Polish motorways are nice. I heard that A4 is repaired too (i was on that road when it was damaged (2004). Kryzyzowa - Wroclaw).

But, i have a few questions;

Is there any certainty about the A2 through Warszawa, and east of Warszawa to Brest?
Will there be an A6 from Szczecin to Gdansk or Kaliningrad?

And why for the love of god do they sign tiny places 600 kilometers away near borders? :nuts: :bash:

S it's "almost" motorway: for example lane is narrower (3,5 meters; A-3,75 m., etc.)

Probably A2 to the German border will be in 2010 :(

Korczowa is the place where is planned a cross border

There is no one in the world who knows that place. No one probably ever wants to go there. Signage is ment for people who are not well-known to the where the road-system will lead you.

So this sign should mention Lviv, not Korczowa.
Also in the other direction: don't mention little nearly uninhabited places near the German border, but mention Berlin or Dresden, from the time you pass a focal city like Wroclav or Poznan.

There are many motorways in Poland never completed. One of them is "Olimpijka", a planned motorway from the Eastern to the Western boarder, whose completion was originally planned for the Olympic Games in 1980 in Moscow, but which was never completed.

Construction start of other incomplete motorways was already done before World War II, as these areas were still part of Germany. For example, there are incomplete motorway sections between Szczecin and Elblag.
What is the actual state of motorway between Elblag and Kaliningrad, which was built by the German's between 1933 and 1935?

Show us some pictures of devasted and uncomplete motorways in Poland!

No reason to get excited about the Polish motorways, we are dozens of years behind all well-developed countries. Driving in Poland has always been a pain in the ass. It is getting better nowadays, the newly completed motorways look quite OK but we must not forget they are hardly a few years old (on the other hand what's the big deal with a toll two-lane motorway, come on, maybe it would be something worth mentioning if it was for completely for free). Let's wait and see how they will look like in the years to come. We should not also forget how long it takes here to get the work done, come on, is it really that hard to build 2 or 3 complete motorways in a predominantly flat country with reasonably mild climate? Why does it take so long to launch the A1 construction? Polish motorways are not quite a reason to be happy, it is rather a proof how painfully slow the things can be dealt with over here. Fine to have a few finished routed but we need many more kms and fast!

Yes, it is pssible. "Motorway" beetween Elbląg and Kaliningrad is national road 22 and it is now in rebuiliding to S22 (expressway). We can also drive on "Berlinka" which is motorway A6 in rebuilding too. The "Olimpijka" has never been completed so we can't experience drive on it. (sorry for my bad english)

I am from Swinoujscie, so driving between Swinoujscie and Szczecin which is a nice experience nowdays. Just before Szczecin. the two lane road divides into a strange highway. The signs are marked as B class highway, but it got 4 lanes ( 2 on each side), though there are same level crossings though. Then it connects with another road and you can really feel the German worldwarii highway blocks bumping your car to every angle :)

Some parts of this road between Swinoujscie and Szczecin have been improoved offcourse. New bridges and stuff.

Generaly most of roads are in preparing right now, are designed with that space, for example -7m (2x3,5m) for future lanes +4m of regular space and it gives 11meters for now, Iam talking about expresways and motorways as well -2x2 with lefted space for future 2x3,

In Italy some highway's stretches have been built with this system: e.g. the branch from Modena to Verona of 'Brennero highway' (A22) built in '70s I think
Unfortunately traffic on that highway increased to a congestion level since 20 years at least, but they didn't build the 3d lane yet even if they left the space just to make it easier

Just recently they decided to upgrade the highway to a 3 lanes one :bash:

here is a link to the Polish Russian Border and it shows what was a German Autobahn from the 1930's. There is only one carriageway left. You can follow it all the way to Kallingrad (Königsberg) in Russia. I think it's crazy. It's got loads of private access onto it now and normal T junctions.

There are few motorways under construction right now. The last part of A4 towards the border with Germany (50 km), A4 from Krakow to Szarów (20km ) , A1 from Gdansk to Grudziadz (90km) , A1 Sosnica - Belk (15.5 km)

Few more are under bidding right now. But it's just not enough. It's going way to slow :(

It looks like it to me. Heck, I'd love to see the Polish highway guys finish the rest of the old already-blazed and partially built WWII-era route grade between Gdansk and Szczecin. From what I can tell, most of it still exists or can be easily traced.

I love following these old routes. :)

Now - if we can get the Russians to upgrade their section and install a border crossing, with perhaps a further extension of it towards the Baltic states....

Nah, mate. I myself am an Ostpreußen native, and knowing how Russian government works, I don't believe it could be done in the foreseeable future :ohno: When Russians took this area from Germany, they did not invest in infrastructure at all except military infrastructure. On that time, there was no need to continue building Berlinka because of the Iron Curtain, and now the government either doesn't have money or desire to do so although it would greatly benefit the economical development of the region.

