View Full Version : RULES & BUILDING LIST - read before making thread!

All "rate the tall" threads must be created as a poll, so that votes can be more easily tracked. Any thread that is not created as a poll will be locked and deleted once a proper thread has been created.

ALL threads must be created with the same poll format, which is 15 poll options, with the voting options going from "10.0" to "3.0 or less" in .5 increments.

New Title form:

""Tower Name l CITY l Height l Floors""

The buildings in this list are for any skyscrapers not found in the Top100-300 sections.
The list is organised by region and city, so check it to avoid creating duplicate threads. You can also look for buildings by using the search key and typing the building or city name.

Forumers are discouraged from posting threads asking everyone to rate every highrise in thier city, as there is a method to the madness here. Threads featuring interesting, but perhaps not tall enough buildings (to be among the World's 300 tallest) will be considered on a case by case basis. A City's tallest highrise or notable highrise, would most likely be allowed, while the local Best Western will not. An innovative design like Foster's Swiss Re would be OK, but a slab like NYC'S AT&T Longlines Building would not...

If folks have any questions, fire away!

POLLS ONLY

D-Mac
September 13th, 2002, 05:24 PM
Hi Jasonhouse, I think this is great. I didn't even think it would be possible to transfer the threads from the old forum. If it is, awesome!

There's just one thing. You say that all the "Rate Our Talls" threads should be made as a poll because votes could be tracked more easily. There's a problem with this though. I can only give so many voting choices, so it would be the integers from 0-10. This means if someone wants to give 8.5/10 or 7.25/10, for example, they can't do it. The results would be more accurate without the polls, I think.

I guess I could ask people to reply with their rating, and vote as well; I would only consider the posted ratings and the poll results could be for everyone to look at. Is that what you were thinking? People might be tempted to just vote and not reply though. Anyway, that was the only thing I was concerned about. :okay:

Jasonhouse
September 13th, 2002, 10:21 PM
I can customize the polls feature to allow as many options as you need. It is currently set to 15, but could easily be increased to 20. At 20, there should be plenty of resolution for voting.

20 options would allow for

10+
10
9.5
9.0
8.5
8.0
7.5
7.0
6.5
6.0
5.5
5.0
4.5
4.0
3.5
3.0
2.5
2.0
1.0
0.0

If someone can't convey thier opinion of the building with this many options, then that would be thier problem, not yours or mine. :)

So that would be OK, yes?

And remember, if I made like you and Jack mods of this section, then you would be able to manipulate threads within this forum, and also change/adjust polls as needed. I think that using the polls feature is truly a no brainer.

D-Mac
September 13th, 2002, 10:33 PM
Okay, that sounds good. Can you make it 21 options though? That way I could make the poll include everything from 0 to 10 at intervals of 0.5. When people rate a building 11/10 or anything like that I just make it a 10, so there's no need for a 10+ option.

Alright, so once that's taken care of, I'm all ready to make # 38 :) Thanks a lot, JH!

Jasonhouse

21 it is...

BTW, I have learned that we will not beable to move thread from the old forum to the new one (so far as we know right now), because it is a different software platform, and they aren't compatible.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could manually transfer the threads to here from WSF. Perhaps we can start anew, at #1, and work our way down? The best way to do this is to click on "edit" of the first post of the thread, "copy" all of the text and code, and then "paste" it into a new thread here. The UBB IMG tags will still work here, so there won't be a problem doing it this way. We will lose old votes/replies, but I have a feeling that we will get MANY new votes/replies here in no time flat.

D-Mac
September 14th, 2002, 12:25 AM
Restart all the threads?? That's a tall order! I mean the original idea was to stop at #55, and #37 is already two thirds of the way there. If I keep making them at the pace of three per week like I have been doing so far, it will take another 12 weeks just to get back to this point! I have the old ratings saved on my HD, so they are not lost. Oh by the way I just looked on WSF and the Rate our talls section is gone along with all the threads.

Another point: don't you think the World Skyscraper forumers who participated in the threads might not feel like posting their ratings for all the buildings they rated nearly three months ago? The good sports who have been rating them since #1 might get tired of it and give up on the threads entirely.

Anyway, it seems like a waste to have to re-do nearly three months worth of threads just because of this forum switch. Oh I should point out that in the lastest thread that I created here (#37), the number of ratings received was no different from the average of the first 36 at WSF.

Jasonhouse
September 14th, 2002, 12:29 AM
How many view these will change in time. Trust me, there is going to to be WAY more traffic here than at WSF (already about triple), this will invariably lead to more votes, especially since it will be in the form of an easy to use poll. People gobble those up.

I wouldn't expect anyone to redo all of the ROT threads in justa day or two, but figure it woudl be best to start over, and post perhaps 3-5 a week, just like before. I plan on moving a couple of them over myself, later this evening, and I am going to start at #1.

