Partially completed and under construction projects
M0
M0 is the expressway ting around Budapest. It is still not completed, although its construction started in 1988. Currently, the southern section, the southern half of the eastern section and half of the northern section are completed, and the northern half of the eastern section and the other half of northern section are under construction. The completion of the western part is unknown, because it would need very long tunnels and it would cross protected areas, and locals also object it. Currently, 42km is ready, 49,7km is under construction. This year will see the completion of these sections, and will see the beginning of widening works on the southern section to 2x3.

M43
M43 is currently the shortest motorway in Hungary. It is 3 km long, and currently serves only as the bypass of Szeged. The continuation of it was brought sooner in this year, because freight traffic tripled on main road 43 from Romania and Bulgaria after they joined the EU. Construction works on it will start this year, all the way to the border. This short section was inaugurated in 2005,along with the M5 when it reached Szeged.

M7
The M7 motorway is the oldest motorway in Hungary. The first separate section of it (because the section inside Budapest of it is common with the M1’s) was inaugurated in 1966,with half-profile. It was (and still is) important for the country, because this leads to the largest lake in Hungary, the Balaton. It was completed to the lake’s northernmost 1970,half-profile all the way.
The M7 has currently the biggest motorway viaduct in Hungary. It is 1872m long. The only uncompleted sections on it are the Nagykanizsa-Balatonkeresztúr section and 1km on the Croatian border with the Mura-bridge. Currently 204 km is completed out of 242,3km,while the rest is under construction, and the whole motorway will be finished in 2008.
The section Székesfehérvár-M0 has 2+3 lanes,3 going to Budapest.

M8
M8 is also a very short expressway. It was built because there are not very much bridges on the Danube outside Budapest. So it only consists of a bridge, and a few kms of motorway. It was built with the first section of M6. M8 will form a large half-ring in the country that wont touch Budapest. Probable route is Rábafüzes-Veszprém-Dunaújváros-Szolnok.
It is currently 10,2 km long, while it will be 330,2km when it will be finished. The lone bridge was inaugurated in 2007.

It will be 335 km long, with the approximate route of Sopron-Nagykanizsa-Szekszárd-Szeged. This short segment was inaugurated in 2003.

This is the first one just south of Dunaújváros on the planned M8 motorway.
Here are some facts and pictures about the bridge:

If you look at the map I uploaded last you can see a town named Zamardi on the south shore of lake Balaton. After it you can see a little green part on the highway. You can find the viaduct there above a little village named Köröshegy.

M1 Motorway
http://www.aak.hu/SysRes/AAKSkin/shield_m1.gif
The M1 motorway leads from Budapest to the border of Austria, then in Austria it continues as A4 to get you to Wien. The first parts were built in 1964, this is the oldest motorway in Hungary along with M7. Now S1 is built in Austria, which is a bypass that avoids Wien and goes straight to Germany. So basically you can go from Budapest to Düsseldorf or even further only on motorways. The quality of the surface of M1 is top notch, better than A4 in Austria, but it is true for all the Hungarian motorways, they get fixed annually. As for a logistic center for Europe it is inevitable to have good infrastructure that is good in quality.
Okay, so some photos that i found on the net:

Actually Qwert you have quite an eye. The bridge is being built totally the same way the Apollo bridge in Bratislava was. Probably that's the cheapest way at a bridge like this. But the similarity is way beyond any accident. I dont even remember a conducted competition/tender on the blueprints of that bridge. Perhaps someone in our government liked Bratislava's new bridge very much! ;)

