Oh, I absolutly love it. I've always liked suspension arches, and the way the two arches are angled makes it look exceptionally fluid. The pedestrian ramps onramps are very thoughtful, as well.

Great bridge! Bratislava needs it:)
And my city, Belgrade needs a new one over the Danube - all of our bridges except one are over Sava river) ...
By the way, if you have Novy Most, Stary Most, what will the one be called?
Novy Novy Most?:D
We have Stari Most in Belgrade too;)

Well, so far as I know, the name is Most Kosicka. But who knows, maybe by opening they will be thinking of the changing of its name...
Actually, in Bratislava there are 4 bridges over the Danube: Most Lafranconi, Novy Most, Stary Most and Pristavny (Harbor) Most. Lafranconi and Pristavny bridges are highway bridges. There are plans about the building the 6th bridge in Bratislava in southeast (near Slovnaft) as a part of second highway circle around Bratislava....But, realistically, after 2008-2009...

Very nice design :), it has a slight Calatrava look to it but it hasn't quite got the quality of one of his designs. I too like the arch design for bridges.
The Danube is going to become a very important route in Europe once again and projectslike this will make it look all the better. Does anyone know if there are any EU plans to clear up the Danube so it can be fully navegable along its entire length?

May 27th, 2004, 12:07 AM
Well, as far as I found out, until 2007, when a special fund for the trans-european networks will be created, these projects will be financed mostly from the Cohesion fund. However, according to EU commission, it is planned to finish fully navigable part Bratislava-Vienna until 2007 and the elimination of the weak points (even in Germany and in Romania and Bulgaria) on other Danube parts until 2015. From the technical aspect, there are at least 7 - 8 years needed to realize the full navigable Danube.

Oh well, at least the EU is getting stuck in to the project. This is the sort of thing it does best. Many thanks for the info Wicky :)

Well, so far got Bratislava five bridges: Old bridge (Stary most) - before reconstruction, New bridge, or bridge SNP (Novy most), bridge Apollo, Pristavny bridge (highway+raliway) and Lafranconi bridge (highway).
Plans to build another bridge are in progress. I´ll just translate the article from Slovak press /daily Sme http://bratislava.sme.sk/clanok.asp?cl=2367993/:
Sixth bridge across the Danube river is incorporated in the area plan for Bratislava. In this plan, which foresees the development up to 2020 is created the space for the highway ring, for which the sixth bridge is a part of. Its location is near Slovnaft oil rafinery.
"This new bridge should serve for the bypass of transit, coming from Austria, Czech republic and Hungary" said Marta Carnogurska, deputy of Director General of company Metro Bratislava, which was the investor of Apollo bridge.
Deputy of Bratislava mayor Karol Kolada said, that the city prepares the legal ground and the renderings so that the construction will be considered after 2010. "Growing transport in the capital requires in 2010 the construction of the new bridge, now we diligently work on this task", he added. The bridge will be a part of the outer highway ring, led from Stupava, contunuing by the tunnel onder Male Karpaty hills, bypassing Raca, Vajnory and Bratislava airport, near the Slovnfat rafinery crossing the Danube and on the southern Bratislava side connecting to the highways to Austria and Hungary.
The costs for the construction of the outer ring should reach ca. 30 mld. of Slovak crowns (ca. 1 mld. of USD, 0,8 mld Euro). The assistance from the state budget is contemplated.
Also real considerings about the bridging of Danube are developing, following the construction of the big investments (Pribinova zone and the left side of Petrzalka quay) by the bridge for the pedestrians, eventually for the bicyckle users, likewise the Millenium bridge in London. This bridge will, however, be financed not from the state budget, but from the private funds.

Let me still post another news:
According to the decision of the jury of European Convention for Steel Constructions, the company Doprastav was awarded by european award for the exceptionality of its steel construction on Kosicka bridge (now bridge Apollo) across the Danube river in Bratislava.
The award was obtained on Wednesday last week in Nice, France. On the diploma are mentioned also the investor of the bridge: company Metro, the city government, main architect Miroslav Matascik from Dopravoprojekt company. Design of the bridge was the task of Dopravoprojekt and the team from Slovak Technical University. The main supplier was the consortium, composed of Doprastav, a.s. Bratislava (Slovakia) and MCE Stahl und Maschinenbau GmbH Co. (Austria).
Company Doprastav registered the steel construction of Kosicka bridge (former name) to the competition, awarded by European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS). Ca. 1 month ago the ECCS announced to Doprastav, that the project was nominated to one of the awards of European Award for Steelstructures.

Similar bridges has been constructed in San Fransisco, Netherlands, China and Japan.
What is special is, that the arch pylon is located in the river, not on the banks on the both sides. Moreover, the role of the architect Miroslav Matascik was to propose the bridge, which should not resemble to anything, which has been constructed in the city. And, the bridge archs are such sloped, that you hardly could find somewhere else.
By assembling the ready made steel construction was floated on the river, so this was another speciality, which made this time the construction of Apollo bridge special.

no "ode of bund"... there are no trolleys on the right bank of Danube river... but they´ll start with construction of new so called "fast tram" from one side of the river to the other...

Bridge Apollo (Bratislava, Slovakia)
Spanning 517.5 meters across the Danube River in Bratislava, Slovakia, and constructed in an area of the city that is rapidly becoming the center of the Slovakian capital, the Bridge Apollo was designed to make a bold aesthetic statement that would complement the city's other bridges while becoming a modern landmark in it own right. The bridge was designed to carry increasing town traffic across the river, as well as serve pedestrians and cyclists. In a rare maneuver, the 5,240-ton steel arch structure, which spans 231 meters and was constructed on the left bank, was rotated and turned—using several barges—across the Danube River into its final position on a pillar 40 meters from the right bank. For more information on this project please visit http://www.asce.org/pressroom/news/display_press.cfm?uid=2330.
