Baiyoke Tower II
Bangkok, Thailand
HEIGHT: 304m/977 feet
FLOORS: 85 floors
COMPLETION: 1997
ARCHITECT: Plan Architects Co.
Having the silhouette of the first Baiyoke Tower as its base, Baiyoke Tower II stands tallest with its red sandstone massive concrete base, giving the image of natural sandstone rising from the earth, punched out to provide space for human's various activities. The higher it goes, the more modernized and sophisticated these various voids become.
The glittering gold color, a Thai/oriental element symbolizing wealth, defines the top silhouette of Baiyoke I that points to the top of Baiyoke II: a suggestion of continuous prosperity.

This building fascinates me by its slenderness which makes it looks super tall..and it looks mildly exotic without being gawdy.

People are sitting down having their buffet lunch on the 77th floor. This floor is called "Sky Buffet".
http://www.thailandguidebook.com/baiyoke/004.jpg
These people are on the revolving deck on top of this building (84th floor). It takes about 5 minutes to do a complete rotation. If you don't want to eat, it costs 120 baht to go to the top.

An impressive tower that looks even taller than it is. It seems to have a sound design, that simply "makes sense" and looks good while doing it. One of my favorite highrises that is uniquely Asian in its detailing...

My hotel was in the block next to this tower when I stayed at Bangkok...
You can see it from so many places, and is huge when you're at it's base. The streets around it turn into a large market by the evening, it's really lively there too.
8/10, looks better at night

8:5/10 - Slim, graceful tower with wonderful height, and the gold "arrows" on the facade, along with the gold on the crown, are a great touch. But where did that ugly little antenna come from? And did they put a new roof over the crown so they could get it up there? If they did, that was a mistake! The setbacks are also good, but I wonder if a bit of texture or some sort of detail on the facade might make it even nicer?

I love this building. I was fortunate enough to go to the top
where the observation deck is. The view of Bangkok was
breathtaking. It was even clear that day. The look of this
building is almost haunting due to its slenderness.
I love the color scheme as well.

When I went to Bangkok last month, I stayed in it, on the 50th floor. I had breakfast on the 80somthing floor and went to the top every day.
There's a full glass-faced lift on one of the corners running almost all the way along the height of the building. The trip up and down was breathtaking!
Not a bad building, 9/10

There is just far too much concrete in this building's facade for me to overlook. And concrete is my least favorite building material. So that automatically takes points off. On top of that, the design has always seemed a bit uninspired to me...perhaps if they had gone through with the original proposal and used a bit more glass, I'd be warmer to this building. But it doesn't seem to know what it's doing. It's got the shape of a 1920's downtown NY tower, the spire of a modern Asian supertall, and the color scheme of a slightly exhausted Graves building.
Sort of blah. 5.5/10

I was lucky enough to stay in it (44th floor). Stunning views even from that low level.
The observation deck up top is to be highly recommended. They play this dreamy/trancy Thai music while you stand on a platform that very slowly revolves you around the circumference. Go there at dusk, watch Bangkok light up (especially around Christmas when all the buildings have campy fluoro lights put on) and you'll really fall in love with Bangkok.

4/10...Another tall disappointment. The tower doesn't look bad up close, but from a distance it looks awful. I don't like the midlevel design on the setback, the colors are decent, the crown isn't that dramatic though you sense the tallness of the tower.

Apart from height and uniqueness I don't really like it.
The bottom part looks dirty and the whole tower looks a bit old already.. the DTAC sign doesn't help either.
..as Chad said, the top looks unfinished. If it had came out as the early renderings it would have been great!

I had dinner up there a few weeks ago
My sister flew in and we ahd the buffet dinner. Was very good food serverd on all 4 sides around the core and then seats around that. View was great. You are above every thing which sorta takes away from the density of Bangkok. Still wonderful.
Not sure I care for the huge signs on the side thats the only down fall !

It's nice though, but they could have done it much better. It would be nice as a building but not as the world's top building. Not modern enough and it's kindna messy up there at the top - the flag, the antena and the big ugly ads etc.
Many better looking buildings around in Bangkok. Pity they're just shorter.

Well.. maybe some other Thais would give it a 9/10 or 10/10, but what can I say more?? It's really not that nice as Thailand's highest building. Besides, there are many more things to be proud of here in Thailand.
Don't get me wrong. Personally, I would give it a 10/10 but since it's an international forum here, so let's have an international judgement. :)

Stayed at the Baiyoke when in Bangkok a couple of months ago and got a suite which was one of the point glass bits on the facade, which were just like an enormous glass house on the side of your room. The most unbelievable room I've ever stayed in. 10/10

my reasons for not liking this are
1. even though its not even 1000 ft., nothing around it comes close to it. sticks out like a sore thumb.
2. the top. they had a good scraper going...looks very american from the bottom to the middle, but they fcuked up the top
3. bangkok thailand, itself, is a disgusting place. If I lived over there I would be creeped out 24/7
