Kingdom Centre
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
HEIGHT: 302m/991 feet
FLOORS: 30 floors
COMPLETION: 2002
ARCHITECT: Ellerbe Becket, Omrania and Associates
The Kingdom Centre will have a great impact on the social and commercial environment of Riyadh. It is envisioned as the New International Icon of both Riyadh and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a towering symbol of its progress to the new millennium. The tower will dominate the skyline above Riyadh's premier commercial district and its architectural beauty will remain in the memory of the visitors who once visit the Kingdom Center. It is believed that the shopping complex will provide a whole new lifestyle for the capital residents. The Kingdom Centre will also inspire the other renowned groups of companies in the Kingdom to construct prestigious projects contributing to development and international recognition of the city and the country. This project is also adding to the knowledge of the local consultants and contractors in the construction of high-rise buildings that will pave the way in execution of such projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

A very novel design and building that 60m wide skybridge must have been very difficult. The only dumb thing about it is half of it is 30 floors..and the other half are those huge arms.

Simple and unique design. I like it! 9.5/10. I saw a documentary on the construction of this building and its rival across town, the Al Faisaliah (I can pronounce it correctly now!) Center. The princes who commisioned these two towers could not get around the 30 storey height limit, so with the Al Faisaliah the architects put in a high lobby, observation floors (visible under the K braces) and a round restaurant below stacks of telecommunication platforms and a lantern.
In the documentary the architects of Kingdom Center showed various models of previous designs, none as simple and effective as the built design, and said that the prince rejected all of them. Finally they came up with the present design, built a model of it, and when the prince saw it for the first time he put his arms around it and said, "This is the tower I want."

Why is there a 30 storey limit? But the tower can be structurally taller....:?

Such an intriguing and unique super structure. I saw that superb documentary on it's construction as well. Very interesting what all went into creating this giant. It deserves it's showcased splendid isolation, for it may look bizarre if it were in the middle of a dense tall downtown cluster. 9.

I heard Rafiq Al Hariri (Lebanon's prime minister and a multi-billionare) will build a super skyscraper in Ritadh, maybe larger than the Kingdom Centre. It's kinda like New York in the 20s and 30s, eveyrone wants to build the highest skyscraper.

very unique design for a skyscraper though I must say it looks more like a monument than an actual building & at 30 stories not very functional for an office building but that seems to be the case in Saudi Arabia...for design & engineering it gets a 9/10.

Not bad, 7.5/10
They should build a 50m lobby, 15m celings, extra thick floors so the height for 30 storeys would be 500m:D
And poof! You get the world's tallest building and there's no spire to argue about
Add something like Kingdom Centre's roof and a spire, you get a height of 700m
Now beat that!:D

Stunning, breathtaking design. Truly a great shape, nice colors, astonishing work, original (no longer unique). The side profile is amazing, and the curvature great, although the length of it is a little too big for my taste and its a little inpractical. Plus, I wouldnt want a skyline with only these guys.

So I know this may be opening a can of worms and folks are very vehement about the whole height thing but here is a question:
What is so different about Kingdom Centre, One Emerites Tower, the Domiko Building (I know I spelled it wrong, but Tokyo's tallest), and other such "buildings" that are just ornamental in half their height...that is, why does a spire not count, but if you enclose the space like Kingdom Centre does, it counts towards the overall height?
I can see the opposing point to this, it is technically still a building, but then the question is -- how is this not "cheating" to attain height, whereas folks just barrage poor Freedom Tower calling it a cheat for having all the lattice work...I hate Freedom Tower's design, so I am not sticking up for it...I do kinda feel badly for the building...it is like a handicapped child born prematurely...it was not the kids fault, it is just how the dice rolls in life ;-)
But anyone care to comment on if they think Kingdom Centre etc are "cheats" as well just as badly as say Freedom Tower and Petronas
;-)
Wu-Gambino
July 16th, 2004, 04:58 PM
I just realized that but the biggest cheater by far is Burj Al Arab, that thing isn't even 700 feet tall.
LibertyTwo
July 16th, 2004, 10:13 PM
I know, they all do it really, even Taipei101 has the top floors above the occupational space, SWFC has the ornamental top with the hole, why is that not cheating in the true sense that people use cheating when describing Freedom Tower since it is all the same
Wu-Gambino

I think if we change the official height to the height of the highest occupied floors, things would be better.

ocupa el Puesto 5 como mejor skyscraper of the world.......solo superrados por
1 Petronas Towers
2 Taipei 101
3 shung Hing Square en Shenshen
4 Burj al Arab Hotel en Dubai.....y el 5 puesto para Kingdom centre..jeeee

Wow.
Great in every aspect.
I just rated Metlife building and I realize how some design refining can completeling change the feeling of a shape.
Its loneliness gives it the look of some ancient alien monument, somehow still shiny and untouched by time. Just great.

I'm not sure if this is already done but since the list didn't say it is then I'll make it.
"Kingdom Centre, in Riyadh, is the tallest skycraper in Saudi Arabia. With a height of 302 m (992 ft), it is considered the 25th tallest building in the world. The tower is built on area of 94,230 square meter land, while the whole centre is built on a total area of 300,000 square meter.
The Kingdom Centre is owned by Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a prince of the Saudi royal family, the total cost of the project was 1,717 Million Saudi Arabian Riyals and the contract was taken by Saudi Arabian Bechtel. Kingdom Centre is situated in Al-Urubah Road between King Fahd Road and Olaya Street in the growing business district of Olaya in Riyadh. Kingdom Centre is the winning building of the Skyscrapers.com Award 2002, selected as the "best new skyscraper of the year for design and functionality". Also a three-level shopping center fills the east wing. The mall won a major design award. The large opening is illuminated at night in continuously changing colors.
Besides the shopping mall, the Centre includes a Four Seasons Hotel and state of the art apartments. The ellipse motif taken from the tower's footprint appears also in the light fixtures, ceiling panels, entrance canopy, wastebaskets, and furniture."-wikipedia

Absolutely amazing looking structure. So well finished; even looks ethereal in some of those pictures. Amazing curves, materials, and profile. Commanding for a reason contrary to that of most buildings: it has presence because of an utter lack of mass in its design rather than an excess of it, and for this it is a stunning achievement. Color compilation is flawless. Truly a unique and great design.
Scruffy88
January 12th, 2006, 05:18 AM
10/10 One of my top 3 favorite buildings in the world. 972 floors and 30 floors. That alone has to be a record. But there was a 30 floor limit in that city without there being a height limit so its a clever way to get around it. The design is nearly flawless, the reflective glass is awe inspiring. This is an icon for the middle east and one of the greatest towers ever. period.
