Bank of America Plaza
Atlanta, USA

HEIGHT: 312m/1,023 feet
FLOORS: 55 floors
COMPLETION: 1992
ARCHITECT: Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo

This skyscraper of more than 50 stories is clad in granite. A large plaza is part of the bank development and the tower is set at an angle to the street. Elegant details and set backs with beveled corners distinguish this beautiful skyscraper. Like traditional skyscrapers, this tower has a tripartite structure with distinct base, shaft and top. The pyramidal top echoes the Atlantic Center, a somewhat earlier (1987) Johnson/Burgee skyscraper in Midtown Atlanta. Crowning the building is a stepped pyramid formed from an open steel frame that tapers to a 90-foot high spire. Four hundred and five square feet of the spire is applied with 23-karat gold leaf.

At night, this building is awe-inspiring in person, especially from a distance, approaching downtown from I-85 going west. The top ooks like a giant christmas tree at night from a distance.

This building looks impressive at night and forms a distinctive silhoutte against Atlanta's skyline. I sense that many people dislike its crown but I think the skeletal-nature of it does make it interesting IMO.

also the most beautiful building in any other US state capital:D

Probably my least liked 1000 footer on the planet right now. I have never liked this design, it's cheater top (almost 200 feet of its "hieght" is attributed to that scrap pile on top) and I have yet to comprehend how the building evokes Atlanta's "railroad heritage", which is the main component of its design concept. I've seen the building up close and in person, and must say that I liked it even less then. It just doesn't do it for me personally.

The two redeeming qualities of this building are that its top looks decent at night, and that its physical placement in the skyline is elemental in helping to merge the MT and DT skylines into one unified whole.

I'd give it a much higher score if it wasn't for the spire. It just doesn't work for me.

Right. The hollow top constitutes cheating. And whatever unfortunate thing sits above it is no prize, either (reminds me of a Soviet monument or an awkward attempt at a rocket). Otherwise I think it's a handsome building. :)

But: a harsh 7.0 because from me of the shortcomings.

I agree with JasonHouse, I don't like the hollow cage that adds so much height. It should be called a 900 footer.

It's OK, but the top does look like an afterthought that was plunked on at the last minute. The proportions of the cage seem a little big in relation to the tower. 6

Some other interesting facts:

- Bank of America Plaza is the tallest building in the United States outside of New York and Chicago.

- It won the BOMA Building of the Year award in 2000.

- The spire is made out of gold.

7/10 - The tower has good, soaring height, and the facade is nice, with the slim metal mullions and the stone and glass "butresses" on each corner. It's still a bit chunky, though, and perhaps could use some setbacks from a larger base. The worst thing is that crown, though - it isn't shaped that well, and it doesn't go with the rest of the building - would somone please put some glass or something on that thing, so it'll look like it's actually finished?
Also - if they were trying to make this the world's tallest Christmas tree, they're probably cheating - I'm sure the height of the building below doesn't count for that purpose :D

The spire is made out of gold.

Actually it's made of steel, but there is some gold leaf slapped on for good measure.;)

Hmmmmmm....:sly:
I've never been sure of this tower. I've seen it in person many times and have been in. The main thing I can say is that it suffers from a BAD location. A building this tall would be much better in a big cluster as a centerpiece, but this guy just stands alone in no mans land. Sure there are other significant towers in midtown but they are just so far apart. It does look impressive from certain, distant angles, like down Peachtree from the north.
The colors are ungainly and certainly don't help balance the nearby (and incredibly ugly) Bellsouth Twr. The top is just a shame as it has so much potential but is neither refined, well integrated nor used for any human function.
This building wants to "be somebody", but it completely ignores it's sorroundings and looks like it was an exercise undertaken purely under the guise of excess. Should midtown ever boom again with new towers, and should some of them cluster around this building, then it might gain some points.

Living with this skyscraper in my view as I cruise around town is great. I use it as a compass and feel it looks amazing at night.

The plaza and surrounding integration into the cityscape sucks, but the lighting and size make up for that.

I've been into this building quite a bit and it is extra luxurious, with only something to the tune of 68 floors, so the ceilings are high.

The body is not the worst, and looks better close up, though dull from a distance. Did they put that stupid hat on it to take away from it's dull body? It does look nice at night though, so most my points go for that.