There is a border crossing Grzechotki (PL) - Mamonowo II (RUS), AFAIK the biggest border crossing between Poland and Russia. Thanks to PHARE funds it was developed recently. The S22 expressway is part of Ia TEN-T corridor, so called Via Baltica, which connects Gdańsk, Kaliningrad, Riga and Tallin. The russian part must be upgraded, in other case it cause isolation of Kaliningrad and Baltic states.

I checked Warszawa yesterday on Google Earth, and i found a surprisingly good road network. Most roads are at least 2 lanes per direction, and a lot of 2-levelcrossings.

As of now, whole northern stretch had been completed. Now, the remaaining - the southern roadway is waiting

Both sides are open for traffic, eastband roadway is in projecting phase and planned for construction next year.

The distances between junctions/interchanges are related to safety rules and sign distances. For example there is a minimal distance between two gantry signs, what is related to velocity and perception of drivers.
Sometimes the distance between two interchanges is shorter than these mentioned above. If the distance is longer than the exceptional distance mentioned above we have to obtain a permission to desing such interchanges. If the distance is shorter than the exceptional distance mentioned above we have to design so called "group of interchanges" or "joint interchange". Group of interchanges looks like, for example interchange of E22 and Jan van Galenstraat, interchange of E22 and S104 (Bos en Lommerweg) and interchange of E22 and N200 (Haarlemmerweg) in Amsterdam. Joint interchange looks like E22/A8/A10/S118 (Verlengde Stellingweg) interchange or E35/A9/Meibergdreef interchange, also in Amsterdam.

I like Polish roads. Especially when you are entering Poland from Russia :lol: It is too bad Poland doesn't have a good motorway network yet, but the local roads are in nearly perfect conditions. Polish drivers, however, want to drive fast on them (because of the absence of motorways, I guess), so sometimes they drive a bit recklessly. Also, all those local roads run through numerous towns and it slows traffic significantly.

Don´t worry. You´ve got plenty of time. Croatia built 350 km of A1 motorway in just 3 years. It was very difficult terrain with many tunnels, viaducts and bridges. You have Euro 2012 boost now. I have no doubt in your success.:cheers:

Many of us are very sceptic about these plans, we figure that 5 years is not enough to build as many motorways and expressways as our government claims to. The problem is not just the period of building roads but all the necessary procedures from feasibility study, community consultations, environmental decision, building project up to tender submission - All these things may take up to 5 years if we are lucky. In most cases we are somewhere half way to start building all these necessary roads. If our government does not enhance some regulations to speed up these processes than there will not be a damn chance to finish all planned roads on time which is spring 2012.

I agree with you. Condition of polish roads has much been improved and motorways too. For example A4 from Golnice to Wroclaw has new toplayer and A4 from Katowice to Krakow is modernizing. A6 is also renewing now. Is that true the A1 motorway, the first 25 kilometres from Gdansk(Rusocin) to
junction with DK 22 in Swarozyn will be open in 09/2007 ?

The DK1? (Bielsko-Biala - Katowice) looks like a 2x2 ordinary road to me on the map. It should be replaced by a new S1 in the next 5 years or so...

As far as i know, expressways have a bit smaller lanes and narrow emergency lanes, and a speed limit of 110km/h, and some more junctions etc. But in fact it should be a motorway-grade road, in other countries it would go for a motorway.
I think you can compare it to the French Voie Expresses, or the German Gelbe Autobahnen, or the Czech rychlostní silnice, or the Italian Superstradas.

Hehe. Expressways are cheaper, and more important; easier to build. You don't have to follow the extreme procedures of the EU to build a motorway. Like in the Netherlands, where they are trying to build a road, takes up to 10 years before construction actually starts.
So Polish government won't wait that long (damn right they are). Maybe some Drogowa Ekspresowa's (Expressways) will be up to motorway standards later.

^^Well, probably the geometry of the expressways is not as good as that of motorways. And that's not easy to fix, so if they want to upgrade them later, they better build them with good geometry feature.

But thinking about it, poland is mainly flat, so it shouldn't be difficult to build roads with good geometry.

One very interesting thing .... no matter what kind of road it will get, you see every little village with just a few inhabitans will have it´s own exit.

I think there is a big misconception or misunderstanding here. Polish expressways would most likely be classified as full blown highways outside of Poland. They are indeed very good. To a casual driver there isn't really much difference except for rest areas and call boxes which are more prominent on highways (toll ones). The plan calls for close to 5000km of expressways and highways.

I can see what it says almost from this position, Mercedes-benz etc... That should certainly be no problem when you drive next to it. It can't be much closer to the road anyways because it's right next to a steep slope.

