I thought that I would create a thread for feedback about this new forum...
Also folks, please do not hesitate to make your own contribution to these threads. Feel free to post pics within the threads that feature the thread's subject building, especially rarely seen pics, like of the interior or base.

At the end of all of this, it seems that the averaged scores of each building will be used to rank them. Hence, we will all have a general idea of what SKYSCRAPERCITY forumers like etc.
To give a fair poll..I suggest everyone vote on EVERY building; not just those they fancy so that the results wont be skewed.

That's a good idea, RafflesCity. "Popular" buildings have dozens of votes while others have just a few. I just voted on the #21 AT&T HQ and was surprised I was only the 7 person who voted. #10 BoC has like 74 votes.

You have to keep in mind guys, for some buildings we already had existing statistics from thier threads at WSF. Other buildings, like the AT&T building were just posted, so they don't have many votes yet. In fact, the AT&T building was just posted this afternoon.

Did you read the announcement in this forum? I hope to eventually extend it to include the Top 250, maybe even the Top 500. I think that 250 would be good, since we have the open forum for the rest...

There are a few things that everyone should keep in mind on this forum. Some have already been mentionned, but I'll say it again anyway.
On many of the threads there are already votes included in them. These are all the votes that I took down from the old Rate Our Talls threads back at WSF. This way all those threads weren't just a waste of time because everyone's rating still contributes to the average. There are only 37 threads that I have ratings saved for, so most of the buildings will be starting from scratch. There are already a few that haven't been seen before, because of the discrepancy between roof height and structural height (Burj Al Arab and AT&T Corporate Centre for example). Also, don't be concerned about rating the buildings if you have already given your rating before, it all averages out in the end and probably makes hardly any difference.
Like Raffles says, try and vote for every building if you can. On the old forum, one thing I noticed was the huge difference in the amount of ratings between buildings. It ranged from as low as 25 for some to almost 50 for others. So do try and keep things even. You don't have to rate them all at once, you can easily start with #1 and work your way to the latest one at whatever pace you feel like. I know they aren't in order on the forum, but you can just use your browser's search in page function (press CTRL-F) and type in "#15" or whatever number you're looking for.
Next, when you're rating the building, why not take 30 seconds and reply at the same time? Just say what you rated it and give a short explanation why you gave it that rating. Just say what features you like about the building and what features you don't like. It makes it a lot more interesting to see specifically what everyone thinks about the building you're looking at. Plus you can also see at the same time what some of your favourite forumers think about each building compared to you.
The threads will continue to be made until we get to 100, then maybe a little break, and after that the list will definitely be expanded. I would love to just snap my fingers and have the top 500 right here, but it's very time consuming to make these threads. I have to find pictures, which can sometimes be very difficult depending on the building, and I always try to find a variety of pictures (day, night, different angles, etc.) along with the best quality shots. If for any reason you think my pictures aren't satisfactory, or you just have some interesting pictures of a building, post them! Everyone always wants to see more pictures!
That's all I have to say. Now get out there and rate our talls! :okay:

Will it be helpful if I created some threads on the top100 in the open forum and then u guys can shift them over? Or is it redundant? (Buildings that have not been posted on the old forum that is)
I was thinking that the more people who work seriously on this..the faster this project can be finished.

That's a great idea Raffles. There are some buildings that we will have a hard time finding pics for, so every bit helps. Some of the buildings came from threads moved from the open forum anyways.
I'm sure you've seen the quality of the ROT 100 threads thus far, and understand what I'm looking for, so have at it my friend!
btw, you can even rank them if you like (in the thread title)... The quickest place to find the Top 100 by structural tip is on Skyscrapers.com... You don't have to do them in any set order either.

Skyscrapers.com doesn't allow external linking anyway.
D-Mac
October 17th, 2002, 10:50 PM
Well they do allow external linking, they just make it difficult to find the image source. Also, I've noticed that in the past few days a lot of their images have been reduced in size and the larger versions no longer exist. It's a bit of a shame because they had a lot of great pictures.
Jasonhouse
October 18th, 2002, 12:29 AM
You can only access the full scale images if you are a paying member of the site. Remember, they are in it to make money now (cover costs, whatever they call it).
I would prefer it if we relied on them as little as possible, though in some cases, it might behoove us to contact the editors responsible for the pics, and seek thier permissions to use the images. I'm pretty sure when they see what we are using them for, they won't mind.
And btw, GREAT threads so far Raffles! That's so great of you to help out!

