Two International Finance Center
Hong Kong, China
HEIHGT: 412 meters/1,352 feet
FLOORS: 88 floors
COMPLETION: 2003
ARCHITECT: Cesar Pelli & Associates Architects
World-renowned architect Cesar Pelli was selected to design Two International Finance Center after winning an international design competition. In the tradition of true skyscrapers, the design of Two International Finance Center is simple, strong and memorable. A great obelisk in the scale of the city and the harbor, it culminates in a sculptural crown that celebrates the height of the tower reaching to the sky. The top of Two International Finance Center was designed as a welcoming gesture to the city, and when lit at night it is a shimmering beacon by Victoria Harbor.
Two International Finance Center represents a new generation of office buildings. The building provides approximately two million sq ft of prime office accommodation with an average floor plate in excess of 23,000 sq ft. *Built to cater to the rigorous requirements of professional and financial companies, a virtually column-free floor plate features a 15-metre core wall to window depth, ensuring efficient use of space. Raised floor access, for more flexible cabling management, is available throughout the building. There are also 22 specifically designed trading floors, with a ceiling height from raised floor to suspended ceiling of 3.3 meters.
The building offers advanced passenger and service lift systems, flexible air-conditioning and a dual power supply, complemented by a comprehensive communications and information technology infrastructure.

7.5/10 - THe facade really dances with the light, and I like the fresh blue color; the slim, white mullions and spandrels provide contrast, and the indentations make the shape livelier. It's also slim enough to have really good, soaring height, and this is helped by the small set backs.
HOWEVER...I deducted at least a point for the way the tower curves inward towards the roof; that, along with whatever is on the roof, gives the top section of an otherwise crisp and elegant tower a creepy, almost organic feel - like the mouth of a worm or eel - and the metal spikes on the roof, if that's what they are, look like teeth **ugghh!**

8/10...I like everything but the top. The facade is nice and shiny, and as Liz L said plays very well with the light. The white stripes going up add a nice twist to the building.

Wow! I've got a picture of this underconstruction, when my sister went to Hong Kong last year.
What a building!
Apart from resembling a huge set of male genitals in this pic:
http://www.student.math.uwaterloo.ca/~j3fung/hkg/2ifc/07.jpg
its a beautiful building. It really does look new and shiny!
Very tall, beautiful shiny exterior and another gem in the middle of one of the greatest skylines in the world!!

I don't like the 2ifc being built in HK island, it does not match others. But it would look good if it builds with Union Square 7 in Kowloon. IMO

what can one say?...another Pelli masterpiece!...it looks incredible in the HK skyline and I do like the way the top tapers instead of a flat roof which would have been reminiscent of the former WTC....one of my favorite skyscrapers in the world right now.....10/10!

8.5 - Just cuz it dwarfs everything else in the skyline. In some pics it looks surreal because it's so tall. It will compliment it's bigger brother - US7 - on the other side of the harbor well when it's done. :)

May 9th, 2003, 01:13 AM
It lacks character because of the weak rounded aspects and vague top-end, giving the impression of a rather one-dimensional concept and predictable (over-cautious and bland) design. What remains is the height ---> but the building doesn't do anything with thàt......except reaching it.
I rated it 4.5

Yeah, at least it's better than looking like a giant vagina. LOL:D :D :D
No seriously, the thing I don't like about it is the sharp edges around the building when the building gets progressively smaller towad the top. I like it better if it's smoother like a bullet. I also think the facade and the base could be better.

Fantastic in height, really bland and uninspiring in design. Not sure exactly why I haven't warmed up to this tower other than I find it mundane overall.
A rather "dull" new tallest for a city as magnificent as HK. Shame on Pelli IMO.

July 28th, 2003, 02:39 PM
It's a little too sterile and "perfect" looking for my taste. Pelli sure knows how to design perfectly symetrical buildings. The height is definitely on its side, though. Anything that tall is just jaw dropping. And i must say it goes well with the skyline. Can't wait to see US7 rise on the other side of the harbour. Doing some math i just figured each floor is like 15 feet tall. Man thats massive. Why so much room?
Overall an 8/10

Its interesting you pointed that out, especially about the height. Take a look at its shorter cousin, 1IFC (to the right):

Nice and elegant building. Really tall and slim, and i like the graceful curves, etc. (Somehow though I keep thinking 'graceful and phallic'). Nice color. Adds something grand (like the old granite art deco scrapers) to the HK skyline. However, still a little too plain for my taste, and the design does not quite live up to its promise, in my opinion.

That is my most favorite skyscraper in the world. It's height is so cool because it dwarfs every single skyscraper in Hong Kong and is the perfect height for it's shape and desighn. I just love everything about it because it's perfect in every way. I love it so much that I would mary it if I could!!!

Not many bldgs deserve a 10 IMO but this one does. My 2nd favorite in the world behind the ESB. It's simply INCREDIBLE! Everything works for it. It's perfect and then u get to the top...... and then it gets even better. I love the claw-like organic top. It's menacing but in a good way.
****Dream of a gothic penthouse apartment w/glass atrium-like roof where all u see when u look up is the sky and those gigantic claws :)

This building sux. 5/10, but only because its tall - REALLY tall.
Firstly, it looks like a giant you-know-what. So much so that you've gotta wonder if the architects were having us on designing it like that.
Secondly, its too white. The other tall buildings in HK use a lot of colour, bluee pane glass in particular, so a white building just looks out of place.
Thirdly and finally, its just too tall. It stands out too much with its height from the other skyscrapers in HK, and makes the rest of the city look rather short. In other words, it took the perspective off the existing skyline. Hopefully the new building across the harbour will fix this, but you've gotta wonder.

I don't think it's that great to get such high rankings.
I don't like the black stripes at some points of the cladding, I think it's a bit stretched and oversized, and the lighting is disappointing. Actually I think 1 IFC does a better job of being a nice-looking building.
Well, the finns look nice, and the glass is good as well.
Includes a bonus for the amazing height.

I've liked this tower since I first saw it. It's enormous but not bulky. It looks stunning but very natural against the skyline. I agree that the top can be seen as kinda creepy, but for some reason I like it anyway. Of all the towers in HK this one has among the most affecting visual presences.

Tom Green, 2ifc doesn't look tall coz the buildings around it are generally way too tall in international standard (normal in HK). Your brain percept the height of this building by comparing it with the surrounding (the height of other buildings). Since they are relatively close in height. It has an illusion that 2ifc is short.

Your brain percept the height of this building by comparing it with the surrounding (the height of other buildings). Since they are relatively close in height. It has an illusion that 2ifc is short.
I don`t think this is the reason. I would say it is the facade and the shape of the building that don`t make you believe it is the 6th tallest building in the world.
I have seen the Frauenkirche in Munich. The church is only 100m tall but if you stand close to this building you get impressed by the high. So only the shape and the facade of the 2 IFC make you believe this building is not so tall.

For the church example, i think the width to height ratio also would give you a lot of illusion. Church usually has shape like cone. (not circular base of course), so it give you illusion that the tip is way higher than it actually is when you view it from the bottom.

A 10 for the most aesthetically pleasing building in the world at the moment. I don't think it looks like a schlong at all.

It's got the height, location and enough glass. What more can I say but a perfect 10.
