Bank of China Tower
Hongkong, China
HEIGHT: 367m/ 1,204 feet
FLOORS: 72 floors
COMPLETION: 1989
ARCHITECT: Pei Cobb Freed & Partners
Soaring 369 meters high, the Bank of China Tower is one of the world's tallest buildings. When commissioned to design the building, I.M. Pei wanted to create a structure that would represent the aspirations of the Chinese people yet also symbolize good will toward the British Colony. Original plans included an x-shaped cross-brace. However, in China the X shape is seen as a symbol of death. Instead, Pei opted to use less threatening diamond forms.
Another symbol used for this building is that of the bamboo plant, which represents revitalization and hope. The sectioned trunk of the Bank of China Building is inspired by the growth patterns of bamboo.
The four triangular shafts which form the building grow narrower as the building rises. These shafts support the weight of the building and eliminate the need for many internal vertical supports. Consequently, the Bank of China uses less steel than typical for a building its size.
The Bank of China Tower was the tallest building in Asia upon completion, until 1992, when Hong Kong's Central Plaza took the tile. The tower houses an observation deck on the 42nd floor which is open to the public.

This is the building that actually started my whole fascination with skyscrapers and architecture. The first time I saw a picture of it I was stunned by its beauty. It is the best - my favourite building in the world. I think this building deserves http://www.web3d.org/technicalinfo/specifications/vrml97/Images/infinity.gif?/10, but the best I can do is give it a very enthusiastic 10/10!

This building has always, always, been at the top of my list and heart - even back when it was just a thought to be built. The site for this building has so much history (and, actually a lot of bloodshed that almost kept this architect from getting to build the tower on the small site...more to that whole storyline...)
Mine is a TEN.

Bank of China was designed by I. M. Pei, a Chinese American. He also designed the pyramid entrances to the Louvre. The site was previously occupied by Murray House. The building was moved brick by brick to Stanley :

9/10 - Soaring height which is helped by the overall shape with the slanting setbacks, and boy, does that shining glass facade dance with the light! And the white bracings are a very nice contrast. There's a certain elegant simplicity here, I think.

The Bank of China is thrilling to see in person. I stare up at it
and feel the power of the angles, enjoy the tint of the glass,
This tower is instantly recognizable by people who don't even
pay attention to buildings. They see this skyscraper and they
know it's Hong Kong.

My favorite building in Asia, I gave it a 9/10. Very interesting design, and cool looking, albeit imperfect. From the right (or rather, wrong) angle, the massing is way off. The second picture is a good example... it's just too fat at the bottom and skinny at the top.

OK .. I must admit I was always a 'fan' of BoC, but always admired many other scrapers as well equally .. I mean its very clever design but after all isn't it just some triangles and blue glass ????
Maybe.. but that was until I saw it in the flesh last week!!!!

I thought I'd seen enough pictures to pass it off and know what to expect .. but really seeing it in person, from some very subtle and different angles at different times of the day.. like walking back down the hill from the peak tram at night..
Oh wow.. gobsmacked isnt the word!!
And I didnt get nearly the same reaction from Central Plaza, The Centre or even 2IFC for much of the time (though I loved them all greatly nonetheless)
So it's easily 10/10 for me.. the sad part is I can no longer quite look at my beloved Rialto quite the same again.. tho that will also be a 10/10 for me anyway. And theres always Eureka to come!

Stanford - LOL :rotf:
You're not the first to think that...I recall seeing a cartoon from the 1920s or 1930s showing a young, enthusiastic architect trying to sell a skepitcal owner/developer on a building that looked rather like the Chrysler Building, with an adjustable spire carefully hidden inside, ready to be raised higher as needed...
[would this have been called cheating, I wonder?]

One of the most beautiful building I've ever seen. The first time I saw the Hong Kong skyline was from a brochure I got at the HK international airport. I was blown away by the density. The building that just stood out was Bank of China. Without BoC and Central Plaza, HK skyline would be considerably weakened.
The only one thing I hate is the doggone spires, what's up with Asian skyscrapers having spires 200 ft.+ above its true height?

I don't think it's unnecessary. The only people who would seriously give the Bank of China Tower such a low rating are people who are being dishonest. If you notice, not a single person actually admitted in this thread that he or she voted "3 or less" for this tower... before you of course, but you wouldn't have voted that way if I hadn't posted my list anyway, so that doesn't count :)

As to how I found out who voted... it's a secret :D

With regards to how much of a "hater" I am of HK, and my maturity level, let my conduct thus far and from this moment on speak for itself.
Granted, I do live to regret my moment of folly months ago in not taking these polls seriously. Never was I to realise that a few seconds of totlessness could have such a major repercussion after such a long time.
There was more then enough time to regain one's senses. If there is an option to change the vote, I most probably would today.

Actually I'd like to make some things clear:
-everybody has a right to vote any score they want
-everybody has a right to say what score they gave or keep silent
Now huaiwei has already mentioned that he voted 3 because he wasnt taking the poll seriously. Now he didnt have to but he did, so give him a break. The sad truth of any poll here is that the '3 or less' poll always throws up many surprises, as well as biased voting for '10'. This applies to other buildings and cities as well.
@DMac, now it was a very juicy thing to do, revealing confidential poll results in public, but you know that is against forum etiquette. As a former mod I am sure you know the extreme importance of being confidential here. Please dont do this again.;)
Lets move on from here and rate this building!

DMac > Since you're so righteous and noble - why dun you reveal those whom voted 3 or less for Petronas? I am sure those 2 buildings are architectural triumphs as well but no one seems to notice that there are 32 votes of 3 or less......do I as a native of KL complain?
And to the rest of the forumers......please do not judged a person by these polls :ohno:

January 6th, 2004, 11:55 AM
Well, I have to disagree with these views.
If someone doesn't take the poll seriously I think it's better to just say so - without voting and try to change the outcome for those who do take it seriously. I think it's old HK vs Spore rivalry at play here.
I don't see anything wrong with exposing the votes either. If people can't stand up to their votes, then don't vote. Quite simple eh? Same as if you post some text.. people can see it, otherwise what's the meaning? We are rating buildings, not voting for a political party here.
If nothing else, I'm glad the retardness of wbiss1 - wbiss10 was shown.

I remember there were at least 100 people (who are jealous of this building) voted 3-or-less couple weeks ago, and now the number was reduced to 70 something.
Same thing happens to the Chrysler Building, but all the 3-or-less votes were canceled.
Did anyone had adjusted the result?
Why the all the 3-or-less votes of Chrysler were omitted but the votes of BOC were not?
I think it is not fair.:guns1:

9.5 - Possibly the most visually striking building in the world. Evokes power, majesty and grandeur. I wish Pei would have given the square base one more "diamond before the first inset. This would have provided more height and vertical symmetry. The views that enable you to see all four facets of the building would rate a perfect "10". However, I am not as fond of the views that only include the base and the top. The building loses its proportionality from those angles. But, still one of the world's best.

If you see it in pictures, it's stunning. But when you walk up to it in person, all your hairs stand up. It has a monstrous presence.
This thing wasn't built to be practical in terms of space usage. It was built to be a piece of art, and remains Hong Kong's most innovative skyscraper. I would wager that it's one of the most unique buildings in the entire world.
Great that now the spires are also lit up. It looked really weird at night with the new lighting scheme and no illuminated spires.

In my opinion, vastly overrated, but still great. Its simple, yet elegant geometric design really gives Hong Kong that extra boost in character and futuristic architecture. A 9.5/10 from me. :okay:
