The city of Antwerp(Belgium) will soon be home to a brand new museum: MAS (Museum Aan de Stroom, or Museum By the River) will bring together the collection of up to 6 existing museums in the 'Eilandje' quarter, a reborn neighboorhood of Antwerp, in the old port.

It is a 60 metres high tower of stacked exhibition spaces. Each level is twisted 90 degrees to form a giant spiral. This glazed space becomes a vertical galleria. Elevators guide the visitors to the top of the building in a journey through the history of Antwerp and trough the panoramas of the city. On the upper floor a restaurant, a conference room and a sky deck are situated. Square, docks and tower are designed to form one continuous space for exhibitions and events.

Floors: 15.000 m2
Square:4500m2
Costs: € 50.000.000
Client: City of Antwerp
Design: Neutelings-Riedijk
Status: design 2000, completion 2009
Total floor surface: 13700 m2
Ground surface: museum:1350 m2
Side pavillions:600 m2
Square: 4500 m2
Quays: 7250 m2

Another great project for Antwerp! At this time Antwerp is the hot-spot from Belgium I think :). Can't wait to go and visit the new museum, seems like a very nice building and also the location is very good.

It's a very nice area indeed. It used to be a 'grey' old port area, but today it has become one of the several new hotspots of Antwerp. Old warehouses are being converted into trendy lofts, bars, restaurants, etc.

Update:

On may 2th, an info point opened near the construction site, where you can watch a movie, study the plan and learn about the history of the neighboorhood, but, most important of all, there's a kickass scale model!

Meanwhile, Belgian member theonot, who has a great view of the project from the left bank, has made this series of wider shots, showing the evolution of the project (red outlines=MAS):

summer 2005, old warehouse not demolished yet :

taboe
December 23rd, 2007, 03:03 PM
^^the concrete won't be visible, the outside is covered with red natural stone... I think it will fit right in with it's surroundings (19th century warehouses). Furthermore, in the above rendering, I emphasized the museum, it won't stand out so much in real life.
