ABOUT MADRID
Madrid is the capital of Spain in the south of E.U. and is located in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula at 667m of altitude and with over 6 million people living in an area of 7995km2 (1,2% of the country). Its GIP is 29% bigger than the E.U. GIP, with some 30.000Euros in 2005. The population of the city itself is 3.228.359 people in an area of 607 km2. The south of the metropolitan area closest to the capital is the most populated, 991.787 people living just in 6 municipalities (Mostoles, Fuenlabrada, Alcorcon, Getafe, Leganés and Parla) which formed what is called "the great south".[B]

[B]The Madrid Metro is one of the most extensive and fastest-growing metro networks in the world, it is now the second largest metro system in Europe, second only to London's Underground. The metropolitan area of Madrid is also served by an extensive commuter rail network called Cercanías.

The area is served by Barajas International Airport with a current passenger volumes range upwards of 44 million passengers per year, putting it in the top 20 busiest airports in the world. Last February the new Terminal 4 became the biggest European airport terminal and it doubled the capacity of the airport to more than 70 Millions passengers per year.

Madrid's freeways net is great due to the huge number of vehicles registered in the area and to the ones crossing it in their transit to other iberian peninsula areas.

Madrid's first/inner freeway round ring of its 4 ones is called M-30 and carries over 330.000 cars/day.
M-30 is 30km long and it was started to built in the late sixties.
Now a days M-30 is changing completely, is being rebuilt to improve those areas of Madrid near it, especially the west side, close to the Manzanares river, the total cost of the proyect is 3.900.000.000 euros and when finished most of the highway will be a tunnel and its capacity will be extended in 100.000 more cars/day.
The name of the project is "Madrid Calle 30" which means "Madrid 30th Street"

Hi
I'm from Madrid too, i would like to show you a big map with all the road network of the metropolitan zone of Madrid. You will understand the importance of the M30 ring in our road network and what's being done. The map pic is so big ( 7 Mbytes ) so if you have low speed connection, please do right buttom+"save as" to have it in you computer.

Excuse for my english:
MANZANARES- Madrid M-30
This is the real reason to make this work, open a new big green zone around the Manzanares river(near of the centre of the city).
The M-30 running through the centre of van Madrid will be routed underground through a 6 km long passage with four junctions.
This operation will result in the small river valley reversing the front and back of the city. The municipality of Madrid set up an international design competition. The invited architects included Herzog & de Meuron (Switzerland), Dominic Perrault (France), O.M.A. Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón of Madrid announced the winner in a city hall press conference. First prize was given to the design proposal from West 8 landscape architects together with the local architecture offices Burgos & Garrido Arquitectos s.l., Porras & La Casta Arquitectos s.c.p. and Rubio & Álvarez-Sala Arquitectosis. The design is based on a park with five streams, one boulevard and a spectacular land bridge.
The place (on the photo) is the tunnel 10.1 to 11.2.(+-7km)

Am working at similar (but 3.5 times smaller) project in Riga :) Am happy to see that Madrid did the thing we are only dreaming and planning.
These pictures are extremely impressive. Gives me idea that we should make landscape aerophotographs of our route before the start of works - would come in handy later to show to the public. (...now I am thinking how much it will cost and whom to hire :D )

Torke, Thank you so much for showing us this. I have often wondered what Madrid was like, and you have shown me a great deal that I have not been able to find anywhere else.
Naturally, most sites only show the "tourist stuff", museums, churches, festivals, etc. You have brought the city of Madrid to life for me, and made it real.
Perhaps, one day, if I am very fortunate, I'll be able to visit there.
Your photos have made certain that I want to visit Madrid.

I am from Madrid, although I am living in the countryside in southwestern Spain, but Madrid is in my heart. Many times Madrid and the rest of Spain don´t get the international projection they deserve. But I am sure that projects like these ones are what we need.
The future is brilliant if Spaniards keep working hard. I have being living is the UK for 4 years and at the begining we the Spaniards believe that Spain is not up to the level of the resto of EU members. It is only when you move abroad and check the reality, that you realize that Spain is great and have things to improve but others that lead the way.
Maybe this kind of complex that we have is helping us to improve. When you think that you are doing things worse than others you try to improve. Other countries think they are better than the rest and they are just falling behind, because they don´t realize that they also need to improve.
Just a thought.

Maybe this kind of complex that we have is helping us to improve. When you think that you are doing things worse than others you try to improve. Other countries think they are better than the rest and they are just falling behind, because they don´t realize that they also need to improve.
Just a thought.
I think that this sort of inferiority complex can also give rise to two other attitudes:
1) Thinking that there's a good reason you are so far behind, therefore it is useless to even try; you're just going to fail.
2) You are not inferior! You are actually superior! It looks like you are inferior to other people, true, but that is just because they are blinded by their capitalist, imperialist passions.
The latter is not all that common in Spain, although it is not hard to find people in Madrid who think like that. The former is very common, and has been since before I was born; certainly during my entire life.
There is now tension between groups of people who advocate Extrematurensis' view, and the people who advocate the ones I have epxlained. Mr. Gallardón obviously advocates improving Madrid as much as possible, and he has many supporters, but the rest of the people criticize him very harshly, claiming that he is only flushing money down the drain (or into his pockets).
We will have to see which if the competing ideals wins in the end, and I am sure that the success of this project will play a big part in that.

The deal for the sale fo the Calderon is not yet made; in fact, that particular part of the project is paralized right now, and the cars that use the M30 will use the current track to drive through that part of the highway.
The team is expected to play its games in the Peineta until their new stadium (which will be built further away from the center of Madrid, in a less expensive piece of land) is complete. The difference between what they get from the sale and what they spend on the new stadium will be used to pay the team's debt.
Since the price of the land the stadium stands on is so high, the Local Government will sell about half of the acquired land to developers, in order to offset the cost of the land while still leaving enough space to dig the tunnels and build a park.
So, it seems, there is no way to save your beloved stadium. Look not, however, to the past, and cast instead your gaze toward the bright future that awaits the Team in its new home!

Great video! Most of the M30 is underground, right? Madrid motorways system is the best of any agglomeration in Europe, or even the world.
I think this video is made on the southwest side of Madrid? I saw Badajoz on the signs.

Not all of it; in fact, not even most of it. The M30 is pretty long, as a matter of fact.
They have buried about 12km on the west side, added two tunnels about 4km long each to the south side, buried several kilometers of the A5 highway (the one that goes to Badajoz), buried about 1 or 2km on the North, and they've also done all sorts of works on the intersections between the M30 and the outgoing highways.
In my opinion, there is still a lot of work left to be done, but they'll probably have to stop and catch their breath. :)

450 million euros costed one the two by-pass tunnels (7:30-5:05 in the video). The entire stretch showed in the video costed ~1.5 billion euros, but that figure also includes the tunnels for the opposite direction :omg: .

Bump
How's the progress on the northern side? (Avenida de Illustración). Some project maps show a tunnel there, but it's not completed according to Google Earth.
GE recently updated it's imagery, and you can see the works on the west side is pretty much done. (how they did that so fast is beyond me).