The M6 Motorway Project
The M6 Highway Project from Budapest,Érdi Tető to Dunaújváros is the latest finished infrastructure project in Hungary. The construction works of the M6 started in October 2004 and was completly finished by September 2006. M6, the part of Corridor 5c is planned to be finished through Szekszárd and until the boarder town of Ivándárda by 2007.12. Personally I'm not so optimistic about it. There are quite a lot of problems with the development. But that's another story... :ohno: So the M6 highway is part of the 5c Corridor which comes from Kaliningrad, through Vilnius, Minsk, Kiev, Budapest, Osijek, Sarajevo and ends at Ploce, Croatia.
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/4565/corridor5cxo2.jpg
I think Bosmal plans to build the Bosnian part, but I havent't heard anything about that part of the project.
The M6 from a Technical Point of View
The Concession Area of the M6 Project includes the section of the M6 from Érdi Tető to Dunaújváros plus a stretch of the M8 motorway from the motorway interchange with the M6 towards the new Danube bridge south of Dunaújváros. On total these are:
- 58,6 km of motorway
- ten interchanges
- one motorway cross between M6 and the M8
- 60 bridges
- one Operation and Maintenance Centre
- two complex and two simple rest areas in each direction
- numerous side roads
- 15 round abouts, 5 along national road 10 along local roads in order to enable the access to the motorway
Here are some not so entertaining pictures of the M6 Highway:

i must dissapoint you and say Köröshegy is not going to be the longest in this part of Europe, Austrian Krems (2607 m), Scönberg-Matrei (2107) and Croatian Drenik (2485 m) are longer. but Köröshegy is impressive, indeed! I'm really hardly waiting you to finish M7!
there is no many photos from Hungarian motorways on internet, so you could publish some of them, right?!
i didn't know that you are working on M6, it's good! and the large surprise is that it is finished to Dunaújváros allready! btw, Ploče is in Croatia, not Bosnia.
and can someone say what is with toll on M5, is it still working, or it is also under vignette system?

Hu did a great job with extended M5 direct to HU-SRB border crossing, both sides have now a brand new a real full-highway border crossings so it looks very cool :okay: Unfortunately behind the serbian border there is no real highway to Belgrade (just "half" highway) but this will change very soon, in about two weeks we ll know who is gonna to build full highway from HU-Border to Novi Sad, from Novi Sad to BGD about 75% of highways is constructed, rest is U/C right now. (about 70km) (participators are Bouyguess, Strabag, Alpine and one more company i don't know its name).

You don't have to be sorry for me I don't live in Koice. You know from Koice to border it is about 25 km but from Miskolc to border it is about 60 km so it could be reason why. I think Hungary has more important priorities in highways because there isn't expressway between Koice and Warszaw. I know there are some parts of expressway R4 U/C e.g. near Svidník but I don't know what is the current status of this expressway in Poland.

The M0 experssway-highway is a crucial part of the Hungarian highway-system. This belt or beltway connects and will connect the main highways and roads entering and leaving Budapest (M1, M7, M6, M5, M3...). The belt is not finished yet and at some parts its way to old and absolutly doesn't fulfil the needs or demands of a modern transportation-system. But its improving. As you can see the expressway parts are turning into a highway and the belt is developing with the eastern, northern sections and also the M31 "shortcut".
http://img361.imageshack.us/img361/6109/m0trkpcn9.jpg
Today only the north-western part is untouched. Its a very complicated zone. Urban ares,a national park, envionmental questions and personal intrests are in the way of the project. So this is why the deadline for the completion of the M0 belt is somewhere in 2015.
Here are some pictures of the U/C eastern and northern sections:

About your questions: There are 522 km highway (M1, M3, M30, M35, M43, M7, parts of M0) and 130 km expressway (M15, M70, 2/A, parts of M0, M9) in the hands of the hungarian state. Concession own the M6 (58,6 km) and M5 (173,9) highways with a total length of 232,5 km.
Highways: 754,5 km
Expressways: 130 km
They are distinguished on the maps, they are usually shown with thiner lines as the highways.

Between 2007-2013 Hungary can call down 8000 billion Forints which is an estimated 30 billion Euros (on today's exchange rates). I'm keenly interested what the finished Second National Development Plan will contain. I'm pretty sure that the development of the transit-network is going to get a huge boost. I'll keep you informed about this as well.