Westin,
wasn't trying to be insulting..
it's still is an amazing scraper considering it's height and the crown issue doesn't really bother me but there something about the setbacks not matching the rest of the facade that makes it look odd IMO...as for the other BofA's comment I would say Charlotte takes top honors.

I think it is perfect....but it's your opinion. :)
I agree about Bank of America Charlotte though, it is the best of all the buildings. I wish the architect of Bank of America Atlanta would have taken more time to design the crown. When he found out Charlotte was going to be higher, he altered the design and made a great big pyramid to surpass Charlotte's. The weird thing is though, if you take off the crowns on both buildings they are the same height.

This is by far the ugliest building over 1,000 ft. Well, I shouldn't say that, because it isn't even 1,000 ft.! The spire goes up to 933 ft. The cage is horrible, it looks like they ran out of money and it serves no purpose to the building. It gets an extra .5 point because of the night lighting.

Context. This building is accessible only by freeway? Look at the surrounding "urban" landscape. Yikes! Le Corbu would love it. I think this building is quintessential Atlanta anti-urban crap.

This building's height is 200' of garbage at the top makes it a pretender in the 1000'+ category.

Atlanta can stick this building back under it's self-inflated, boisterous cap.

Last time I checked, this site is for constructive criticism. Frankly, son, in my very humble opinion, Atlanta's attempts at skyscrapers seem to be cries for help.

All the Atlanta buildings shown here (with the exception of one in suburban Dunwoody) are provincial (at best) or just plain awful rip-offs of really great architecture and urban design.

I know that Atlanta desparately wants to be a world-class city but, in spite of the 1996 Olympics, the city and her buildings remain unimpressive.

I don't mean to hurt your feelings. I'm just one opinion among thousands. :angel1:

The building by itself I give a 7.5 in the skyline it gets a 9.0 It does a great job bringing the midtown and downtown clustes togather but needs to be about 10 stories taller for the size of the crown and the placement of the building

933 foot building (not counting the crown) that is 55 stories???

You love taking your stabs at this building and Atlanta in general. We have both been on both forums for quite some time, don't think I don't know how you are.

Very unique top which looks fantastic at night. The rest I am not sure what to make of, seems to have a mixture of 70's and 80's styles in it, but doesn't really gel all that well. The reddish coloured granite looks rather unattractive to me. Anyway, definitely gets points for height and as mentioned, its crown.

The first time I saw this building was at night, and I was really impressed with how pretty the Atlanta skyline was. I have driven through during the daytime several times since and never understood why I was so much less impressed. It took until now for me to realize exactly what the difference is: this building at night vs. this building in sunlight.

It's an ok structure overall, with some nice touches that redeem it a bit. The "descending" frames (what exactly is that called?) around the main entrances remind me of an old cathedral. The "cage" really isn't so bad, except in that it adds nothing to the building but height. I don't think the spire matches it very well, though.

The height-cheat might be petty, but it adds expectations to a building. If you're going to design a tower specifically to be the tallest in a given area, it better be something worthwhile, not 700 feet of real business and 200 feet of filler space. It would have been better off being shorter and better-looking.

Nice proportions, and pyramidal crown. I like how it's carved in and stepped rather than being a simple pyramid. Somewhat similar to the Key Tower in Cleveland, by Cesar Pelli. I also like how the spire is composed of sections rotated 45 degrees to each other. 8/10.

2.5/10. The only good points BofA gets is the Christmas tree lighting at night, the old school fashion of the entrances and the Midtown/Downtown combo view from the north when blended in nicely. Everything else about it makes it a total failure in my book. I'm very disgusted at the crown during the day -- it is so unfinished. It should not even count in height until the builders have the common sense to just finish the crown; otherwise, they should still consider it 900 feet or less, not add 123 more feet to the height like that. As long as they keep letting it be looking like that, it is still a cheater. Just put some glass on that crown for God's sakes! It is even worse looking at that antenna sticking out of the crown; 2000 feet altogether with the rest? If they can't finish that crown, the antenna should be taken down, and the crown should be demolished. Just leave the building by itself. I also find the location pitiful because it slices in half between downtown and midtown. SunTrust Plaza is the real tallest building in downtown at 858 feet, while One Atlantic Center is still midtown's tallest at 820. At least both have well-rounded centralized locations. Another topic: after hearing about Charlotte's BofA bein gtaller, that builder should have left BofA Atlanta as originally planned, not get jealous of another city's building height just because Metro ATL is bigger than Charlotte.

