Really messy signs in Austria...

I must say, some German Autobahnen through Hamburg, Ruhr, Berlin, Frankfurt are quite impressive.

And ofcourse, we have our motorways around Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Well, this is the A28 running through my hometown.

http://www.roadpics.net/A28/A28Z/30.jpg

http://www.roadpics.net/A28/A28Z/31.jpg

One of the Netherlands most busy motorway with only 2x2 real lanes. That extra lane on the left is VERY narrow, and closed often, wouldn't count that a real lane... :(

David, what happened to your signature? :D

True, but it can hardly be better, because of Vienna's position. You have to list all those cities, such as Prague, Brno, Bratislava, Budapest, Graz and Linz, then don't forget about all those country codes (CZ, SK, H, SLO, I, D:nuts:) and you have to write parts of Vienna of course (like center definitely) plus road numbers.

Anyway, here are pictures of the Ljubljana Motorway Ring (Slovenia):http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/4213/malencev16hq.jpg

Unfortunately true. I never really noticed, as I hardly ever need to look at the signs but I feel that they spoiled me a little. I sometimes get lost in other countries (Italy mostly) because I expect more information. So while it might be helpful for visitors, it's not beneficial for Austrians abroad who easily get confused.

This is your first post in a year and a half?:D Ok, here you go: go to some picture-uploading site, like Imageshack (http://imageshack.us/) and choose firstly, if you wanna upload a file or url (if it's file, continue with "Browse..."), when you're done with this, click "host it!", and then just copy one of those hotlinks (I choose "Hotlink for forums (1)") and paste it in your post on SSC. It's awful, but it's necessary. It's the main (and only) east-west connection in Genoa.

Kiev30, to sum it up, neither of your pictures depicts a motorway.

Kiev30, you see, my friend, this topic is about city motorways. On a motorway there are no bus stops, no parking, no sidewalks, and no one-level crossings. Only a few of your pictures show actual motorways, and the rest - just ordinary city streets.

You asked me where I live. Right now I live in California, but originally I am from Königsberg. However, I have driven through Kiev numerous times, so I know my ways around that city quite well. The only road within the city limits that distantly reminded me the motorway was Проспект Бажана that ran from the South Bridge to the Borispol Motorway. And still, it had bus stops and sidewalks.

I wouldn't say so. While it is true that few people owned cars back in the USSR, the driving tests were still very hard to pass. Still, Soviet licensed drivers were very undisciplined. I knew a man who had 40+ years of driving experience in Russia, and let me tell you - he was aweful. The reason for him being a bad driver was not due to his lack of knowledge of traffic laws, but he just didn't give a damn about them.

Paris signage is way too messy. There is way too much information on those signs, and actually almost no sign is out of 1 part, mostly out of 2 or 3 parts. Signage on intercity Autoroutes is okay, but not near cities if you ask my opinion.

Yes, that's true. While the idea of separating autoroute/extra urban/urban information on autoroute signs using different colours is good, the implementation doesn't look quite as good. Three different colours on a single sign is a bit overkill.

Specifically, you are near El Cerrito, the sign to the left of your first picture is of the Pacific East Mall, a predominantly Asian "shopping center" of about 20-25 shops (including many restaurants). Heading south, you're about a mile and a half or so from university ave, which is one of the main roads to the famous UC Berkeley!

And yes, one thing that pisses me off about US highway signs is their lack of high-techness as well, as well as being quite dirty. My biggest bug, though, is that they never tell you which direction you are going until you are very close!

so wierd that same highway in San Francisco is the same one i used to enter New York...

It's not weird at all! The I-80 runs all the way from San Francisco (at the Bay Bridge) through Oakland, Salt Lake City, Des Moines, Chicago, Cleveland, and eventually NYC! So if you ever need to drive from NYC to SF, you only need to take one road :)

^^ Cool photos!:)

That motorway in Berlin with building on it is really extraordinary! And this picture looks somehow unusual to me.:)http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c4/Berlin_A113_Ausfahrt_Stubenrauchstra%C3%9Fe.jpg/800px-Berlin_A113_Ausfahrt_Stubenrauchstra%C3%9Fe.jpg

^^^ That is the A113.

Those Melbourne pics are really cool. But Australian signage will never be my favourite, although it's not really bad, like they've got in the UK.

To the guy who posted the Melbourne pics...it's interesting how your road signs are like a hybrid of US / British road signs. Sorry to be a geek, but I find that fascinating. Your roads look like US roads, but your signs are more like UK signs. Is there any reason for this, or is it just one of those things?

And yes, one thing that pisses me off about US highway signs is their lack of high-techness as well, as well as being quite dirty. My biggest bug, though, is that they never tell you which direction you are going until you are very close!

Yeah, but that's just California signage. Caltrans (the state transportation department) specifically uses old-school signage, for whatever reason, I do not know. I know that in Texas (where I am from), there are reflective highway signs, variable message boards, and all sorts of other things that you would find in most other countries (except variable speed limits, like anyone follows the speed limit in the first place!).

Well, being from Houston, I figure I should put some pictures of our best urban freeway, the brand-new U.S. 59 trench. (Still under construction when taken)

No this is a pic of the new A113 in Southeastern Berlin. The AVUS is in Southwestern Berlin, and MUCH older, i thought it was one of the oldest in the world. :)

Well there were some motorways in early stages between Frankfurt and Darmstadt, and near Milano, Italy. I don't know how old that one exactly is.

Our oldest motorway dates back from 1936.:)

AFAIK the one near Milan (the currently 8-km 8-lane stretch of the A8 motorway between A4 and A9; sounds fuckin complicated:D) is the oldest PUBLIC motorway in the world (because AVUS was at first reserved only for Hitler and the likes:D), I think from 1924, and it's also the world's oldest toll-motorway AFAIK. Btw, I hate that toll, on only 8-km stretch, in the middle of it.:bash:

I heard that that A8 Autostrada, was first a single lane carriageway. It wasn't a real motorway, as we know now.

Not a picture but a video of wellington highway/motorway. Starting at ngauranga gorge which isn't classified motorway because it has a footpath (I dunno whos nuts enough to use it) and a left in left out road. It is a section of non motorway between two motorways but unless you're really looking carefully you wouldn't realise why its not classified motorway.

Then onto the wellington urban motorway, where state highways 1 and 2 merge.

I read some more about this "motorway", and i can say you; it wasn't a motorway. It was a 2+2 road, with no acces controlled intersections, just grade crossings, and there was no barrier between the lanes.

Small details...:D Where did you read it? I wasn't looking around much, but I remembered this (http://home.no.net/lotsberg/data/italia/auto-it-cr.html) site. And here (http://home.no.net/lotsberg/data/italia/autostrade.html) it says by the A08 that it was the first toll motorway in the world (actually all 42.6 km were allegedly opened at once).

New Zealand motorways look very much like American ones. If it was not for the left-sided traffic and tall residential flats along the road, I could easily confuse it with some California coastal highway. Oh, and the road marking is closer to European than American.

NZ motorways are a question of getting used to. If you don't pay attention, you're off the motorway sooner than you want. There are not only ordinary exits with dedicated lanes, it also happens that the main lanes simply lead you to an exit. happened to me and my family twice between AKL and the CBD...