D-Mac
September 14th, 2002, 12:40 AM
Wait, so do you want me to do the old ones all at once, or at the regular pace? How are you going to move them over if they're gone? They have been deleted, or they aren't visible anymore, at least.

Jasonhouse
September 14th, 2002, 01:52 AM
YIKES. I just noticed that myself... Uhh, I am wondering where they went, or better yet, WHY they went. Man, that will suck if those threads are gone, because it is pretty easy to copy/paste a thread if you know how to do it. I could have done all of them within an hour, tops...

SteelCity32

Jason, they are gone. The Rate Our Talls forum was erased..:(

RafflesCity
September 14th, 2002, 03:11 AM
Start right from #1?

I know I have the appetite for it :D
But as DMac said, some people might cop out..but we do have a chance of letting new voters vote so I dont know...it may mean waiting a long time before we can to review the results

On the other hand with a voting system, we dont have to restrict to 3 a week. I'm all for the idea although I'd have to make mental readjustments to voting in intervals of 0.5 (maybe I am a wee bit critical to wanna vote like 7.9)

How about this..DMac saves the previous scores and reports those BUT for the benefit of the newbirds we start from #1 and if DMac has the appetite he can report results as (1)Old forum (2)New forum :?

RafflesCity
September 14th, 2002, 03:19 AM
Elaborating on what I meant previously..

since the earlier buildings would have 2 sets of results, old and new, we could increase their accuracy by averaging them. This would sort of equalise the scales with the new buildings.

D-Mac
September 14th, 2002, 03:36 AM
Yeah I was a little peeved that all the trouble I took to save all the ratings for every building for this whole time would be for nothing if we started over.

I don't know if averaging the results would be good because you would for sure have people who rated the building twice... so it wouldn't be accurate.

RafflesCity
September 14th, 2002, 03:48 AM
The degree of inaccuracy would be minimized.

People's opinions might change with time..so this sort of reflects their true scores. IMO it would be more inaccurate to compare the old scores of buildings in old forum WITH voted scores of new buildings on this one. (The main reason being that now people only vote in 0.5 intervals)

And if you were worried about folks not wanting to vote twice..this method does not make anyone's efforts go to waste as we still rely on the old scores.

But..the ball's in your court and you've done a GREAT job wirh rate our talls!

D-Mac
September 14th, 2002, 04:05 AM
Thanks Raffles! :)

The ball is actually in Jasonhouse's court. I would just keep doing the threads the way I was doing them before, but he's got some bigger ideas for the threads. Kind of a huge database with all our ratings it seems.

That's OK, it won't matter for quite some time. I mayt even open another sub-forum, which would be an "open" forum for folks to post a ROT style thread on any building they wanted folks to vote on. I think it could be a real draw in time.

CG5
September 14th, 2002, 10:30 PM
In time, yes. But if Jan wants what I think he wants (a sort of interactive buildings database, if you will) then you need to have some order to things. When the ROT's were first started at the WSF all of the OZscrapers guys told me I was clinically insane. And you must admit (due to recent events over at WSF) that things can get out of hand. If you're looking at an interactive database, great. But for the love of God, don't let everyone run wild with it.

Good idea. -And may I suggest every forumer who can afford it, and has a little self respect to buy 100 of the world's tallest buildings -This book fits so well into the subjetc. It's a "must buy book" for every "rate our tallest" fan.

Vesle, if I'm not wrong that book is out of print. Amazon claims a new version is coming out in Aug 2002 but no news so far.

Jasonhouse

Buildings not in the Top 100 will have thier own ROT forum that will be open to new threads. the Top 100 ROT forum will be a closed forum that can only receive replies and votes, but not new threads (unless a mod does it)...This probably won't occur for some time though, for varying reasons...

BTW, I was going to create an announcement with a list of the TOP 100 buildings, but I am having trouble locating multiple lists (I want more than one source). I will likely use the list that Skyscrapers.com has compiled, so long as they don't object (I doubt they will, so long as a cite them and provide a weblink for them)...

I also want to use the official Council on Tall Buildings list... Does anyone have record of it? I don't want to have to pay for a membership just to get a little info.

RafflesCity
September 26th, 2002, 08:38 PM
I would have thought that skyscrapers.com got their list from official Council on Tall Buildings.

Previously DMac based his ranking on the skyscraperpage.com diagrams based on roof heights. Are u not using that?

Jasonhouse
September 27th, 2002, 09:14 AM
I don't know. I was going to post 2 or 3 sources, and then sorta try to get a consensus from everyone on what they felt was the fairest, most logical way to measure hieght. But I guess that we don't need a building list to decide that...

My vote goes to using roof hieghts, but that isn't necessarily the standard.

Vesle
September 27th, 2002, 09:43 AM
I'd go for the roof hight too...

@Raffles, I hope a new book by Urban Habitat on Tall Buildings is on its way, but the old one was also good... a bit dated, I know...

