Landmark Tower
Yokohama, Japan

HEIGHT: 296m/971 feet
FLOORS: 70 floors
COMPLETION: 1993
ARCHITECT: Stubbins Associates

Synthesizing Oriental sensibility with contemporary technology, the elegantly tapered Landmark Tower is the focal point of Minato Mirai 21 at the portal harbor front of Yokohama, Japan. Developed as the first phase of a 4,500,000-square foot mega structure, the 73-story, 1000-foot-high skyscraper is the tallest building in Japan.
Combined in form as one distinctive building, the granite-clad tower includes 1,750,103 square feet of office space on 52 floors and a 600-room Nikko Hotel on 15 floors at the top of the tower. Uppermost hotel floors are projected out to accommodate two restaurants and an observation deck with a panoramic view to the Tokyo Bay, Mt. Fuji and Tokyo. Sky lit swimming pool and health facilities are located at the base of the hotel portion where it is recessed over the office floors. Other hotel facilities such as lobby, banquet, and reception rooms occupy the lower four floors in the southwest part of the retail block.

Accommodating the need for a large vertical core, especially in the lower portions, the steel and concrete structure starts with a wide star-shaped base and slopes upward, becoming progressively slender.

At the third retail level, a sky lighted vertical circulation point marks the connection of the moving sidewalk to the main pedestrian mall integrating the complex. Extending northeast, the spine is lined by four levels of shops and restaurants and culminates in a dramatically enclosed atrium space. Three levels of service and parking below ground accommodate a total of 1400 cars.

Very chunky and impressive against its background. But this building would be a nightmare in a skyscraper environment like NY or HK. Its also a bit ugly if u stare hard enough.

Another uniquely designed Japanese skyscraper, the sloping curving sides are unique, and though it is very wide, it doesn't look that way.

I always truly wished the building was narrower at the base and taller - obviously, in other words, I have a problem with dimensions and proportions. I still will always have like for the building - it's perfectly fine in it's location and urban surrounds though. Could've been more, perhaps.

I hate it when you can't tell the color of a building. So what is it? Greyish silver?Sandstone tan??

Looks great against the backdrop of Mt. Fuji, though. 8.

Yeah, Mt Fuji is its saving grace.

Tall but too bulky. Looks odd. Needs more sheen; like glass.

guess i'll be the party pooper here..it starts off great by tapering towards the top but then it has an abrupt end..it does look stubby...it looks unfinished...if they had tapered the 20 stories before reaching the top the design would have made it an incredible building...sorry.....6/10

I can't think of a single building that doesn't look a different colour in different light conditions. How can any building look the same on a bright sunny afternoon as at sunset and as on an overcast day?

8.5/10 - Seems to be very much influenced by Japanese forms, if I'm correct. The shape, with the "towers" rising up along the 4 corners, and the hint of widening again as it nears the top, is very effective. So is the way the corner "towers" go up over the rest of the roof, to form a castle-like profile, which fits in very well with the rest of the building - no need for a spire here! Even the horizontal emphasis along the facade, which I normally might criticise, seem to work well with the rest of the tower.
My major quibble is that it is a bit thick and chunky... As Caledon 1981 says, perhaps a bit less sushi. And the facade might have been even better if it was shinier...
But still an impressive and unique design - and such a background, too!...it's unfortunate for the rating that Mt. Fuji isn't an architectural feature...

big, big, big!!!
very heavy yet when seen from the base it stands like a castle.
not unlike the two towers in LOTR!!!! and i thought it was medieval like when i saw it, with a strong japanese conotation,
don't quite know how to explain that.
Also has the fastest elevators in the world, at least they were still 2 years ago when i got to the top.

I like this building. Overwhelms its surroundings a bit, kinda odd porportions and shape. Like the facade and the colors, and the shape (it can be odd and appealing), a really unique take on the skyscraper. Stands by itself about as well as any skyscraper can, and does not make me stop and think "wow wow wow" (only "wow").

This one is obviously not trying to be pretty ^^
Sheer massiveness, industrial look, and the top gives it something evil ^^
If I'm not mistaken, it's also one of the first supertalls, if not the first, having been built in an intense seismic area. Quite a feat.
Arguably one of Japan's best :-)

Man, that's HUGE! It does look a little thick, but I think "stubby" is off base. It still clearly soars up above the rest of the city. The only things I don't like are the color (makes it look dated) and the top. Not that the top is bad, but it could've been more graceful.

There is nothing graceful about this tower. The great height is completley offset by too big a bulk. Perhaps that was their way to build a near 1000 footer in a super earthquake zone in 93 in which case functionality would earn points. But I think its ugly. But points for height, and some for mass.

A chunky yet solid looking structure and it should be in an earthquake prone area like that. It is not really that boring as it is detailed yet it does look very repititive and I am not a huge fan. 7/10