No problem Jason! I am THOROUGHLY enjoying myself :D (Some pics are HARD to find...I feel as if I am cheating when I resort to skyscraperpictures.....I hope someone can help contribute China pictures!)
Some of my thoughts:
a) Pls dont forget to transfer these buildings over from the open forum:
MetLife
Osaka WTC
John Hancock Boston
BNI Ctr/Wisma 46
USX Tower
b) This forum has now reached 2 pages...we should remind voters about this
c) When the time is ripe..we can do forums for 100-200, and proposed/contruction buildings...

I've been thinking about that. The way it will be soon is that we'll have all 100 threads in this section. It's kind of creating a mess though. I don't think many people bother to look on the second page, and when we have 200 threads there, it will be very disorganized. Maybe we could have World's top 50, 51-100, 101-150, etc. Just a thought, because it's going to be very messy in here!
Raffles, skyscraperpicture is a great site, but I try not to use it too heavily. I like to find pictures from as many places as I can (it's easiest when I have nice pictures saved on my computer) but like you say, for some buildings it's very difficult to find nice ones!

It is rather tricky to recall that, but remember that threads that you replied to have a black dot on thier icon...
Instead of looking like this: http://skyscrapercity.com/images/newfolder.gif or this http://skyscrapercity.com/images/folder.gif
They look like this: http://skyscrapercity.com/images/dot_newfolder.gif or this http://skyscrapercity.com/images/dot_folder.gif
The dots only appear when you have replied, and voting doesn't trigger the dots.

Good question. I believe once we complete the ROT100, we will start a series of 101-200. If a building gets pushed out of the 100, I guess thats where it will go, as new buildings get completed..ie 2IFC.
Dylan Leblanc
October 31st, 2002, 10:55 PM
What about when 2IFC and Taipei 101 get finished? The ranking of all top 100 buildings will have to be changed.
Jasonhouse
October 31st, 2002, 11:01 PM
Then we will change them. That's just part of the upkeep of such a list. With three of us in here maintaining things, it will never be too much for any one person. The two mods make most of the threads, and I come behind and add pics and info as I find it, and will take care of things like editing thread titles.
I would like to get to the point eventually where we aren't hotlinking pics from other sources though. That really bugs me...

Hey, folks - just had a brain wave - WHen you're ready to compile stats, if you want to send them to me, I'd be happy to put them into an Excel spread sheet and set up charts - I might even see if I can factor out any distortion caused by some buildings getting a lot more votes than others?
I'm pretty good at this, since I set up surveys and crank out statistics for my library (and I have a few thoughts about how to squeeze out every bit of info from those numbers....)

Thanks very much for the good words, Raffles - actually, I'm a librarian by profession, but I'm also an artist, if not professional caliber, and I like to think I have an artist's eye (and architecture is, in some sense, a form of art). I also appreciate beauty in all its forms, from well wrought jewelry, to mountains, to gothic cathedrals, to soaring skyscrapers...
Oddly enough, 9/11 sparked my interest in architecture - I now have a greater appreciation of city skylines, and the people who put them up there. If you're interested, you might like to check out my net site - http://cybrarian.blogspot.com - architecture, poetry, politics...
As for the stats - if you send them to me in separate batches as you collect them, I think I can set up the spreadsheets so I can just add them in as I receive them.
PS - you should have seen hubby and myself in Chicago this summer, strolling along, gawking at the awesome skyscrapers, me darting here and there looking for that perfect shot...I bet it took Chicagoans about 5 seconds to figure out we were tourists LOL...:D
Cheerio!:)

