A couple of my favourite vista points in LA:
Griffith Park- Views of Hollywood Sign, downtown, and the park itself is very scenic. You just need reservations to get up to the observatory.
End of Beechwood Dr.- In Hollywood, follow Beechwood Dr. north from Franklin Ave. until it dead ends. Beautiful homes and this is as close as you can get to the Hollywood sign in a car, a walking trail leads from the car park at the end to behind the sign. Good views of downtown and the San Fernando Valley.
Mulholland Dr.- This is a classic drive between Cahuenga and Laurel Canyon. Huge homes and views of downtown, Hollywood, and San Fernando Valley.
Mt. San Vicente- Follow Mulholland Rd. west from the 405 near the Skirball Centre and follow about 4 miles to where Mulholland is gated off (it becomes a rough, steep dirt road about a mile prior). Old military observation deck (for looking for incoming planes and missiles). Almost 360 views of the San Fernando Valley, Malibu, Santa Monica, Palos Verdes, and downtown. Really interesting relic from the Cold War as well.
Signal Hill- In Long Beach near Cherry and Willow. Good views over Long Beach and all the way (on a clear day) to LA, Catalina Island, and the San Gabriel Mountains.
Mt. Wilson- Follow the 2 (Angeles Crest Hwy.) from the 210 and head into the mountains. Follow approx. 15 miles to the Mt. Wilson turnoff and follow that road to the observatory. Stunning views overlooking all of LA, Orange County, Catalina, and almost all the way to San Diego. Takes about 40 minutes from downtown with good traffic, but worth the drive. Closed at night though and can be very cold even on warmer days in LA, brrr!!!!
Hope this helps; have fun!

If someone sets up the sticky, I will contribute. I have already posted a lot of stuff in the "Show us your suburbs" thread in the USA forum.

SVS, start the thread, name it something like "The Ultimate LA Tour for Outsiders" or along those lines and ill sticky it. Try to separate LA City from the IE and the OC and other Suburbs. you always do a good job!

I will contribute but please be specific about what LA the city is and what LA the county is so that people visiting will have an easier time digesting it all. Also promote pub trans where possible. I will contribute one of the Silver Lake/Los Feliz/Hollywood/Echo Park section since I live here.