Weird since in Poland there isn't much published about the Netherlands. It's usually about drugs or euthanasia and that's about it.

I would respond by saying that in order not to be a "3rd world" country Poland needs highways for accomodating traffic and spurring investments. We need to catch up after 50+ years of communist fiasco of managed economy that basically ruined Poland.

As far as "kicking Polish people out of Netherlands" I am not sure how this plays into the argument but it could be very dangerous. It doesn't take much to fan the flame in Poland and the Dutch farmers living and working in Poland could quickly be on the receiving end of it.

Really sad, there was some news about the Rospuda valley highway construction on a Dutch site, and the comments where about to cry.

Lot's of people says stuff like; "kick that 3rd world country of the EU", "why do they need motorways, there aren't even cars in Poland!", "Kick all Polish people out of the Netherlands" etc etc.

Really too bad. I don't know why exactly, but there is an extremely negative atmosphere against Poland here :bash: :ohno:
The reasons might be attitude of polish goverment run by The Kaczinski bros. , towards UE, and their poor diplomatic skills.

As for the negative comments mentioned, they're probably made mostly by 14-year-olds with no sense of how to behave. That said, the Kazcynskis are also behaving like immature teenagers, so any negative attitudes towards them is well deserved. Motorways are a vital part of infrastructure, which is a vital part of the economy, and they need to be built, but not at any cost, and if the ECJ says the construction has to stop, it has to stop. It has got nothing to do with Kaczynscy, If you asked a typical Dutchman who was a president of Poland, they even wouldn't know. All they know is their stereotypic opinion of Eastern Europeans. Regardless of the fact who is a president, their opinion would never change due to a lack of knowledge and prejudice. If you get into a conversation with well-educated Dutch person who has some constructive approach to the matter, you would easily notice that this opinion differs from other stereotypic, and as a matter of fact is much more objective and true without any sign of prejudice.

As far as I know most immigrants went to Britain because the British pound is very strong. Most went between the years of 2004 and 2006 when Poland recorded unemployment anywhere from 19 to 16%. So it was caused by 2 things - strong currency and lack of opportunities at home.

Things have changed. The unemployment in Poland at the end of this year will be 10% and considering that some people work on the black market never paying into the system the real unemployment will probably be around 8%.

Salaries in Poland have always been high compared to other CE countries. For the past two years they have soared. Today average salary is 1100$ per month and is expected to raise by another 10% by the end of the year. Take home pay is 800$ as taxes are low. That's half of EU salary, 60-70% of take home pay and considering PPP (purchasing power parity) about 65% of EU average wealth. So the gap isn't that great.

Most immigrants are very skilled, majority (90%) are under 35 years of age and hold university degrees (bachleros, masters or PHDs). Others are experts in their respective fields such as engineering or construction.

Even though something like 15 countries are open for legal employment I don't see many Poles opting for Sweden, Finland, Spain or other countries. Taxes are high, opportunities are scarce.

How does this relate to the Mexican example where Mexicans have been immigrating to the US steadily for over 40 years, majority of them are uneducated and come from areas where even basic services are not offered. Average salary there is 250$ and compared to the standard US salary is 10-15TIMES smaller.

The case of Poland is a typical brain drain. In 2 years time most of these students after acquiring new skills and some money will be back home. It's already happening. Meanwhile 2.5 million foreigners work in Poland and nobody has any problems with it.

That's a good laugh.

No, our media sets things in only one light. Like there have to be a motorway widened, they let a pro-guy say three words about it, and then a complete interview with some environmentalist complaining about air quality and other stuff.

It's not that they tell lies, but they only view it from one side, the side they like it to be seen. There are actually very few rightwing or even center media, and if they write something, the other media always says it's bullshit because some rightwing newspaper wrote it.

So don't pay much attention to Dutch media...

Yes, we sign Ukrainian cities. Especially Lwów (Lviv). Its name is written on all signs from Rzeszów to the border.

I live in Sanok (Podkarpacie) and on our signs is Sambor.

^^ What he said, basically. This isn't 1985 (which is a long time ago by European standards). While I'm no expert on Mexico-US relations and the immigration "problem" there, the images that come to mind are those of droves of people sneaking in illegally by crossing deserts and border fences and other not-so-safe ways, and that's more comparable to Africa->Europe migration IMO (which is probably even worse, it's rightly been called "Europe's shame"). That's not to say anything bad about Mexico or Africa, the difference is mostly one of trust and access and not differences.

I don't get it...Driving fast on an autobahn is tolerated but driving fast on a Polish motorway(that might be in a better condition) is not. The only difference is that in one place there is a speed limit and in the other there's no speed limit. Driving 200km/h shouldn't be tolerated anywhere else than on a race track, IMO.