Folks, I have a question - the Bank One Tower in Indianapolis isn't on a couple of lists of the world's 100 tallest skyscrapers I have - one is in Judith Dupre's book. Does the list you're working from include the spire height? Even if it does, I don't think that building could be more than 800 ft. tall, with or withour spires, because if it were, it would be twice as tall as our next tallest building, which it isn't They're within a block or two of each other, so it's easy to tell. I'm a native of Indianapolis, and hate to knock a possible local claim to fame, but still and all...:? I'll try to get some information Monday...
BTW, this is assuming 10 ft. or a tad more per story, including structure of the floor itself, except for the first one or two floors - a good guess, I think, since I've been in Bank One and our #2 tower, the 36 story high black box with white trim you can see in a couple of the pics of Bank One...
RafflesCity
November 30th, 2002, 06:31 PM
SUNNI> we will add it once its facade is more or less completed. What is the status of the cladding?
In general we will add new buildings once their exterior is more or less complete and this will be done in cycles. But thanks for pointing out this building :)
Liz> We include the spire in the height and we have taken our height sources from skyscrapers.com 247m. It is interesting to note that skyscraperpage gave the height as 250m.
D-Mac
November 30th, 2002, 11:47 PM
Liz, I think the height figure of 247m for the Bank One Tower is reasonable. The second tallest in Indianapolis, the AUL Tower is 162m and 38 floors, while the Bank One Tower is 49 floors. So Just based on number of floors one would expect it to be about 25-30% taller or at around 205-210m. Add on a 40m or so spire and the height becomes 245-250m. So just based on this rough estimation, 247m for Indianapolis' tallest doesn't seem unreasonable at all. Also it's not twice as tall, it's almost exactly 50% taller.
Liz L
December 1st, 2002, 04:19 AM
Thanks for clearing that up, DMac and RafflesCity - I need to catch up a bit on my local 'scrapers, I see...I hadn't even known that AUL was taller than the black box with white trim, which used to be the Indiana National Bank Tower, until INB got swallowed by some larger fiscal fish, whose name escapes me right now.
At any rate, that particular black box is, BTW, THE premier place in Indy for launching fireworks. A couple of times when I was a teenager, I had a front-row seat for the 4th of July fireworks on the roof of a building right across the street...you should have heard the echoes ricochet from building to building!
If the two lists I looked at didn't count spires, that would explain why they didn't list Bank One - and will still allow me the extra pleasure of knowing that Indy has broken into the architectural "big league" :D
Oh, BTW - On Architecture Digest online some time ago, a lively dispute was going on as to which was taller - Sears or Petronas...with the usual learned discussion about whether antennas really, really should be counted, whether highest inhabited floor should be the deciding factor, etc. One weisenheimer finally commented that the only way to settle the spat for good would be to run a tether from the Sears tower up to the space station....that would take care of that!

Actually, I think I stumbled on it once, Rafflescity, but I'm not getting involved except to chuckle from the sidelines. :D The battle lines HAVE BEEN DRAWN, and the positions some folks take on this seem to be about as flexible as the positions a "Yankee" and a southerner might take when discussing who really, really should have won the Civil War, which some insist should really be called "The War Between the States," because there wasn't anything "civil" about it...

Why not a "rate the top 100 towers thread"
CERI
August 1st, 2004, 03:49 AM
I remember there were at least 100 people (who are jealous of the BOC) had voted 3-or-less couple weeks ago, and now the number was reduced to 70 something.
Same thing happens to the Chrysler Building, but all the 3-or-less votes were canceled.
Did anyone had adjusted the result?
Why the all the 3-or-less votes of Chrysler were omitted but the votes of BOC were not?
I think it is not fair.:guns1:
Islander
August 4th, 2004, 11:49 AM
^I just noticed something funny. Wondering why the Chrysler's score dropped to 8.99, I opened the Chrysler and BOC's threads in seperate windows and looked at the votes next to eachother. The amounts of votes for each number on both buildings are almost identical, except Chrysler has about 40 votes for 3.5 (almost none for 3 or less) and BOC has about 70 for 3 or less (almost none for 3.5). So you'd think BOC would be lower than Chrysler, but BOC is still almost half a point higher. Is something glitched or is it just me?
CERI
August 8th, 2004, 03:43 AM
Now it had been changed again.
This time the average of the Chrysler had fallen dramatically from 9.3 to 8.7 within 2 weeks, but the total votes have changed much.
Did anyone change/cancel the votes?
Can anyone explain why?

I think the "Rate Our Skylines" chart should be restarted every 2 or 3 years, since skylines change a lot over the years. Let's say you gave Dubai a 6.0 in 2002. Since then, dozens of new skyscrapers have been built and the skyline changed quite a bit. This is also true for a lot of other (especially asian) cities such as Chongqing, Shanghai, Sharjah, Taipei,...