I'll have to give it a 9.5. This building just wouldn't look the same without it's intricately detailed hollow crown and spire, which makes it unique and unlike any other. For those trolls (you know who you are) who have a beef with it's so-called 'cheater' top, take it up with the CWTB. Or better yet, why don't ya'll become architects or join the CWTB yourselves since some of ya'll are a little too inclined to speak on what should and shouldn't count as far as dealing with official height(s). I ain't trippin', just had to get that off of my chest after reading some of these post. :)

Sorry for the mispelling....but like you said, they are PROPOSALS-i.o.w.
plans, visions that are not written in stone. Atlanta has had a few that had
gotten shot down back in the day, to include the 'Atlanta Tower' (kinda gay,
huh?) that would 've been the world's tallest building at 130 floors and 2,000
ft. high. The only reason they didn't build it was because it would have
dwarfed the skyline something awful. Atlanta may not have the density
that other cities have, but I personally like that it's an actual skyline and
not some random cluster. And for your 'never been or ever will be' comment,
just how do you know this?..... Congrats on your city's *cough* proposals.

HEY GET ALONG!. My 2 cities. Miami/Atlanta. Atlanta has taller buildings but its too spread out. If they could fill in the gaps it'll be great. Miami is right next to the water, with a ton of projects going up right now, and if the 2 1200 ft towers get aproved. No doubt It'll beat Atlanta (IN MY OPINION). I love both cities, but it's all about taste. Some people like skylines right next to the water, others like skylines that are spread out.

7.5 out of 10. Looks pretty good but certain things seem a bit iffy to me such as the spire

You all do realize that some of the coolest and most famous buildings in the world have spires right? Buildings like....the Chrysler building...and...Petronas Towers...ring any bells?

8/10. Love the tower up until the pyramidal top, which is interesting but doesn't gel well with the rest of the tower IMO. But with the buildings towering appearance and great facade, the "cage" doesn't detract from it too much.

sorry 'bank of america plaza elitists' but i just dont like it that much. kind of lacks inspiration although i like the night shots. ive driven through atlanta and scene it and ive layed over in atlanta and seen it out the window of the airplane and it adds to the skyline and pulled it together, but the building itself isnt anything special in my opinion...

What most of the people here don't understand is that there is no "norm" or "criteria" that a building's appearance must have. Can something ben unique for a change?

No Chris. People will always hate on this building, probably for the sole fact that it is in Atlanta, something a lot of people can't seem to handle. Also, this building has a spire (gasp!). Never mind the fact that many of the worlds tallest and most famous buildings have spires themselves...(Chrysler building, Petronas Towers, the new WTC in New York, even the Burj Dubai). But, in the end i think we just have to realize that people's opinions about buildings don't really matter all that much. As long as you like it, thats all that matters.

9/10 This building holds a soft spot in my heart. Everytime I drive to florida I see the nicley lit crown driving down 1-75. It is one of the best nightly lit skyscrapers imo.

Well said.

Atlanta seems to get a bad rap on websites like this fr being a sprawly nightmare, yet mist people I have met who have been there loved it.

Since when do tops have to be solid to be included in the height?
And what shortcomings are you speaking of? This thing stands 1,023
feet, for christ's sake!!!

LOL, I'll never get my fill when it comes to vouching for this building...

10/10. I see it almost everyday and I just love it. Actually, until a couple of weeks ago, I didn't even realize it was one of the world's tallest. It's the tallest building I've ever seen but it doesn't seem that big. When I didn't know it's official height, I figured buildings like the Sears Tower and Tapei 101 were over twice as tall as it. I guess I expect too much out of skyscrapers.

Well, aren't you just a bundle of joy and good tidings! If you're going to be offensive the least you could do is spell your slurs correctly. I may have been over rated once or twice, but trust me I have never been over ratted ever!

And for the record, I rate this building a 9 out of 10. I've seen it every day since the day it was built and it keeps getting better every year. If I remember correctly when it was built it was the 9th tallest building on earth.
