120 Collins Street
Melbourne, Australia
HEIGHT: 264m/866 feet
FLOORS: 52 floors
COMPLETION: 1991
ARCHITECT: Hassel Architects
Like the nearby 101 Collins, 120 Collins pays respect to almost every element of the 20s New York skyscraper vernacular, with set-backs and a central mast, combined in a stunningly modern building. The addition of aesthetically placed twin satellite dishes further alludes to the futuristic neo-gothic. 120 Collins also features exposed air conditioning vents and other structural details, a mixture of square and corbusian window motifs and the use of support floors as expressions to break the height into 3 distinct sections, creating an effect reminiscent of the neo-gothic Woolworth tower in sillhoute. The effect is further enhanced when the building is floodlit at night. The metallic surface of the tower alludes to the Art-Deco Chrysler in New York.
The podium base and its granite mass makes full attempts to be sympathetic to the sensitive urban environment of Collins Street, despite the sheer mass of the building.

Lovely. It complements 101 Collins well.

RafflesCity: that's what I gathered re: why it's not in the top 100 (spire height and roof height) I don't think any Melburnian looks at the Melbourne big-bastards with spires, and their height to the pinacle, this is just another ~220m building to me, like Bourke Place too

8.5 Because its tall, the design isnt that bad, but most of all i think everyone in Melbourne will agree it makes up for it because it looks absolutley cool at night. Easily best building to look at at night IMO

The setbacks, form and 'playfulness' of this one, i love. When in Melbourne and i'm in the vicinity, i can't help but look at it in awe. i just go "goo goo ga ga". Looks vunabar when fully lit in the evening. Can look dull though when the weather is overcast (during the day).

Unboring, therefore 8.5... i think the satellites not serving a purpose is a little tacky, but that's what helps make this building unique i guess.

No, it doesn't count, the 260m figure is to the top of the mast, which shouldn't count, to roof it is 200m.
I give a 7/10. Better than it's nearby 101 Collins, since it is slightly thinner, and slightly taller. But without the antenna, it would not be as well recognised.

Horizontal streaks on its facade is meant to be sympathetic to Joseph Reed's magnificent church at its base. Odd angles in foyer layout is typical of Daryl Jackson's work, and very, very Melbourne. Streak lighting at night a welcome addition in recent years. Accentuated edges give it a sense of soaring height.

7.5/10 - The facade has good height, helped by the butress-like setbacks, and the lighting at night is great.
The facade CAN dance with the light, but it doesn't always, and perhaps could use some more vertical emphasis. The tower could use a larger setback or two near the base, and that antenna only looks good when it's let up at night.
Say, Tayser, did you use a red filter on your camera lens when you took that awsome sunset chot?

It's actually 264m high and the satellite dishes are functional, I'm not sure if any of the current tenants actually use them for anything but the do work. They added them during construction because it would have been much more expensive to hoist them up at a later date!
120 & 101 Coillins compliment each other perfectly, both of them having the unique spires with the platforms that I haven't seen on any other skyscrapers but these two.

Man, I love this tower. The form and facade are both make a great combination, especially for Melbourne, but the real joy of the building is the spire/antenna on top. I don't know of any other building which has an array similar to that, but it really just caps off the building all too well.
Talk about near post-modernism perfection.

Can't believe I haven't voted on one of Melbourne's finest yet!!
It's Melbourne's mini-ESB for me .. a modern interepretation of classic early century East Coast Art Deco ... here's my best pic ..
http://users.bigpond.net.au/speckled10/DSC00041.jpg
9/10
0.5 off each for two reasons: The exterior could and should have more detail to truly make it a modern masterpiece .. and also it can appear a little skinny from some angles
Other than that, from so many more angles it just makes a huge presence on the Melbourne skyline ..
Together with 101 Collins they stamp class all over Melbourne's 'Paris End' of the CBD ..
As a side note.. the fact that we don't count the spires on 101 & 120 as official despite being far more substantial and functional than many 'official' spires - not to mention climbable as grollo pointed out just shows what a crock of steaming fat #2's is the CTBUH rule on spires

Not bad! A bit boxier than I usually like, but it does it with style. And it was obviously designed with major attention to surrounding buildings, which is a huge plus as it compliments the skyline beautifully. The top is somewhat ugly, but the overall effect makes that a relatively minor concern. Very well done. 9/10

Nice, if a little plain. I think practicality is the most important feature of a building, but I feel that, at least on the facade, the designers went out of their way to make this plain and industrial, especially near the very top. Dont like the cheesy satellite dishes either. This building has a lot going for it. Nice setbacks, grandiose shape, good location.

the top is very ugly!!! with those satelites and stuff
It has to be taken in context:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Towers/coll0022.jpg
This tower reflects both the old & the new in this city, & is always in harmony:

120 Collins St. is a cheap Empire State. I watched those final bits go up, one by one, as they were raised, being, at that time too busy to have read where it was going.
A cheap Empire State, and maybe all the bits on top should have been masonry instead, but dare I say it, it's a lot better than anything that went up in this city in the previous thirty or forty years- the Rialto excepted. And the "AMP" Building. A lot was happening then, and if 333 Collins St. for a start was finshed sooner rather than later, then I exclude it from my judgement too.
Melbourne couldn't afford a real Empire State.