Wouldn't be fair that in case of Twin Towers both buildings be listed?
Like Petronas Towers or Emirates Towers. Each tower have different height, and in case of Emirates Towers, at least, even different use (1 = Office, 2 = Hotel).
I think this will be more fair.

It certainly appears more accurate but over here we've decided to treat twins, triplets and so on as 1 entity, meaning that we can have more buildings to rate and to maintain a consistency of 100 threads per forum. In some cases, you'll have to count 5 or 6 buildings on the list merely because theyre cloned residentials.
AltinD
March 1st, 2005, 11:51 AM
But "cloned residentials" aren't even near 200 meters of height, let alone taller then 300 or 400.
So more apropriate, and as a kind of compromise, will be to list separately twin towers if they are taller then 200 meters.

Dont worry, we are arranging with Dubai_Lover to get the thread started. Of course we will need good pics, otherwise it will shortchange the building. Just compare with the kinds of pics we have for other buildings in the top100.
Be a little patient :)

ok i will be patient. but for interest what is the work behind...
make a new thread and put in poll and pics?
is it that you have to change all the figures...?
AtlanticaC5
March 14th, 2005, 05:25 PM
First you create the thread, with pics and so on. Then you find no 100 (which becomes no 101) and push it off to Top 101-200, and then find and push 200 (which becomes 201) to Top 201-300, and then no 300 into the local sections. We don't update the numbers everytime we add a new building, but we do it a little now and then. Then you have to update the list of all the buildings (300). It doesn't sound that difficult, but it takes some time. And that's the inside-report from the ROT-section :)

but now back to work and add chelsea tower ;)
AltinD
March 15th, 2005, 04:40 PM
In a month or two another Dubai tower has to be added to the list: The 211 m tall Grosvenor House Hotel by Le Meridien, followed in a month or so by the 220 m tall Al Seef Tower (res.) and then the 200 m tall Le Reve Tower, and by the end of the year, the Twin Al Fattan Marine Towers, 245 m each (res) have to be added also on the list.
Now there is a problem: Next year will be compleated The Jumeirah Beach Residence project, which has 36 residential tower, similar almost identical in style, but with different floor count, from 20 - 54. Several of them will over 200 meters tall. How will be these towers rated? As a complex or separately? The individual towers have no names, just number-codes.

The general policy has always been the same here...
When someone creates a proper ROT thread for a new 'ranked' building in the open area, we will take note of it. Once we have a group of new 'ranked' ROT threads to incorporate into the Top 300 list, we then add them.
People MUST remember that when we update the list, we have to re-enumerate dozens or hundreds of threads. Thus, there is no way that we will ever update the entire list immediately. We will wait for a reasonable queue of new threads to build, and then add them in batches, to lessen what would otherwise be a crushing workload for our mods. I have personally always been of the opinion that the ranked lists should be updated about 3-4 times a year, and that's it.

^Four times a year makes perfect sense. Now that April has come, hopefully the first update for 2005 should take place.

wjfox2002 I see you've closed the "New York New York, Chongqing" thread in 201-300. I know it shouldn't be there but could you or one of the other ROT mods unlock it and place it in the "other" section? I mean chongqinghero went to the trouble to make it (and it will be in the top 300 next update) so I think moving rather than locking would be reasonable.

There are two towers listed as #88, the new Chelsea Tower in Dubai, on the sticky thread and this tower in Perth, Australia: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=12111
How come?
AtlanticaC5
June 12th, 2005, 08:07 PM
@AltinD: When we add a new building (like Chelsea Tower), we give it the correct rank in height (#88). However, the building which was #88 earlier (Central Park Tower), will still have #88 for a while, since we don't renumber all threads after each added building (it would take forever to do so). We don't re-number buildings very often since there are 300 threads which have to be re-numbered manually, and that takes some time. :) To see the correct ranking, I'll recommend you to take a look in this thread: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=85276

Eureka does not need a sticky. People are constantly bumping it. No building should have a sticky.

They are height rankings, but they haven't been updated in over a year. I guess there needs to be some changes to the database. Buildings are shifting spots so often nowadays with so many new developments.
