Citigroup Center
New York, USA
HEIGHT: 279m/915 feet
FLOORS: 59 floors
COMPLETION: 1977
ARCHITECT: Stubbins Associates
From the very beginning, the Citicorp Center (today, the Citigroup Center) in New York City was an engineering challenge. When planning for the skyscraper began in the early 1970s, the northwest corner of the proposed building site was occupied by St. Peter's Lutheran Church. The church allowed Citicorp to build the skyscraper under one condition: a new church would have to be built on the same corner, with no connection to the Citicorp building and no columns passing through it.
How did the engineers do it? They set the 59-story tower on four massive columns, positioned at the center of each side, rather than at the corners. This design allowed the northwest corner of the building to cantilever 72 feet over the new church.
In 1978, the skyscraper's chief structural engineer, William LeMessurier, discovered a potentially fatal flaw in the building's design: the skyscraper's bolted joints were too weak to withstand 70-mile-per-hour wind gusts. With hurricane season fast approaching, LeMessurier took no chances. He convinced Citicorp officers to hire a crew of welders to repair the fragile building. For the next three months, a construction crew welded two-inch-thick steel plates over each of the skyscraper's 200 bolted joints, permanently correcting the problem.

The base and the way it solved problems that it encountered like almost no other designed skyscraper could get through, surprises me.
It is a bit wide, but the shape that the mass damping system gives to this building is good.

I have always had mixed feelings about this one. It is certainly striking, but it is poorly proportioned and inelegant. The base perverts the relationship a building should have with the street. Propping a relatively fat building up on props (like the strange Ranier Bldg in Seattle) makes the whole thing look top-heavy and disturbing.
They should have followed through with the original idea to put solar panels on the top. 5

hmmmm..... the interior...... I don't exactly remember so I'm just gonna say it's very modern and high quality haha. There are restaurants, stores, and a barns & nobles bookstore on the first and basement floor. I've seen homeless people come in and chill in the basement too.

5/10 - the aluminum and glass dance with the light well, but the tower is blocky and monotonous, the shape of the top is not very elegant, and the base - well, i agree with Subdude - it looks like it's walking on stilts, and the effect is unnatural, topheavy, and disturbing - just like, as Subdude observes, the Rainier Tower in Seattle - I have seen a picture of this tower, and Paul Goldberger in his book "On the Rise", refers to its disturbing small base carrying a much larger tower as narcisistic self-indulgence on the architect's part, if I recall correctly. He's correct about the Rainier Tower, and I tend to think he might be correct here as well. Besides, it looks just a wee tiny bit tacky...

The base is spectacular, especially with the church next to it (built as part of the complex). I cannot say enough about how impressive and monolithic the base is, it gets a 10/10 HOWEVER...
The tower is bland, I despise strong horizontal bands of windows on boxes and here they are at their worst, too thin and they make the tower seem much shorter and more squat than it really is. Sloped roof? Great, but since the whole point of the sloped roof (solar panels) was never brought to fruition, there is no "form following function" and it screams failure. Beyond that one cannot forget the fact that the structural design was flawed and had to be quietly damped to avoid a catastrophe after the tower was finished.

Well, enzo just stated what I would've said - about the flawed structural design and the whole sloped roof that never became used for what it was planned for. 7.5.

strikes me as a very "New York" building. Pretty simple, in a good way, on top, exotic and interesting at streetlevel. Looks good in the skyline, but nothing fantastic. The tradeoff of the base is that it does not mesh well at streetlevel, but in a place like midtown, it doesnt matter to me as much.

A graceful, soaring, elegant skyscraper that's tall enough to poke above the main bulk of the skyline. I love the smooth, white, stripey facade - reminds me of the HSBC tower in London's Docklands. The slanting crown is just superb. Definitely one of my faves.

a very "stubbins" design (much like the fed. reserve in boston), I agree with waht enzo said with the slope roof, if they wouldve followed through with the solar panels it wouldve been a much higher tower. the base is a very nice base (bad wording, sorry). the facade is bland, while it looks good up close, it looks so repetitive from afar.

Dangerous, but it works. What makes this dangerous is the footing, but it supports the weight anyways, with the wrong designs can be casualties. But, my mixed feelings tells me that I should appreciate the design quality of this building for good standards, partially because it looks a lot like the Canada One in Toronto, and the roof is out of this world. The design below is good, really good. The look of the building is just average. The first picture of the building being drawn made it look amazing, but in real life, its just an average looking building with feet at the bottom. Looks like the designer has tried too hard to design a skyscraper. 5.5/10

Can anyone say NYC icon? Even a skyscraper novice can be shown a pic of this tower and can identify that its NYC. But infamy does not a good score get. 915ft straight up. No spires or antennas to steal a little bit more height. It does it the old fashioned way. Its brawny and unbelievably thick and dense yet playful when you see this behemoth standing on stilts. The facade and strips of windows could be better but this image has been so engraved in my mind and endeared itself to me that I cannot possibly imagine it any other way. Perhaps a modest amout of bias but

Very interesting base makes a it look very open at street level. The slanted roof is great as well. I love the way it fits in with the Manhattan skyline... perfectly placed as well. I see it as an important roleplayer in the skyline.

I agree. Met life (ugly) Chrysler (lovely) and this building (sublime) are really the only talls that stand out in the midtown jungle. To be noticed there a building must be tall, which at 279 metres this is by NY standards, and attractive visually which this is by any standard. This is the best post war tall in manhattan and possible the best of all. It's a 9.5 or a 10

Manhattan's density is wonderful but this stands out as a superb building, truly beautiful, in a sea of old tired looking frankly scruffy buildings.
I am always struck by how this building screams "look at me" in any pic of Midtown and it is well worth looking at.

December 7th, 2007, 12:59 AM
I give Citicorp Center a 10, simply because I'm old enough to recall how " radical " This building was upon completion. It was not only hailed as a clever departure from, tired, late 70's Modernist box wave of architecture. But, It's successful relation to the street level activity... via the plaza base... earned It acclaim. It, also, foreshadowed the following 80's post-modernism wave of architecture. Citicorp Center, like Many before It, had It's day!
What's IN " today ", will be OUT " tomorrow " ! That's Reality. Architectural Design is like ALL fashion. Citicorp Center was something for It's time no different than the skyscrapers of the the 20s, 30s, etc. were for Their eras. Many of Which were derided for being to " flamboyant " with ornamental details. Even today's, futuristic skyscrapers and structures, will within a decade be considered " dated " once the next design trend emerges.
tigerboy
December 7th, 2007, 03:15 PM
Of course fashion changes and the building will age. Chartres Cathedral would not be built today. The Haussmannian boulevards are dated etc etc.
However this building, while it will age and become dated, will always be beautiful because it is a beautiful design whereas 98% of its confreres will simply be dated and ugly in future as they are current and ugly now. This is one of the top 10 real talls in North America and will always epitomise the best of its era as will 33 Wacker for instance. Fashion is transient. Beauty is eternal. Look at La Sainte Chapelle or Kings College Chapel Cambridge - dated but inspiringly beautiful.
