Even if it's not quite as tall, it will definitely make a statement on the area. driving down Bay from Bloor is quite a ride. Imagine it in 5 years.

a few last projects are desperately needed...
1) one city hall - phase 2
2) the bus terminal moved (to union as proposed) and redeveloped
3) the parking lot on the n-w corner (across from the bus terminal) developed
4) the gov't buildings at wellesley put in retail and restaurants at grade

and y'know, i think we'll see all this happen pretty soon.

Au contraire, mon ami... the mullions are an inherent part of the design aesthetic... There is no way they could achieve the desired pattern without mullions:

Aren't those the supporting pillars and floors underneath the glass though? They make it appear in the rendering that the glass is smooth all the way around with no bracketing, no mullions.
I'm sure this tower will turn out to look pretty 'pizimp', but I'm not sure how accurate it will be to the rendering.
Taller, Better
December 16th, 2007, 11:45 PM
^^^ You must have xray vision to be able to glean that from the rendering... to me they look like actual mullions. To my eye it appears that so far the rendering is about as accurate as renderings come nowadays...
thryve
December 17th, 2007, 12:49 AM
I never thought this building would have renderings myself. The rendering made it look like the panes of glass are flush up with eachother, but creating an alternating pattern.
The mullions are a huge surprise. Hopefully in the end, a nice one. Although it's not what I expected-- I think this tower will still look really cool. And something different for that stretch of Bay.

Taller, Better
December 17th, 2007, 12:53 AM
If the panes of glass were flush, there wouldn't really be a pattern visible from the ground, though... the mullions are what creates the rhythm and pattern. Maybe I am not looking at it correctly, but to my eye what is being built is what we see in the rendering.

Elkhanan1
December 18th, 2007, 01:58 AM
^^Based on the rendering, this 'moron' thought the mullions would be behind the glass with the glass panes resting on top and glued together, as is done all over the world, including here in Toronto increasingly. This technique produces a seemless-looking glass curtain that is very pleasing to the eye.

You mentioned this before and I repond in typical valantino fashion.
The fact is that window walls in Toronto average 1/3rd the cost of these curtain walls and a developer's profit margin on mid-range units simply do not justify the additional expense. The good news is that we do have a number of proposed high end product in residential, commercial, institutional that will use these curtain walls that could eventually lead to lower prices as the industry re-invests.

Nicest thing about Murano, aside from the design, is what it's covering up: a bit of the horrible Opera Place and most of the huge, blank side-walls of the coroner's building and housing co-op. Amazing that people would purchase condos facing blank walls. I guess anything sells these days. Also, one less surface parking-lot.

I only leave it at home if it is an actual snowstorm. The streets are clearer than a person might think, so riding in the winter is quite easy. The salt screws up the bike, however.
LOL! The three pieces of "art" near the Police HQ have always been very interesting. Not sure if I like the female bricklayer or the kid pulling the obelisk more ..
the fully uniformed female Policeperson inexplicably laying bricks while gingerly holding her walkie talkie aside is, in my opinion, figurative art at its worst. You can just imagine the thought process around the boardroom table as they try and jam as much corporate "symbolism" into the sculpture as possible ("building for the future" "multi tasking" "equal opportunity" "technologically advanced", etc... etc...) before the "art by committee" gets "signed off" by ten people.

Construction Worker Dies After Piece Of Metal Falls 20 Storeys
Monday May 12, 2008
A freak accident has left a construction worker dead and officials trying to figure out what happened. It was just after 4:30 Monday afternoon when crews working on a condo at 825 Bay St. near College noticed a co-worker bleeding on the ground.
He was struck by a piece of metal that had plunged from about 20 storeys up and hit him in the head. The victim, believed to be in his 50s, was wearing a hardhat but the impact was so fast and so strong, the projectile apparently went right through it.
The man was already in grave condition when paramedics arrived and he was rushed to hospital. Doctors couldn't save him.
It's not clear yet how the metal fell or the size of the object, but the Ministry of Labour will be called in to check out how the accident happened - and why.
No names have been released.
