View Full Version : :ohno: let's re~negotiate the skybar name?

Let me start of by saying I'm happy that the LA Forum has a Skybar. The only thing is I'm not feeling the chosen name "The Interchange". Do we actually keep this name or ask for it to be change for something different. Not stirring up a controversial thread and stepping on each others toes. I'm not asking for new names just for it to be reconsider by the Mods.
Sorry fellows I try to do a poll but I guess my 5min posting period was over. Since it's taking sooooo long to upload. So basically can I get everyones participation with:
Soooo Happening: you do like the new Skybar name*
Soooo not happening: you don not like the Skybar name*
Mods can you remove ":ohno: from the the heading. It would be much appreciated!

I think it's okay. Though I wouldn't mind renaming the skybar. If we are going to rename it, the new name should reflect LA's culture.

I think it's a fine name.

I already did twice and I keep getting error 500 and it's annoying!
But I will retry, once again.....
I can't believe BAZ actually likes the name Interchange, Yikes!!

The interchange! It's one thing LA is a goddess at, I love the same it's so LA. What's so wrong with it?, it symbolizes LA to the fullest.

^^ Sorry I don't see your vision there. Every city in the United States that has Freeways/Toll Roads would problaly have an interchange as well. So I don't see how it makes that soooooooo L.A.?

It's SOOOOOOOOO LA! I love the name. Hey, LA is still thought of as the car capital of the world. And I think it still is. It will always be. Even when it has the most extensive light rail system on the planet. It will be known for the birthplace of car culture. C'mon, why are Angelenos so obsessed with their cars? It means a lot! Keep the name...luv it

I personally don't have a problem with it, but I can see why I'm not totally going bonkers over it and I can understand why someone like Ferney detests the name so much that he devotes an entire thread to trying to have it changed.
I think there's a negative connotation underlying the skybar name "The Interchange" that the SSC moderators don't see or are just ambivalent to. Basically, what we are saying to the SSC moderators by allowing this name is "Hey its okay to stereotype and ridicule Los Angeles as nothing but this giant, amorphous freeway system!!". No offense to the SSC moderators, but are we all so myopic to NOT see that there's more to this dynamic metropolis than its freeway system? Must we continue to promote a negative stereotype, in spite of the city making tremendous strides in building a world class public transit system the last 15-17 years?
Anyone who has been around SSC long enough, will remember the City vs. City days when LA was singled out and made the butt of jokes (whether it was warranted or not) by every troll and his/her brother and Uncle--often times deriding LA over and over as "nothing but a giant freeway"..which of course any savvy urbanist would know is totally untrue and is a bunch of facetious mumbo jumbo!!! The anti-LA vibe here was so overwhelming at times, we'd be lucky if we had only 5 trolls coming in here and bashing the city on any given day--armed with nothing empirical to back up what they spewed but outright ignorance and malice intended to lambaste a city which they don't understand. So are we reverting back to the dark, shameful days of City Vs. City or are we just gonna stand by with one blind eye?
Also, Interchanges are just really NOTHING unique to LA or its culture at all! Since cities all over the world have interchanges, it is nothing that sticks out in the mind to your average Joe Shmoes of the world as anything truly unique to the "City of Angels"---Heck! if we're gonna use LA's so-called "Car Culture" as a premise in naming the skybar..why not just call it "The Sunset Strip" instead? I would accept the Sunset Strip much easily, since it actually defines a part of LA in both the geographical and mythical sense; As glorified in the movies, tv shows, commercials, songs, books, music videos--often depicting the heavily clogged, auto-oriented strip as this must-see/do "LA experience" when visiting LA.
IMO, there is nothing more quintessentially LA or defines its so-called "Car Culture" better than actually getting behind the wheel and cruising the strip first-hand. There's something magnetic about the Sunset Strip, where the act of driving actually feels fun and pleasurable...Whether you are trying to re-live a scene from the movie 'LA Story' or just cruising along in your car (preferably a convertible) and seeing thousands of headlights beaming , bedazzling the night sky in every direction in bumper-to-bumper traffic..billboards, neon lights and palm trees thrusting along its curves... the sight of the plush, verdant Hollywood Hills towering above (as if beckoning you to come closer and closer as you're driving along Sunset Blvd)...a cacophony of music blaring from its many clubs, bars, and cars on the strip...the feeling of wind rushing through your hair...spotting your favorite celebrity standing outside of the Key Club, The Laugh Factory, The Roxy, etc.....Anyone who has ever been to LA and driven along the Sunset Strip can attest to it being, "SO LA!!". Even with that said, LA's car culture is just but ONE facet of a multi-faceted city like Los Angeles. Some of us may obsesss over the traffic on our interchanges or even be enthralled by its freeway car chases, but it doesn't define the heart beat of the city as the Sunset Strip truly does.

Hahaha! Ferney to think that you used to love freeways  Did the pro-transit contingent (Klamedia, ELSONGS, Damien, etc.) finally convinced you? hahaha Well, whatever they did..I must congratulate them for a superb job brain-washing you! hahaha j/k
Good to see you are abandoning the "Dark Side" (freeways) and beginning to see the "Light" (Rail transit)..Haha!!

It's not my first choice but I can live with it.
The 7th/Metro Center station in Downtown where the Red and Blue Lines meet is another example of an interchange...a transit interchange. Same for the North Hollywood Station, Imperial/Wilmington Station and Union Station, the mother of all transit interchanges.
The Four-Level, the East LA Interchange, etc are *freeway* interchanges.
I did propose the name "Angels Flight" which, in addition to the railway, is the name of an *actual* skybar (as in a place to enjoy drinks while enjoying a view of the skyline atop a building) located atop the Hyatt Regency hotel in Downtown.

"Futuretrance" makes a good point. The "Interchange" does lead one to think of freeway interchanges, it being LA and all. Perhaps this name should be changed.

I don't think many outsiders even know what an interchange is...If they come for a city with few or no freeways, it's pretty much a foreign term for them.

Personally, I think the double entendre is clever.