The M7 Motorway
The M7 Motorway/Highway is probably one of the oldest developments of the World. It was started in 1964... And it will be finished in 2008. 44 years... No comment... Today the M7 is a none consecutive highway. Its finished between Budapest and Zamardi (90 km). This section was completely modernized durring 2001-2002.

is going to be finished just before next Christmas if the constructor can work as planned. This section is 14 kms long.
After Balatonszárszó the highway is finished on 46 kms until it reaches Balatonkersztúr. The sector between Balatonkeresztúr and Nagykanizsa (36 kms) is way behind schedule. The government will enounce the winner of that tender this Wednesday. Hopefully...
From Nagykanizsa until Becsehely (17 kms) the highway is in a very advanced condition. Its near completion. We can drive on it from this December.
Here are some photos of this section from the mid-summer:

There is one little piece of the M7 highway left. 1 km at the Croatian border with the bridge over the Mura river. This part of the development is under international public procurement, and I know nothing about it.
Please help me on this one if somebody knows more!
Now the summery of M7:
90+14+46+36+17+9+1 (kms) = 213 kms
The complete highway hopefully will be finished in 2008.

The M70 Expressway
This mainroad was built in 2003-2004. Its a 20 km long 2-laned road connecting Hungary and Slovenia. The M70 starts from the M7 highway at Letenye and ends at the boarder town of Tornyiszentmiklós. As far as I know the government will enounce the result of the widening tender to this development this fall, so the winner can finish this little highway-section by 2007.12.

Thanks for info Qtya :okay: One more question: do you know what is the final planned length of entire highway network (Motorways & Expressways) in HU?
Until 2015 if all the development plans go through from the today's 880 kms (highways + expressway) Hungary's transit-network will rise to 2800-3000 kms.

That quite surprises me, Czech highway network is planned in length only 2157 km, completion till 2020 (today we have 954km). It's probably because Hungary is bigger by some 15ths km2.

Until I get the information little info about the two bridges. Actually by building the crossing at Dunaújváros (unfortunately it hasn't been named yet) the Apollo bridge recives a Big Brother :). The new Hungarian bridge will be wider and also longer then Bratislava's One. While it is going to have a span of 307,9 meters at the Main part, the Slovakian has a span of 230 meters.

The M3 Motorway
The M3 Highway connects Budapest with the major cities of eastern Hungary like Miskolc, Nyíregyháza and Debrecen. Somewhere in the future between 2007 and 2013 itt will reach the Ukranian border at Záhony and through the M35 Romania at Bors but this connection is mainly based on the U/C nortern Transylvania highway built by the american company Bechtel which will hopefully be completed by 2012. Today the M3 highway is finished on 186 kms until the town of Görbeháza where it is divided into two separate highways, the original M3 leading to the direction of Nyíregyháza and Záhony, and the other one is M35 going to Debrecen and Bors.

The M30 Motorway
This highway is not really long, only 29 kms from the M3, but its very important for the economy of Hungary and the region. Miskolc, Hungary's third largest city and its industrial zone is still as highly important today as it was in the commie era. It was essential for this region to have a highway connection especially when the M3 is in a so obvious proximity. So when the M3 reached Emőd in 2002, the government started to build the M30 which consisted the bypass road of Miskolc as well.
Constructions ended in 2004. The M30 highway from Miskolc is planned as 4-laned expressway so not higway until the Slovakian border. The border-town's name is Tornyosnémeti. This section will be 62 kms long when finished somewhere in the future between 2010-2013.
Here you'll find some pictures of the completed parts of the M30 highway with the bridge over the Sajó river:

The M9 Expressway
Constructions ended on this 2-laned Expressway in 2003. The M9 with its 21 kms,is not really long today, but its part of a long way development, the "Southern Highway" project which will be finished hopefully in 2020. I hope a lot earlier. The reason why this little expressway section was built between the 6th and 51st main roads is the bridge of M9, named after Szent (St.) László who reigned in Hungary between 1077-95 as our 9th Christian king. This bridge was very important because there were no other Danube crossings within 50 kms. The closest bridges are at Baja and Dunaföldvár.
The completed M9 highway will start at the city of Sopron on the Austrian border, and passing Zalaegerszeg, Nagykanizsa, Kaposvár, joining the completed M9 section at Szekszárd which will be widened to a 4-laned highway by that time, and then passing Szeged, Békéscsaba and ending at Debrecen connecting into the M35. Through that and the M3, you can travel further to Slovakia or Ukraine in the future. So Kokpit, actually our completed highway-network - hopefully - will be about 200 kms longer than the 2576 kms I recently mentioned. Unfortunately the Szeged - Debrecen part is not shown on the earlier uploaded map. I don't exactly know why.

