Okabe North America Inc. announced today it will build a $60-million, 220-room hotel in downtown Vancouver, with a scheduled opening in the fall of 2009.
Coast Hotels & Resorts will operate the new 20-storey property at 1180 West Hastings Street and it will be called the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel. Coast Hotels is owned by Okabe North America's parent company - Okabe Co. Ltd. of Japan.
Okabe North America vice-president Shu Naito said Vancouver clearly needs more hotel capacity near the expanded waterfront convention centre, which is expected to open late next year.

The hotel will be the fourth new downtown Vancouver hotel expected to open before the 2010 Olympics. Others include the Loden near Bute and Melville (this summer or fall), the Shangri-la near Georgia and Thurlow (September 2008) and the Fairmont Pacific Rim at Canada Place (summer 2009).