A 100 tallest list in here would be nice to see, but a 200 or perhaps 300 tallest list would be much better.

Actually a list about all buildings from the 100th-200th tallest would be better than a list from the tallest to the 100th tallest, because we already know about most of the 100 tallest, if not them all.

RafflesCity
September 27th, 2002, 01:58 PM
We should and can do 101-200, however we should like label them Showcase1, Showcase 2 etc.

I'm fine with any list we use, and you'll be surprised how much people love to see their favourite skyscrapers again :D
The most exciting thing of this top100 is that we want to see which are the MOST POPULAR buildings based on OUR choice. (of averaged scores). This is something that cannot be found in any book.

The spires vs roof debate will NOT end if thrown open to the public. :bleep:

I say put the foot down and start the ball rolling! :guns1:

D-Mac
September 27th, 2002, 04:35 PM
Well at the old forum the threads were done in order based on roof height, but that was CityGod's idea when he started the threads. I would like to do it based on structural height (i.e. the skyscrapers.com top 100), since that is the standard that tall buildings are ranked using, as decided by the CTBUH. I couldn't do it before since the series was already under way when I took over.

I'm also a bit reluctant to use the skyscraperpage.com list because during the series at WSF, the order of buildings actually changed at one point! Some people may have noticed that First Canadian Place appeared out of order, that was because for some reason that building moved up the ranking from a number coming up in a week to a number that was already done a week prior!

Vesle, I would also like to see the list go past 100. I figure I'll start with 100, then at a slower pace (since it is very time consuming to prepare all these threads) go on to 200 and maybe even more. It's all part of the great plan. :)

I would like to get started on this as soon as possible, as I told Jasonhouse before, but apparantly there will be some delays. It's kind of too bad, since if I had just continued with the threads the way it was going before, we would be getting close to finishing by now. Anyway, I completely agree, Raffles, let's get going! :okay:

Jasonhouse
September 27th, 2002, 06:25 PM
OK... We will use STRUCTURAL hieght... And that's the end of that...

As far as the whole modding/forum thing, I still don't know what is going on with that. Jan doesn't want to create any new space or forums until he gets the server issue settling once and for all, and that should be quite soon. He gave up on hosts, and is moving to a costly dedicated server within days.

DMAC, you can create those threads all you want and place them in the current ROT forum. It will be no trouble at all to move them to the dedicated Top 100 forum that I will create at a later time.

I'm going to re-rank the few that are already up, since we are gong to use the "structural top" standard.

D-Mac
September 27th, 2002, 11:58 PM
If it's only a few days, I can wait. It will be easier to do everything at once on the separate forum where I can put in the votes from WSF at the same time.

A dedicated server eh? $$$$ :dizzy:

Why are there now 2 'rate our talls' forums?

Jasonhouse
September 30th, 2002, 11:24 PM
Because one will contain the World's Tallest 100, and the other will be an open forum, for folks to create thier own "Rate Our Tall" threads of thier favorite buildings that aren't part of the World's Top 100. We will open the Top 100 forum when it has been filled with at least the top 25 buildings or so...

RafflesCity
October 1st, 2002, 06:44 PM
a) Will the Top100 be closed after each building receives a given number of votes?

b) Will voters be limited to 3 per week as previously?

(I am impatient :D )

Jasonhouse
October 1st, 2002, 08:56 PM
All 100 will be posted as soon as we can get them up. Since we have been delayed a bit, I will likely open the forum as soon as we have about 25 or so ready to go... People will be able to vote and comment on each and every building (only once, of course)...The forum will be closed so that no other threads can be created within it, though I will create a sticky thread for folks to leave comments about the concept itself....

The further we go down the list, the harder it is to compile good images of the buildings. Especially ones that we are allowed to use.

I had origionally hoped to do the World's Top 500, but that seems like more of a long-term wish than anything.

If you want to see the Top 200 extended, start helping out by creating threads for the missing buildings in the 101-200 list. Once it is completed, we will stock the 201-300 list with several threads, and then open a new place for it.

Also , I have been considering adding another mod or two to help stock these lists, but these people need to be DEDICATED. I'm not quite sure that there is another bloke out there as awesome as Raffles, but I'm all ears.

heh..thanks Jason..actually BGT and Napptown have helped out slightly:)

For me the greatest challenge to do a top 300 would be to maintain an accurate and up-to-date list. One has to constantly watch out for buildings that just get completed and with each new addition, the rankings change. It isnt an easy task and needs DEDICATION. (think 3 times before you volunteer youself)

I have worked out a rudimentary list of the top300 just in case though. And quite fortunately, there are a number of buildings in the Open forum that are part of that list. However, if we want to go further, we will need a new strategy: by getting members to help in creating threads;we can always call upon members from different cities to help provide pictures. Thats the advantage of a global forum like this.

But I think we need to consider the pros and cons of a top300 list