A szavazás menete
A szavazás szakaszai:
Az első, nominációs időszakban (július 21- augusztus 21.) várjuk az Önök névadó ötleteit. A beérkezett javaslataikra egyben szavazhatnak is. Ennek az időszaknak a végén a nevek beküldése lezárul. (Már le izs zárult. Qtya)
A második periódusban(augusztus 21- szeptember 8.) a nominációs szakaszban beérkezett szavazatok alapján az első 10 helyre rangsorolt ötletre lehet a továbbiakban is szavazni. Nagyon fontos időszak ez, hiszen ekkor dől el, melyik három név kapja a legtöbb szavazatot, melyik három név lesz a befutó!
A legnépszerűbb javaslatok további sorsa:
Ennyit a hivatalos közleményről.
Én még a szavazás kezdeti szakaszában jelöltem a Bethlen Gábor - híd nevet és amint majd látni fogjátok elég szépen teljesített... 1,73 millió szavazattal a negyedik lett az első fordulóban!
A második fordulóban viszont elég rosszul áll.
SZAVAZNI EZEN A LINKEKEN KERESZTÜL TUDTOK: http://www.m0hid.gov.hu/

So this letter in english, but briefly because I unfortunately I have to run...
In the mid-summer our government decided that the people can give the name of the new M0 bridge on the Danube. In the begining of the voting everyone could propose a name. So please help me if you dont mind.
You can vote until September 8, so we only got 2,5 days left. Everyone can vote once a day with one e-mail address.
You can vote on this homepage: www.m0hid.gov.hu
Unfortunately this is a Hungarian page so I have to lead You.
First, You have to go to this page:
When its loaded you'll see a 'REGISZTRÁCIÓ' word which meens Registration in the left corner.
Click on it.
When You clicked on it, the middle of the page changes and You'll see 3 boxes.

After You filled the 3 boxes, click on the 'REGISZTRÁCIÓ' button under the 3 boxes.
A text typed with red will show up. Now You can close the whole window.
You'll get a reply letter to Your mailbox shortly.
When You get the letter from: info@gkm.gov.hu open it. In the letter you'll find one sentence and your password. In the sentence there will be a word link in blue.

Yuppp! Its me allright! :nocrook: 208 km/h is the top speed, but on the M7 from Budapest I drove with a top speed of 212-4 km/h (Iff it shows the right speed) downhill... You are lucky Germany is beautiful, but in Austria I hate the A1 Autobahn... So boring... That's why I rather fly...

Hehe, but this time i flew to Germany, because im in Duisburg now. Last time i drove to Frankfurt (1000km), it took me 9,5 hours... Btw, that topspeed you are getting should be around 200kmh max in reality, i have checked how much some cars cheat with GPS, its funny.. If you are interested i can provide with some data. Btw, A1 is boring, but S1 that they have finished not long ago is amezing!!

Yesterday our National Highway Inc announced the building contractor for the final section of the M7 highway between the city of Letenye and the croatian border. The Betonút-Mota-Engil consortium will construct this little 1,1 km section with the bridge over the Mura river for 4,264 million euros. Development will start this spring.

On December 15th, 2006 the hungarian higway projects reached a new stage. Another important and probably our most developing city, Debrecen was connected into the hungarian highway-system with the new 35 km long M35 branched form main-highway M3. So now you can get from Budapest to Debrecen within an hour.
Here are some pictures of the new highway-section:

Now I'll give you a quick forecast on the hungarian highway-projects that will be finished in 2007. Unfortunately the last years higway-development boom is going to loose speed this year, but still 102 km of new vital highway-sections will be added to our highway-system. The extended length is going to be 1044 kms at the end of the year.

The longest Slovak viaduct over town Povaská Bystrica (population 43 000) on highway D1 will be "only" 1 786 m long but it is necessary - it will cross the town, railway and river Váh all in very narrow valey.
BTW I like your viaduct. It is simple and elegant. I hope the Slovak one will be similar.

