bridge venture

http://www.arabianbusiness.com/images/magazines/arabianbusiness.com/web/horn_of_africa_thumb.jpg

A member of the Bin Laden family is looking to build a 17-mile bridge linking Yemen and Djibouti on the Horn of Africa in a bid to connect the Middle East and Africa.

According to a British newspaper report today, the bridge - to be known as 'the bridge of the century' - would be the longest in the world, costing £10 billion ($20.6 billion) and boasting highway and rail links.

Sheikh Tarek Mohammed Bin Laden, has outlined his plans to both Yemen and Djibouti, winning support and offers of land from both presidents.

The bridge proposes to link Asia and Africa and would boost trade from both sides of the Red Sea.

Sheikh Tarek, as part of the Saudi-based construction conglomerate Bid Laden Group, is also looking to build a 'luxury city' on the Djibouti coast which would create 100,000 jobs and stretch over 375 square miles, the Sunday Times said.

The proposed bridge - which would take nine years to construct - would have a centre span of 3.1 miles and would allow up to 100,000 cars and 50,000 train passengers to cross per day.

Ethiopia's Al-amoudi building $150 million hotel in Yemen

http://nazret.com/blog/media/blogs/new/al_amoudi_030508.jpg

Ethiopia born Saudi business tycoon, Sheik Mohammed Al-amoudi is also the chairman of Golden Leaves Hotels and Resorts Ltd, late last month laid a foundation stone for a hotel project in the Aser area of Sana’a, Yemen, estimated to cost 150 million USD.

Sources disclosed to Capital that the hotel that will be established on 150,000 square meters is expected to be completed within three years.

According to information obtained, Sheik Al-amoudi decided to build a hotel after a discussion he held with Yemeni officials at a Conference for Investment Opportunities, held in Sana’a in April 2007.

Al Amoudi owns a wide ranging business portfolio, notable amongst which are oil refineries in Sweden and Morocco, gold mines, agriculture projects and industrial projects. He is also the founder and chairman of MIDROC Ethiopia Group, which owns diversified business sectors in Ethiopia. His hotels portfolio includes properties in Ethiopia, Uganda, Djibouti, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Europe and Yemen where two new hotels are under construction.

In 2008, Forbes magazine ranked Mohammed Al Amoudi as the 77th richest person in the world with a net worth of $9 billion. Mohammed Al Amoudi is Ethiopia’s richest person and the richest black person in the world. In 2006 his net worth was estimated as between $2.5 and $6.9 billion, causing Arabian Business to rank him as the world’s 8th richest Arab, and Forbes to rank him as the world’s 77th richest person. Al Amoudi’s father is Yemeni and his mother is Ethiopian. He immigrated to Saudi Arabia in 1965 and became a Saudi citizen. Depending on disparate ethnic categorizations, and Al Amoudi’s mixed Ethiopian and Yemeni parentage, he is one of the richest Arabs.

Al Amoudi made his fortune in construction and real estate before branching out to buy oil refineries in Sweden and Morocco. He is said to be the largest foreign investor in both Sweden and Ethiopia.
