60-million downtown Vancouver hotel planned

Vancouver Sun
Monday, May 07, 2007

Okabe North America Inc. announced today it will build a $60-million, 220-room hotel in downtown Vancouver, with a scheduled opening in the fall of 2009.

Coast Hotels & Resorts will operate the new 20-storey property at 1180 West Hastings Street and it will be called the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel. Coast Hotels is owned by Okabe North America's parent company - Okabe Co. Ltd. of Japan.

Okabe North America vice-president Shu Naito said Vancouver clearly needs more hotel capacity near the expanded waterfront convention centre, which is expected to open late next year.

"This new hotel is in a spectacular location which is ideally suited to business and leisure travellers," he said in a statement.

The hotel will be the fourth new downtown Vancouver hotel expected to open before the 2010 Olympics. Others include the Loden near Bute and Melville (this summer or fall), the Shangri-la near Georgia and Thurlow (September 2008) and the Fairmont Pacific Rim at Canada Place (summer 2009).

I always seem to expect more from the Japanese with regards to everything they do, but I'll admit that this is a bit disappointing. I say cut your losses and rejoice at the fact that it's going to add to your already fantastic skyline.

Vancouver set to ride another newwave of major hotel construction

Okabe Co. Ltd.’s $60 million West Pender Street development set for 2009 opening

Real estate round-up: Peter Mitham

Okabe confirms plans

It’s official: a report here last October regarding plans by Japan’s Okabe Co. Ltd. to develop a hotel at 1177 West Pender was confirmed with last week’s announcement that Okabe is proceeding with a $60 million 220-room hotel on the site.

Construction is expected to take 30 months. The hotel, which is slated to open in 2009, will operate under the Coast Hotels and Resorts banner as the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel.

Okabe’s news comes as Amacon moves to complete the new Loden Hotel two blocks south on Bute Street. The Loden is scheduled to open this summer and will mark the debut in Canada of Los Angeles’ Kor Hotel Group. Meanwhile, sales scouts are preparing to fly in June 7 for a first glimpse of the 155 private residences planned as part of the redevelopment of the Hotel Georgia. And on Robson Street, Mayfair Hotels and Resorts Ltd. has announced plans for a 108-unit hotel.

All told, more than 1,300 new hotel rooms are planned for downtown Vancouver in the next two years. While the Olympics may be the most obvious market, Tourism Vancouver executive vice-president Paul Vallee doesn’t believe the surge in construction is too much too fast.

Vallee says it’s been a decade since the last surge, and the current wave of development is nowhere close to the scale of the previous one. He also sees demand growing steadily.