Highway D1 Sverepc - Vrtižer will be the most complicated part of Slovak highway system. There will be 20 bridges which will have together 7 kilometres. There will be also two crossings one of them will be whole on bridges because it's behind the river Váh (second largest Slovak river after Danube) embankment.

Construction should start in April 2007. The viaduct will be 30 metres high. Present highway D1 ends before Považská Bystrica and new parts have been opened after Považská Bystrica few weeks ago. There is still gap and the traffic have to go through Považská Bystrica which is still only a second before collapse. Highway is not built yet because of some local inhabitants who were against it.

It happens all the time! The new subway line of Budapest (M4) is half year (+20) behind schedule because some maniac planed to sell its few square metre property for 1 million Euros. Now they had to move the project with 100 meters because of this individual... This little thing took away half a year...

Yes, it's ridiculous. For example Kia factory in Teplička nad Váhom near Žilina is producing cars but some buildings still don't have even building permission because some owners don't want to sell their land. The same problem in Považská Bystrica, the same in most of Slovakia and probably in whole Europe.

Governmental decision, the M0 freeway around Budapest must be completed by year 2014. (Inculding the very complicated north-western sector between main road 11 and M1 freeway.)
So that means we will finally have longer than 1 km tunnels. :) I know there are planned extensions of the Hungaria ring road, so there will be tunnels for that as well. Still, 2014 is too optimistic, but the ring road will probabbly be completed around 2018 or so.
I found a masterplan for the roads that are to be built.

Yeah! I know, but I heard it on Kossuth radio today 12:00... I think if the northern section reaches main road 10 by that time, we could be very happy.
However, I don't even want to imagine what would happen if the ring ends at that point... Main road 10 with its two lains, and traffic jams 24-7... Horror...Its not an option stopping there... BTW, I'm aganst of carrying out the M10 freeway project under the present circumstances... Build a recents "Schnell-bahn" or put the whole thing underground!

Future plans of the Hungarian highway developments.
:gaah: In 2008, only 40 kms of highways will be completed.
Both the northern sector of M0 bypass road with the new Danube bridge and the remaining 36 kms of the M7 highway between Nagykanizsa and Balatonkeresztúr is going to be finished in the mid summer of 2008. Probably earlier if the weather continues to be so gracious. So its not much... :ohno:
BTW we'll finally have another completed highway.
But this year, works on 158(+23?) kms are going to start mainly based on the M6 highway. Preliminary works have already ended almost everywhere. The outcome of the tenders will be announced soon, so the projects will be finished in 2009 or worst case, just days before the 2010 elections. Not to mention that Pécs is going to be the European Capital of Culture in 2010, so its vital to have a highway connection, without that the city is totaly unreachable.
The projects:
- M31 expressway between M0 bypass road and the city of Gödöllő located on the M3 highway. (12 kms)
- M6 highway section between Dunaújváros and Szekszárd. (67 kms)
- M6 highway section between Szekszárd and Bóly. (48 kms)
- M6 highway section between Bóly and Pécs. (31 kms)
- M56 highway section between Bóly and Ivándárda (border crossing to Croatia). (23 kms) In this case unfortunatelly I found no information, so I/We could only hope... That last 23 kms is really not to much, isn't it? :dunno: Or I ask to much?

This is true, but in case of small countries like Hungary the balance between the capital and the other regions could be desperately moved in favor of the capital. And without a proper regional alliance these regions can't really represent their interests. Naturally in an economy/system that functions well this wouldn't be a problem, but where the governments main supporters/voters are in the capital city, it is.

In Europe, naturally the most expensive one year valid vignette is in Hungary.

I figured it could be a problem. The original picture is the almost unusuable...
Highway fees in Euros/one year valid vignette:
Hungary: 138€
Austria: 73€
Bulgaria: 65€
Czech Republic: 32€
Slovakia: 29€
Switzerland: 27€

(If I see them right.)
The other one show the countries and prices (in eurocents)where Toll gates are used.
Spain: 8,0 eurocents/km
France: 7,8 eurocents/km
Portugal: 5,8 eurocents/km
Italy: 5,7 eurocents/km

But you live in Budapest so what's the problem. :) If anybody from regions wants to, he can move there as well. I see quite big advantage with big populous Budapest in the middle of the country, it's probably economically better than smaller cities hundreds kilometres far away from each other.