Taller, Better

This building has nothing to do with 20's architecture and is frankly unattractive.
I especially dislike the clunky antennae on top, which is not a spire. It is a box
with an antennae.

No, it doesn't count, the 260m figure is to the top of the mast, which shouldn't count, to roof it is 200m.
I give a 7/10. Better than it's nearby 101 Collins, since it is slightly thinner, and slightly taller. But without the antenna, it would not be as well recognised.
yes but Q1 is listed higher than the Eureka tower because of its mast....

June 9th, 2006, 12:55 PM
the antenna mast/tower is intricate to its design. you cant take it off or it would look unfinished. the main roof is 200m and central plantroom is 220m. The mast rises to 262m and had an height increase a few years back with a 2m fibreglass cover, now 264m. This is the type of structure that MIGHT surmount Eureka tower. both have walk platforms and are rather large in size not just a spire. ive always liked this tower. no its not the chrysler of esb but it copys romantic style of NYC and fits in well with melb skyline.

Without the communication tower parts at the top or the fact the bldg has different breaks where the bldg has more than one plain colour. I would give the bldg only a 5/10.
The top levels do stand out though and are impressive modern not to ugly for a communication tower in the distance. I'd give a 7/10 unlike the Telstra one in Brissy in Kangaroo Point which only deserves a 3.5/10

It's a good building and it doesn't do anything offensive, but it has just never stood out to me. In fact, I tend to forget it even exists. Not sure why, maybe it's because it's a bit drab in colour or that it depends on the huge antenna to stand out from the crowd. It's attractive enough and there are worse skyscrapers in Melbourne, and the lighting scheme at night is gorgeous.

I think the frame tower on top looks a bit cheap? The building is stone and glass and has nice detailing and design....kind of modern art deco..but the spire section looks a bit 'space satellite'. I agree it looks nice at night, although wish it wasn't opposite 101 Collins St. Both having metal towers on top. In Melbourne I'd rate Eureka, Rialto and an old favorite 140 William st. ahead of it.

Eureka! Did your parents ever teach you manners when you were young?
The other 2 posters and I were merely rating buildings based on our own criteria and yet you're here making groundless insults. That makes YOU the troll.
I suggest you start improving your taste in manners and buildings earnestly. Late is better than never.
I wonder why Australian posters seem to be the only ones that are so concerned about others' identities and so inclined to post vulgarity (not you) and insults. A national trait? Lousy family upbringing?

You've got to be the most pathetic imbecile and lowlife I've ever seen. If there's someone more pathetic than you, it'll have to be the dumbass who picked you to be a "moderator".
This is the first time I've seen a so-called "moderator" or site admin that so flagrantly flaunt his stupidity and shamelessness in abusing his given privileges in public by deleting ratings in a poll simply because certain posters didn't vote the way he wanted. Why not just make every poll a 3 option poll - 10, 10, and 10. Hahahahaha.
Given your sub-human intelligence, you'll probably never realize how pathetic you were in committing such a thuggish clown act. According to your public profile, you are almost 28 years old. 28!!! And this is the kind of maturity you've managed to achieve?! Hahahahaha! Pathetic! Your IQ is probably lower than that of the average 8 year old.
Your occupation as a "science fiction writer" is itself a piece of fiction. Forget about science, monkey boy. There isn't a single logic gate inside your decaying thick skull. You're a drop-out grade born loser. But you've already written your best fiction - your Interests! (quote from your profile: Photography, swimming, art, architecture, creative writing, web design, music, cinema, pubs, clubs, dining out, exploring London!!! Hahahahahahaha!! Now that's creative writing.
I wonder how you inherited such an inferior brain. I guess you were probably born in Australia to a pair of inbred parents who were themselves descendants of exiled criminals from England two hundred years ago. Of course that's not the only way to be born stupid. Hail Australia - the dumping ground of England's criminals.
You overestimated this stinking site, retard. It doesn't take a genius to see that few visitors come to the site and most of those who post here (i.e. Australians) SOUND awfully like members of your inbreeding family - ignorant, stupid and foul-mouthed. But then how many normal people would want to participate in a site managed by a group of unethical, unprincipled and brain dead jackasses, except to have some fun teasing moronic lowlifes such as yourself and members of your inbreeding family ? Or should I call them Australian forumers? Hahahahahahaha!!!
Oh by the way, why stop deleting ratings after just two polls? Do every poll, retard!! I double dare you!! Well, make that an order!! Let's see if you can delete them all before I get back from my vacation trip. I'll try to convince more kids in my neighborhood to keep you entertained in the mean time. Be nice to them. They are more intelligent and have better taste than you and most forumers here (Aussie, Chinese or otherwise). Ask them how to write computer programs that post ratings automatically, dumbass!

Its ironic that you speak of maturity when it is so clear that you are behind the mindless plot (involving numerous made up accounts) to bring this thread into disrepute. Any mature person wouldn't spend such time writing long posts attempting to insult (in a very cliche manner, notably) someone whom they had never met before! Clearly your occupation is in itself not so great (or at least doesn't give you satisfaction) when you have to hack away at someone to get your kicks!

Love the grand gesture of design tributing to the art deco era of manhattan but just doesn't leap off the page and smack me in the face in awe. Unlike the rialto towers or the republic tower, those are the ingenius designs that make me walk into trees and street signs lined along the pavement in sheer delight from staring way too long. :)

Architecture, typical years 80. But it is nothing bad.
