View Full Version : Georges Pompidou Center | Paris, France

Le Centre Georges Pompidou.
It's used as a museum for modern art, built from 1972 to 1976.
Architects: Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano.
Actually, it's one of the most original buildings. Usually all the pipes and ventilation shafts and stuff like that are built inside the building, but not in the Pompidou Center. Here, everything's left outside for people to see. I don't know if it's a good idea, it most certainly is original, but the effect isn't that nice in my opinion. What do you think of it? Please, leave us some comments!

it's one of the most visited museums in europe...but i don't understand that. i really don't like that building! it's so ugly and one of the ugliest buildings of the 70's in paris.

I used to think the world of this building but in recent years in my view the novelty and coolness factor has vanished and it looks dated now.
I know some are huge afficionados but Rogers has overdone himself too many times now.
4 out of 10.

I love Paris, I adore Paris, but I sure hate this building.

Fantastic building, very original! Of course you would't want many of such buildings in your city, but since it's the only one I think it's great! Great contrast to the old buildings in Paris. 9/10

It is very original and with a risky design but I do not like it, very skeletal.I like the exterior gangplank 3,5/10

The building looks messy and conflicting, but this original and relatively cheap design made it an instant icon, attracting an average of 6 million visitors an year! I always put function in front of its looks, so I give it 900/10! :)

When i visited the building i too found it messy and conflicting. However i have to admit that the sheer sight of this unique monument among the crowded old Parisian streets is impressive.
The les halles area nearby is a dump tho! Felt like a parisian version of Kings Cross - just even cheaper! In my opinion that area could do with a good knocking down and replacing with something more suitable that would feel less like a cheap run-down mall.
Anyway back to the Pompidou Centre, i think its one of those buildings you either love or loathe. And maybe this kind of uncompromising architecture is more successful that an bodged attempt to appease all (eg Paternoster sq in london). so i say 10/10!

Definately unique, but the Lloyds of London building is just amazing - those glass elevators rushing up on the outside are just plain cool :D

The building was built to make a statement. I admire that. However, it's still ugly. 5

why ugly ? People who dislike it have it already seen ?
It give lot of contrasts in Paris, many colors and a city to many often white & grey. It is a centre for Paris. The place is full of animation. It is a success !
Original building ! Really a monument for Paris !!! I love it !!! :)

Hehe I think it is really cool. It's a real pity, that it was under some kind of renovation or smth and was wrapped in someting when I was visiting Paris in 1998

@ Jarmo: I wast there during the Football Championship - something like the 22nd-24th of June...
The cool thing was when France won some pretty important game - quarter-final or smth. and thousands of fans drove into the streets. We were in Champs Élysées at that moment, so it was really cool to see thousands of cars doing a "circle of triumh" around the Arch of Triumph :D

I dont like it, this along with Llyods of London..just not to my taste, i feel it mocks the flawless architecture around it and of Paris.. but it does its job and as you say .. its a modern art museum..so i suppose it would be wrong for it to be in with the norm..
(and ive been in it too.. not for long mind, it was a hot day.. i wanted sunshine hehe)

It's a fantastic building. What's tragic is what was destroyed to make way for it. The building is a 9,5, but its integration to its site is close to 0. Since we're mostly rating the building, I give it a 8.

When the French President gave his approval to the construction of Beaubourg he said something like "People will make a fuss about it" and he was right. But this building was crucial for Paris to brake its image of "museum-city" and for that I give a 10.

If the museum has been styled to blend in with it's surroundings, I'd doubt that it would recieve as much attention. Plus, with all the utilities on the outside, it frees up interior space.
