US Bank Tower
Los Angeles, USA
HEIGHT: 310m/1,018 feet
FLOORS: 73 floors
COMPLETION: 1990
ARCHITECT: Pei Cobb Freed and Partners
The US Bank Tower exists today for one reason: its neighbor, the Los Angeles Central Library, found itself in deep trouble. Ravaged by fire in 1986, the library was one step away from the wrecking ball when an urban development team stepped in. The team bought the ailing structure, restoring the library and building a 75-story skyscraper adjacent to it.
Originally called the Library Tower, the name soon changed when First Interstate Bancorp negotiated to occupy a portion of the building in 1990 in exchange for having it renamed. Just six years later, the skyscraper reverted to its former name when First Interstate Bancorp was taken over by another local bank.
Located just 26 miles from the San Andreas Fault, the skyscraper was built to withstand the "Big One," an earthquake the magnitude of 8.3 or bigger on the Richter scale. The skyscraper's massively reinforced central core and lighter perimeter columns form a framework flexible enough to resist violent side-to-side shaking, but stiff enough to resist the enormous wind forces that affect high-rise buildings.
In March of 2003, the Library Tower was renamed the US Bank Tower and a logo was added to the top of the skyscraper.

I used to dislike it..but I think there is one thing that cannot be denied this building: it is visually-arresting.
I like the crown and the setbacks which make it look more slender.

Not a fan of this one.If it had a finished looking crown, perhaps to a point,I'd give it a top score. As is, a 5, because it is an impressive structure and not just another glass box.

I like it! The only big thing I have against it is the lack of a spire (every skyscraper in LA lacks a spire because of a city ordinance that says that all buildings must have a flat top so that helicopters can land on it). The top looks a bit unfinished. But then again I never thought of spires as being very attractive on post-modern skyscrapers, so that can be forgiven. All in all, I give it a:

Nothing really special about this one....
- It wants to have a crown but it lacks so bad! They tried but failed horribly.
- The building looks awful up close but fantastic far away.
- It is horrid that every single window has a corner on it. And the window color doesn't help much either.
I give the Library Tower a 6/10 just because it has some height.
Liz L
November 22nd, 2002, 02:41 PM
6/10 - It has height, and it definitely IS NOT a box. I also appreciate the attempt to use setbacks.
But still...I've seen buildings where bringing the windows out from the facade helped, but here they merely give the facade a corncob look. And I realize that I can't blame the roof soley on the architects because of LA's roof restrictions, but somehow that roof reminds me of a bottle cap....Finally, the setbacks don't seem to really help that much...

This is my favorite building in LA, beause it is the tallest in LA and it looks like a giant roman column. It looks best at night and when the Lakers won the their third title they had the crown in gold and purple.

It's a great building I give it 9.0
I has class, without being pretentious like some other buildings that try to look more than they really are by adding a spire.

I have always loved the Library Tower. I lived in the LA area
in 1988. In the summer of 1989, I returned for a visit and
suddenly saw the Library Tower nearing completion. I couldn't
believe my eyes. The pink color of the exterior along with the
blue of the windows, the shape of the whole building, I truly
love everything about it. This is a complete winner. WHat a
difference this tower made for downtown LA.

I've heard people say that they hate this building, but why? This is my home town and that where i live i can see it tower over the other 15+ 500 footers that are downtown. This is my favorite building in the country though Sears tower and Transamerica in San Fran are great rivals. I think people have a problem with it because it is the tallest building West of the Mississippi and their city doesn't claim that right. In my life i have traveled to many different types of cities, to New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta ect. I'm Amazed by their stifes. But Los Angeles is my favorite city and the Library Tower is my favorite building. SORRY! :D

- The glass crown on top is brightly illuminated at night.
- The Bunker Hill Steps, a variation of Rome's Spanish Steps, wrap around the west side of the base, leading up to Bunker Hill.
- First building to be destroyed by alien invaders in the 1997 movie "Independence Day".
- When completed, became the tallest building on the Pacific coast, surpassing *Bank of America Tower in Seattle.
- Tallest building in the United States west of the Mississippi River.
- The building was designed to withstand an earthquake of 8.3 on the Richter Scale.
- The tower has 4 glass-crowned setbacks, at the 48th, 57th, 61st, and 69th floor levels.
- This is the tallest building in the world located in a major seismic region.
- The highest helipad in the world is on the roof.
- Until US Bancorp committed to a major lease with naming rights in March 2003, the building was named Library Tower after the *Los Angeles Central Library across the street.

9/10. After LA was made to look bad cause of other talls taller than them in other places, US Bank Library Tower changed all that. I can't picture Los Angeles without it, or else the skyline would still suck like it's the 1980s. I like LA skyline now because Library Tower improved it greatly.
The crown is pretty and ancient! Another crown design of its own since every building here had to be flatroofed. Should another earthquake hit, this one will still be standing! Due to the name, they might as well move LA Central Library into the tower -- and you got yourself a Library of Congress on the west coast. LOL

It was called that I believe because the air rights belonged to the library. It was an ugly name if you ask me. I think without this building there wouldnt really be much of a skyline period, it would look just like any other city.

So that's the tall building I see on "24" all the time! It looks cool at night when those top lights are lit up. The building is new, but is unique, and cylindrical as well. Cool. 9/10.

The Library Tower is very classy looking. It's definitely unique and was perfectly placed in the center of the Financial District to effectively provide a center and balance to LA's burgeoning downtown skyline! As L.A. Live and the Grand Ave. Project are closer to completion (~7-10 years from now), Library Tower will still be a in the center of it all!
What a beaut!

This is my favorite skyscraper in LA! The US Bank Tower is the perfect symbol of the West Coast skyscraper and puts LA's skyline on the map! The buildings's coronet style makes it striking and is placed right in the middle of downtown LA! Without this tower, LA's skyline would be really boring!

I defintily agree but what do you expect from corporate America!
choyak
November 25th, 2005, 09:15 AM
Yeah I know about the corporate america thing but at least the 'citigroup' building next to US bank the sign appears to belong there, and look at the AIG building on Hong Kong, this sign looks that it was actually designed to be there but the LA and Milwaukee US bank the sign is just slapped on there and one hides the beautiful crown and the other hides the beautiful diagonal bracing!!!
WANCH
November 25th, 2005, 09:20 AM
True but the Citigroup doesn't appear to belong there as well! If you noticed that big patch next to the sign, that used to say 444 forgot the name but that's the original sign!
Slapping the US Bank Logo isn't bad for the one in LA but the one in Milwaukee blows!
