The ancient city of Zeugma "ζεύγμα", (Seleukeia of Euphrates in Hellenic Ages) was foundet by Seleucus I, Nicator, one of the generals of the Alexander the Great and it is (was) very famous for its great hellenic mosaics.
Unfortunately the city of Zeugma does not longer exists. In 2000 the city was flooded by water after the start-up of the new Birecik Dam build by the turkish government as part of an energie concept.
The Ministry for Culture didnt invest money for the resque of the mosaics.
On 7. May 2000 David Packard Jr. (after reading about it in the New York Tmes) charged the Oxford Archaeological Unit, italian experts and a teqam from france for the resque of a part of the mosaics with a budget of 5 million dollars. Then the ancient city was floodet and destroyed. People call it the "Pompeji the Second". The mosaics can be seen in the museum of Gaziantep.
