I have to ventilate a bit. I'm really get sick of the low lifes that go out every night with the one goal of defacing our city. When you drive down the 405 EVERY overpass has shit on it, and EVERY soundwall has shit on it. In fact, at Slauson they are building a new soundwall, and it is getting tagged while it is being built! This morning on the way to work I saw that some ass last night spray painted a bunch of local business and even tagged a couple residential buildings. The tagging is ugly, unimaginative, and not a soul but the tagger gives two shits about who tags what.
I don't know what can be done to stop this. If a tagger gets caught they should have to spend a god awful amount of time in community service cleaning up spraypaint, and they should have to pay a hefty fine.
Does anyone know of any community service organizations that clean this crap up? I'd love to participate in one and do my part in the war on vandalism.
Personally, I think when taggers get caught they should get this as punishment... ---->:bash:

I totally agree and empathize with everything you said, LAsam...
I think the city needs to make clamping down on these punks a top priority, instead of just giving these punks a slap on the hand, we need to hand out more stringent punishments. Its a crime against every citizen in this city and we should not tolerate it anymore! As bad as it is in this city..can you believe this problem is far more rampant in some other cities I've visited on the East coast? It's a problem certainly not exclusive to L.A. for sure.
What I don't really understand, is how some of these punks can perpetrate these crimes in such highly visible, heavily traveled corridors like the 101, 405, and 5 Freeways. Particularly, on the 101 Freeway; which is busy at nearly all hours of the day/night, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Sometimes I scratch my head wondering to myself, how the heck did these hooligans climb and spray paint some of the over passes (some as high as 50 feet or more) and soundwalls without detection? I know for sure its not the 'Invisible Man' perpertrating these crimes or maybe he is? Haha!! Some of the graffitti along the 101 Freeway near downtown are atrociously huge and complex (requiring lots of time to perpetrate). So there must be witnesses to the vandalism in progress, but they obviously aren't being reported enough times to the proper authorities. Is it apathy or just people feeling powerless that they can't do something about it?
What irks me the most right now, is still seeing the murals along the 101 Freeway near downtown covered with graffitti after all these months after it was defaced. Another thing, you know what's funny? Have you ever driven along the 101 Freeway near downtown and looked up at the walls of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace? The walls look spotless and grafitti-free. I don't think I've ever seen its walls ever covered with grafitti (at least the times I've driven by and looked up). So, do these hooligans actually have a conscience? Haha! Or maybe they're just part-time taggers and secretly devout Catholics full-time? Yeah right! Don't count on it, it's just a matter of time before that gets defaced too I think. LOL!!!
Another thing that perturbs me, is people littering on the streets, parks, and freeways. Don't they understand the consequences that littering might cause? Littering makes the environment an eyesore and it affects our neighborhoods by attracting criminals to it, when they think nobody cares. I think that non-chalant, apathetic, who-cares-its-not-my-neighborhood mentality that some people subscribe too irks me the most. I think instead of turning a blind eye to these crimes, we all need to take a more proactive approach and do our part in reporting vandalism as we see them happen.
There was an incident about 2 months ago, when my girlfriend and I were going to dinner when we witnessed two teenage punks defacing the windows of an Italian delicatessen (which was closed at the time) with white spray paint. Without thinking twice, I stopped my gf's car, rolled down the windows and began to vehemently yell out to them,"Hey! What the hell are you guys doing?"...they glared over at us for a couple of seconds and started partially hiding their faces under their black hooded sweatshirts, acting as if I was totally transparent and continued with their illicit business. I got really angry and did something very crazy. i stepped out of my gf's car and began walking towards them, without hesitation thinking that I was gonna confront them face-to-face. Just as I began to walk towards them, my girlfriend yelled out ,"Stop! Get back in the car!" and cautioned me that they might be carrying guns. Then I stepped back into the car, collected my thoughts and realized how dangerous it was and decided instead to drive to a well lit parking-lot near a coin-laundromat about 150 feet away (which was about close enough to identify them, yet far enough to be safe) and called 911, and the operator hooked me up to the cops as I proceeded to give them a pretty good description of the white spray can toting culprits. Amazingly, there was a police station about 8 blocks away, and the cops arrived in less than five minutes and apprehended the little thugs still in the act . Oh boy! You should've seen the smile on my face. Haha! But, looking back on it, I'm realy glad I listened to my girlfriend as I would not recommend anybody confront these criminals face-to-face. Nowadays, you really never know whether these punks are carrying weapons or not. It's probably better to identify them and let the cops handle it. But I definitely know I can go to sleep at night, knowing that I didn't turn a blind eye to the crime and did my part in combating vandalism.

I saw once a guy scratch tagging a window on the Red Line. Everyone was staring at him, but everyone was scared to act. I got out at Hollywood/Highland, looking back I should have called the cops about it.

It really bothers me because whenever the city or a private company tries to do something nice, these punks ruin it. It makes one ask, why put the money into making a public space look nice when taggers are just going to destroy it within a week?

well, as a police officer explained to me, you wont get charged with anything as long as you stay at the scene. you might get sued, but that is what car insurance is for

Mara Salvatrucha ( MS13 )
http://www.gangwar.com/blog/uploaded_images/ms13-736930.jpg
The gang formed in the Pico Union area of Los Angeles, California. Mexican-American gangs would prey on Salvadorian immigrants who came to the U.S. escaping the El Salvador Civil War. The "devil's head" hand signal, which forms an "M" when displayed upside down, bears remarkable resemblance to the same symbol common in hard rock. The founders copied this symbol they saw on their visits to rock concerts.
Many Mara Salvatrucha gang members from the Los Angeles area have been deported either because of their illegal status in the United States, for committing crimes as a non-citizen, or both. Many have continued their gang activities upon returning to El Salvador.
Back in El Salvador, these deportees have recruited more members, including new members who immigrate illegally to the United States
Mara Salvatrucha is a large gang involved in criminal activities throughout Central and North America. The gang's name is commonly abbreviated as MS-13, Mara, MS, and is composed of mostly , Salvadorans, Hondurans, and Guatemalans. The MS-13 gang has cliques, or factions, located throughout United States, El Salvador, parts of Central America, and in some other parts of the world.
Membership is believed to total over 100,000 worldwide.[2] MS-13 criminal activities include drug smuggling and sales, black market gun sales, human trafficking, assassinations for hire, theft, and assaults on law enforcement officials.[3] Their activities have caught the eye of the FBI, who in September 2005 initiated wide-scale raids against suspected gang members, netting 650 arrests across the country.[4]
Former gang member Brenda Paz said that MS-13 is well structured, with multiple leaders, and that the gang's goal was to become the top gang in the United States

what the...not that I support gang behavior at all!!! believe, i hate them as well, BUT I don't like people associating MS13 with Mexicans...they're not!! (unless you refer to "Mexican" as all people south of the U.S.)