In the long term, decentralized economy works best. It is a bit like comparing Germany and Switzerland with Britain and France.
One of the reasons Czech economy is stronger than ours is that we have little else other than Budapest, while you have Brno and Ostrava. So geographically, the wealth distribution is more even there.

This is true, and basically this thread is kind of dedicated to this problem. A better infrastructure reaching important cities like Debrecen is inevitable. Connecting the cities via high-speed motorways is a way to speed to up the economy.
Btw, what do you think, will the new part of M0 be built on time? They were lucky with the weather, hopefully it continues to be so, but if they wont be able to finish it, thats big trouble.

You know last year, around october works on the eastern sector stopped for nearly two months, because of some mistakes in the Environmental authorization... You might remember the "huge" mistake. There were more intersections displayed in the final authorization instead of the the actual quantity that is being built... During the authorization process because of ENVIRONMENTAL REASONS the National Freeway Developer Inc. (Na Rt) removed one intersection from the program but forgot to erase it from the final paperwork... :bash:
So they had to carry through the whole process again!
Yeah, You are right they were lucky with the weather, so I hope they earned enough time to catch up.
The northern sector with the new bridge is on or ahead of schedule.

You probably were abroad till yesterday, because itt was all around the news. m))
I was out for some time too, but the Index Portal , and mno online focused pretty much attention to this "little" accident.
Sometimes the Greens are right but on the oder side they can be a hell of a pain in the ass...

I know it's too late, for example the M6 is already being built. I think the principal flaw in the Hungarian (two lane) main road system was that all main roads were centered towards Budapest. Of course the reason for this was that the capital is an agglomeration of 2,5-3 million in a country of merely 10 million. But this infrastructure makes the countryside even more dependent on the capital. What is currently being done, is laying the highway grid parallel to the main road system, at 10-20 km max, save a few exceptions. This only reinforces the current situation, with all it's deficiencies. The M8 and M9 are positive exceptions. I'll point out the highways, which I think could have been planned more efficiently, and why:
-With the highways in black I largely agree, although here too, I could imagine improvements, for example the M7 would be more efficient if it would run at 20-30 km from lake Balaton, because it could serve a much larger area (~30 km to both sides), than it currently does, because, well, not many people live in the water of lake Balaton, at least not permanently ;)
-The M86 in green is OK untill Szombathely, but it puzzles me why it should not be connected to Graz, Austria. Of course, there is the M8, but it is much longer, so it will take years before Budapest and the Steiermark region have a direct connection, instead the M86 provides a quicker solution.
-The M15 in orange should be prolonged to connect with the M86
-The M9 in Red needs some major adjustments. First of all, it should connect Sopron with Vienna, which is only logical, since in the Austrian side the A3 already almost reaches the Hungarian border. From Kaposvar it should not go straight to Szekszard, but connect to Pecs, which is the main city of southern Transdanubia. Furthermore, it should connect Szeged with Debrecen, thus creating a direct link between 3 of Hungary's 5 largest cities: Debrecen, Szeged and Pecs.
-The biggest planning error of all is the M6 in purple. It should not start in Budapest, but in Gyor! Because it crosses the M7 near Szekesfehervar, there is still a direct connection from Budapest to southern Transdanubia, which is hardly longer, than the currently built M6. But, and this is a huge bonus, there is also a direct connection from the Vienna/Bratislava/Gyor triangle to Pecs and Eastern Croatia/Slavonia, and, this is very important, because even if the M0/south is widened to 2x3lanes, it will be overburdened in 5-10 more years, an alternative route from Vienna to Belgrade, bypassing Budapest, via the M6/M9.
-The M8 in yellow should be extended to Eger, thus creating a second ring, at ~50-100 km around Budapest, consisting of parts of the M6 and M8. This also creates a direct highway link between the northeast (Miskolc, Nyiregyhaza, Eger) and the center and south of the country.
-The M43 in pink should connect to Timisoara, which is by far the largest and most important city in Southwest Romania/Banat, not Arad.
-Finally, the M3x in brown should connect Nyireghaza with Satu Mare and Baia Mare, two major cities in northwest Transylvania.
